A computer that is placed in the pocket is an Intel Compute Stick Overview. INTEL COMPUTE STICK Overview: full-fledged PC size with flash drive Flasis Compact PC Intel Compute Stick ORIGINAL

To date, almost any TV, an additional monitor or even equipped with an HDMI port projector can turn into personal ComputerEquipped with Windows 10. And this will require only a few seconds. The secret of this magic transformation is a new generation of micro-desktops, like COMPUTE Stick from Intel for about 13,500 rubles ($ 159). They are only a bit larger than the USB key and are connected to the backup HDMI port.

Such microcomputers allow a new look at the concept of a pocket PC. Starting from the original Computer Stick, which produced a furor on CES 2015 and was modified in 2016, you will finally get a full-fledged desktop on the Windows OS size with a perochy knife, which can be worn in your pocket. The latest version of Computer Stick is worth 13,500 rubles ($ 159) in retail, although this price can even decrease.

All this is part of the trend turnover on miniaturization of such devices. Such consoles like Roku or Amazon Fire TV, have the size of a small book. Such solutions are also available for desktop computers. If, of course, you are ready to put up with some inconveniences.

Computer Stick, as well as its analogues, are not a Hi-End device. In fact, they are located somewhere at the level of inexpensive laptops worth up to $ 200. They carry the Intel Atom low-power processor, 2GB of RAM and flash storage to 32GB (most of which the operating system occupies).

However, those who need to quickly turn the TV or monitor to the computer, rarely require something more than simple web surfing, viewing streaming video or working with other online services for which such functionality is more than enough.

This year, COMPUTER STICK has become longer, but got the optional USB port

COMPUTER STICK 2016. What has changed?

Model 2016 evolved in a positive direction. Externally, it is all the same small lump with a matte surface and rounded corners. He is a little longer than the predecessor, but it is forgiven, because now he has two USB ports (one USB 3.0, and another USB 2.0) against one of the predecessor. The wifi antenna now supports the 802.11ac standard (although WiFi problems have noted yet at its predecessor), and the Intel Atom processor has been updated to the latest version called Cherry Trail. Although even with the old processor, the model last year loses HD-video very well. And this is despite the fact that ATOM processors, regardless of generation, are not intended for everyday work computers.

Specifications

  • Approximate price - 13 500 rubles ($ 159);
  • Processor - Intel Atom X5-Z8300, 1.44 GHz;
  • RAM - 2048MB DDR3 SDRAM 1600 MHz;
  • Video adapter - 128MB (selected) Intel HD Graphics;
  • Permanent memory - 32GB SSD;
  • Operating system - Windows 10 HOME (32-bit).

Design and functionality

Compute Stick design, regardless of generation, smooth and minimalistic. At least it seems so at first glance. And of course, its installation and launch is a bit more difficult than simply "insert into the HDMI port."

First, you need food. So do not forget about the Micro-USB cable and power supply. This time the cable is longer, a little less than a meter, but it is still an excessive wire. Perhaps in the future, in some new version HDMI, it will be possible to feed meals directly through the video port, but before that is still far away. Also, in case the dimensions do not allow you to insert a block directly to the HDMI port of the TV, an additional HDMI cable is provided.

Next to the queue - keyboard and / or mouse. There are several options here. You can connect wired versions (good now there are two USB ports). Or you can use wireless options by connecting them via a USB radio module or via Bluetooth. The last option is most preferred because you do not need to take USB ports with cables or radio models. Especially, taking into account the fact that the cables are sufficient.

Intel also offers an application called Intel Remote Keyboard, available for iOS and Android, which will allow you to connect the on-screen keyboard and touch pad from your smartphone or tablet. It is very convenient if you need only basic access to the system or you plan to use the mouse to navigate, and your smartphone screen keyboard for entering passwords or URL.

Ports and Connector

  • Video - HDMI;
  • Audio - no;
  • Data - 1xUSB 3.0, 1xUSB 2.0, Micro-SD Cart Reader to 128GB;
  • Network - WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0;
  • Optical drive - missing.

