Next was the motherboard Gigabyte MA790XT-UD4P. We received this fee from the BIOS F2 of January 16, 2009. However, it did not help to unlock our "good" copy of the Phenom II X3. On March 10, Gigabyte released the BIOS F2B version, which was supposed to update the ACC code for Phenom X3 processors. We updated the BIOS to the latest version of F3, but it did not help.

We contacted Gigabyte to find out what is meant by the "ACC code update". According to the company, all manufacturers developing new BIOS with the latest AMD microcode must disable the nucleus / cache unlock function, which at least explains why ASUS and Gigabyte motherboards with the latest BIOS versions refused to cooperate with us. Why not use the old microcode? Latest version The microcode corrects many other problems, including, for example, a problem with a random reboot. Representatives of ASRock told us that the company is not in a hurry to include the latest microcode corrections. If AMD releases new processors or corrects the errors that it considers it critical to updating the microcode, then the consumer will feature two versions of BIOS, and enthusiasts will be able to choose one or another version.

And not all processors too

As a result, we tested three Phenom II X4 810 processors and three Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition. One processor was obtained from AMD as samples. According to one processor, we received from ASRock - these were models with guaranteed unlocking, which we used to check whether we can unlock processors on other motherboards. Finally, we bought the last couple on NeweGg to get an idea of \u200b\u200bthe possibility of unlocking retail versions of processors.

Of course, two processors from ASRock we have successfully unlocked. Phenom II X4 810 from AMD also earned. But Phenom II X3 720 bes from AMD could not unlock. Phenom II X4 810, purchased on Newegg, we have successfully unlocked. And Phenom II X3 720 could not.

In the processors that we could unlock normally, the ACC function was set to "Auto" in the BIOS of the ASRock motherboard. Sample X3 720, sent by us by ASRock, perfectly passed all our tests at this setting, showing the advantage in performance from the inclusion of the fourth kernel. Then, to check stability, we launched the PRIME95 test. In just a few minutes, the platform depended, and after the reset began to report only about three cores - even with the ACC function turned on.

We have already read about such behavior when the processor unlocking "does not come true". Fortunately, it allowed us to find a way to return unlocking, even if it does not work, back.

We began to translate ACC setting in the other modes, in addition to "Auto", using the option of nuclear "All Cores". By changing it with a step by 2%, we were able to return the fourth kernel back when setting up -6%. And if earlier the system could not withstand the PRIME95 test in general, in this case it worked fine for an hour without errors before we turned off the computer. It seems that the more aggressive ACC setup allows you to stabilize the unlocking of the fourth kernel.

However, ACC does not create miracles. On our two Phenom II x3 720, on which the kernel was not unlocked and in the "AUTO" position, we changed the ACC setting with + 12% to -12%, and did not find any signs of the fourth kernel.