Performance

Last year, the first generation of Compute Stick had a good performance. Power is enough for Web surfing and media player. But she was also prone to sudden deceleration. New processorMounted for 2016 (or, if watching the names, Cherry Trail against Bay Trail) shows similar, or even more modest results on our Benchmark tests, but you will most likely not even feel the difference. They both compete with another Micro PC Kangaroo Mobile Desktop Computer and an inexpensive 100s laptop from Lenovo. Determine the explicit leader is quite difficult.

Well, as a dessert, you should not forget about Windows 10. Recall that last year's version had only Windows 8. At the same time, Windows 10 is better optimized for weak machines, which somewhat smoothes the inconvenience of use.

Following the test, the new model turned out a little null of its predecessor (probably due to Windows 10 and the Edge browser), but the simultaneous launch of several tasks still causes lags. However, with the main tasks, such as the launch of Netflix or YouTube, the mini-PC is completely coping.

Computer Stick 2016 will also do well with undemanding games, but the small amount of memory, which remains after the operating system is launched, leaves a limited choice of outdated games, like Torchlight or Amnesia: The Dark Descent, which will be launched almost on any platform. If you want something more, remember the micro-SD card slot that support cards up to 128GB.

Output

Prices for micro PCs have greatly fell, closely approaching a 100-dollar mark, so $ 159 for Intel Compute.r stick is expensive. And this is despite the good performance (relative) of the new configuration, as well as two USB ports that can be very useful.

In principle, the same Asus Chromebit can boast the best characteristics, even for a smaller fee. But he has chromeos, and therefore no new applications. If you need a more powerful micro PC based on Windows, pay attention to the latest version of the Core M from Intel, which comes out this year. But keep in mind that it will be two times more expensive.

As a device for watching video or web surfing for everyday use or travel, protected transportation business data or applications, or just try to breathe new life In the old TV or Compute Stick monitor is pretty knocked out of the price niche. But if Intel can bring down the price to $ 99, then I will say that it will be a product from the "Must Have" category for anyone who is interested in such a functionality.

Pros: The second generation of the Intel Compute Stick pocket computer received several improvements and perfectly copes with everyday web surfing and running HD video.

Minuses: Very little memory, so installing applications or download video is problematic. Despite the modern design, additional adapters and ball cables strongly spoil the impression.

Outcome: Intel corrected last year's blunders in pocket computers, but be prepared for weak characteristics. However, for email, social networks or video - resources provided quite.

Single-chip systems of the Bay Trail family are found today in smartphones, in tablets, on compact motherboards and in microcomputers. The Silvermont architecture turned out to be a significant step forward for Intel and allowed her to strengthen its position in the mobile market. The most successful turned out to be, perhaps, the series Z3700, which even opened the second breath of the microcomputer segment.

Having four kernels and typical 2 or 2.2 W consumption, these models have made it possible to create products with the support of the Windows operating system that can cope with the common mass tasks of the "typewriter" - the Internet, office, multimedia. At the same time, it should be understood that such a reduction in power did not pass without a trace. The manufacturer-oriented chips on the segment of the chips are essential limitations from the point of view of the hardware configuration, including the maximum amount of RAM in 1, 2 or 4 GB and the lack of modern fast external peripheral interfaces. However, as experience has shown, for a specific category of users, such products are very interesting, especially if you consider them a relatively low price.

In this spring, we have already tested one of the similar models, and today we will get acquainted with the intel microcomputer developed by the Intel itself, which they called Intel Compute Stick. One of the key characteristics of the device is the simplicity of use - "Connect, Compute, IT's That Simple."

This solution in the format of "HDMI-DONLED" is interesting for its compact dimensions sufficient for popular performance tasks and affordable cost. The company positions the device as an addition to monitors or televisions that turns them into a "real computer". Among the use options are mentioned basic office PCs, multimedia, subtle client and video advertising.

Two modifications of the device are presented:

  • with Windows 8.1 WITH BING operating system, 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB drive
  • with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB Drive

The remaining characteristics of these modifications coincide. In this testing was attended by the first version.

Supplies and appearance

Intel has experience and opportunities to ensure the attractiveness of their solutions on the shelves of retail chains, photographs in online store catalogs, and just in the hands of the user. Intel Compute Stick comes in a brightly decorated box of strong cardboard, which some smartphone suppliers can envy. Used glossy and matte varnish, there are pictures of the device, technical specifications, description ports and connectors. In Russian - only a couple of words with an explanation of the configuration.

At the top of the box in a special inset, the computer itself is located. The rest of the space is occupied by a short (20 cm) HDMI cable ("Mama dad"), a MICRO-USB meter cable, a 5 second power supply unit with a set of inserts for different outlets, a brief instruction on top of work and a card to activate an annual subscription to antivirus McAfee. This is quite enough to work with the computer.

True, there are small comments on individual elements. In particular, the HDMI cable could be done hard with the memorization of the form, and to put the output for the cable on the power supply side, and not from the end. Still, when we talk about compactness, spending 11 cm from the plane of the socket is not very convenient.

On the manufacturer's website in the Support section, you can download driver and BIOS updates for this device. True for the second there is a certain remark to the complexity of the installation process. Of course, against the background of almost complete absence of support from similar nameless products, it is not bad, but in this case it cost somehow simplify and improve these moments.

The computer housing is made of strong black plastic. One element at the same time is glossy, which is difficult to call the optimal choice, given the positioning of the model, and the second matte. The overall dimensions without taking into account the HDMI connector are 38 × 104 × 12.5 mm.

At one of the short ends there is a connector for connecting to the monitor. Fortunately, the manufacturer used a full-sized HDMI version, so in most cases no adapters will be required. However, it should be noted that the model width of the model is large enough, so that not with all TVs will be convenient to use it. In this case, a complete extension will be useful.

A minus use of such a format is the complexity of placement in a rack with equipment or at a high distance from the receiver, since the required cables of sufficient length are found in the range of profile stores substantially less than traditional options. Perhaps it was worth adding a compact adapter to the box to go to the HDMI jack.

On the upper glossy lid of the device, except the manufacturer's logo, you can see two ventilation grids (another pair is present on the ends). And under the big one is visible a fan. Yes, despite the low stated power consumption of the device, there is an active cooling system in it. As we will see in tests, this solution ensures the absence of processor trolling even at high load, but it leads to the fact that the silent model is already impossible. There is also a blue-colored power LED, and there is a lace hole on the edge, which is likely to be used for basic protection against theft.

On long ends are all connectors and ports of the model. On one slot for memory cards with a latch. To install or delete a map, you may need some kind of tool. On the other hand, it does not protrude from the hull during operation.

On the other hand, we see the power button. Perhaps it is too close to HDMI, but still quite convenient because of its form. Next comes micro-usb to feed the power to the power and standard USB 2.0 TYPE A for connecting the periphery.

On the bottom cover of the system can be seen identification numbers Models. It is understood that the device is so light (55 g), which it will simply "hang" on the connector or an HDMI extension. Not the most successful option in terms of reliability. Especially if you consider relatively weak micro-usb and the greater probability of simultaneous use and the "large" USB port.

In general, we see that in favor compact size I had to go for some compromises in the design. The solution is rather a product for guys or sample for other companies than a truly massive product for the end user.

Specifications

As the main element of the hardware platform, the solution uses SOC Intel Atom Z3735F. We have already met with this model in past publications. This chip is indicated by SDP in 2.2 watts, so it is quite appropriate for this device format. The model has four kernels with support for 64-bit calculations. In the absence of a load, their frequency is reduced to 500 MHz, its regular value is 1.33 GHz, and in overclocking mode (Burst) can reach 1.83 GHz. Today, when automatic frequency control technologies are actively used, the exact value does not have much sense, since the criteria for their choice are installed including the system manufacturer.

As we wrote earlier, this modification of the processor is one of the younger in the family. It supports only 2 GB of single-channel RAM, does not have a USB 3.0 controller, and the maximum resolution on the video output is FullHD.

In the device under consideration, 2 GB DDR3L-1333 was installed. "From the box" of the operating system is already occupied by about 700 MB, so we do not have to talk about the possibility of effective multisaded work with resource-intensive applications.

The Intel HD Graphics graphic controller supports DirectX 11 and OGL 3.2 and has hardware blocks for decoding of popular formats (which are not included with H.265). HDMI video output allows you to connect monitors with a resolution up to 1920 × 1080, and is also the only wired output of sound output from the computer.

As with another micropka on the basis of such a platform, we tried to check the media center script and with the device under consideration in this article. It should be noted that due to the limited velocity of the wireless module, the use of this model for full-fledged video viewing in maximum quality and with HD sound is not a very convenient option. In addition, and here we have certain difficulties with the bitstreaming of multichannel audio tracks. So in this case, you can only speak more about the basic functions to view online video or files with stereo tracks and a low bitrate.

The device is equipped with one standard (Type a) port of USB 2.0. It can be used to connect the keyboard, mouse, drives and other standard devices. Unfortunately, there was no place for at least one port on the housing. So in fact, the most convenient option will be using a computer with input devices connected via Bluetooth, or working with a USB hub in the monitor.

The built-in SSD in this model is presented in the device manager as Samsung MBG4GC. It has an EMMC interface and 32 GB. On the disk there is a 6.35 GB operating system recovery section, so that the user remains about 22.55 GB, and free "out of the box" 19.8 GB. After installation actual updates At the time of testing, the amount of free space is reduced to 16.9 GB. Mix the presence in the MicroSDXC port computer, so that you can relatively easily expand the amount of space for storing the user data.

The only regular network connection option is a built-in Wi-Fi controller based on the RealTek RTL8723BS chip connected via SDIO, since other methods in this platform are not provided. This microcircuit was presented last year and ensures the implementation of the 802.11B / G / N wireless adapter with a 2.4 GHz band and the maximum connection speed of 150 Mbps, as well as Bluetooth 4.0. About BLE support in the specification of the device is not mentioned.

Present in the product and implementation of wireless displays, standard supported Windows. When working with the NetGear PCTV3000 adapter, the permission of an additional monitor was 1366 × 768, it was possible to display video and sound.

A Micro-USB port is used to power the computer. The stated requirements for the power supply - 5 in 2 A. Real consumption we will try to evaluate in the testing section.

It is quite expected that there are no possibilities for changing the configuration in such a compact building. The only thing that remains the user is to establish a memory card to increase the disk space.

The above modification comes with a 32-bit version of the Microsoft Windows WITH BING operating system. No additional software on the computer is installed, except for a complete subscription to the antivirus, but it will be necessary to download it yourself.

When the device is first turned on, the user will be asked to specify several operating system operation parameters, including the ability to select the interface language (Russian in the list is present). Further exploitation of the product is no different from traditional personal computers.

Testing

Since we have already met with such a platform and in tablets and in microcomputers, the approximate level of its performance is known. The product is suitable for mass tasks that are not demanding to the speed of calculations - viewing Internet sites (with a reasonable number of tabs in the browser), work with email, edit simple office documents, consumption of multimedia content (photos, music, video), communication through the network, casual games, and so on.

Main comments in this case refer to a small amount of RAM and low performance network access. With the first problem, you can fight the launch of only the applications you need, and the second you can try to solve using external network adapters with USB interface.

As we wrote above, the performance of the system in the case of such solutions does not depend on not how much from the main platform, how many from the settings of the mode of operation of the processor, the selection of the RAM Modules and the characteristics of the system drive. So let's start this section from checking individual components.

The computing cores of a single-grip system in idle mode operate at 500 MHz. When the load appears in the form of processor stress tests of the AIDA64 program, they accelerate to 1583 MHz. The temperature of the nuclei in this mode is about 60 degrees. Recall that this product has a built-in fan, which allows the heating at a reasonable level in the entire range of operating temperatures from 0 to 35 degrees.

If you give the load directly to all components of the system, then temperatures increase to about 70 degrees, but also in such a trolling mode does not occur. As for the clock frequencies, the kernels are switched between states of 1333 and 1583 MHz.

You can see the maximum declared frequency in 1833 MHz on a single-bill load, for example, in the LINX test, running into one stream.

As we see, the fan strongly helps provide high level Performance and ensure a comfortable temperature mode. The price of this is slightly increased, compared with some other similar solutions, the size of the computer case and the noise produced by the fan. Fortunately, if there is no load and heating, it is completely turned off. Determine the exact parameters of the fan operation algorithm is not possible. The observation of it during stress tests has shown that it is likely that it turns on when the temperatures reaches about 60 degrees and turns off when they decrease to 50 degrees. At the same time, the speed of rotation of the fan is constant and check it programmatically impossible. Such characteristics lead to the fact that during the tests Futuremark, the fan almost constantly worked.

A comparison with a previous system that does not equip the active cooling system is clearly in favor of the Intel solution. Most likely, this will ensure a higher level of performance in the resource-intensive tasks due to the lack of reduction in the frequency of processor nuclei.

Let us now see the AIDA64 report on operational memory. Recall that this SOC uses a single-channel memory controller.

The results almost completely coincide with the previously seen from this platform. A similar comment can also be given for synthetic GPGPU tests.

So from the point of view of the manufacturer's parameters of the processor and the operational memory, there are no comments.

More important for the user has the speed of the system drive. Using the EMMC interface in itself does not guarantee certain performance. Much depends on the controller and from flash chips.

In this case, we can say that the choice turned out to be quite successful - streaming speed and recording speeds exceed 160 and 70 MB / s, respectively. This, of course, is not SATA and not PCIE, but for this segment the value is very good.

Let's see at the same time and to work with external drives - the SanDisk Ultra memory card and connected via USB 2.0 (using a hub and additional power) solid-state drive.

Considering that in this case it will be more likely to go on the exchange of large amounts of data with a regular disk, and direct work with external drives, shown maximum speeds at the level of 20-30 MB / s can also be assessed as quite worthy.

Today, the use of computers without network access is almost impossible, so that the characteristics and speed of network adapters can play great importance. In this case, the platform limits the manufacturer with an SDIO interface, and the wireless adapter installed in the model under consideration does not affect the imagination and is similar to the smartphones set in massive inexpensive models - 802.11n in the range of 2.4 GHz with one antenna and maximum connection speed of 150 Mbps. In ideal conditions of direct visibility at a distance of several meters, it shows a capacity of 50 Mbps. However, in reality, given the device format and the likely place of its placement, everything can be much worse. When installing the monitor and connecting to the router, which was at a distance of about six meters per wall, the speed decreases to 15 Mbps. It is not easy to talk about comfortable work in this case. For example, after the first enabling of the computer, he decided to download about one gigabyte of updates for the operating system ... In addition, such speeds significantly limit multimedia scenarios with network sources or media library.

We now turn to the integral benchmarks Futuremark - PcMark 7, Pcmark 8 and 3DMark. For comparison, the tables will feature Foxconn Ultra Nano PC on a similar platform, which we tested a couple of months ago. Recall that the synthetics showed the proximity of the participants in computing tests, the speed difference drives and significant differences in the work of the processor under high load. All tests were conducted with the resolution of the connected monitor 1920 × 1080 points.

Depending on the scenario, the advantage of the first participant is from 14 to 40%. Explain this is just a faster drive, perhaps it will not work. Most likely, the role also plays central processor Systems. This test version has no convenient tools for checking its parameters, but PCMark 8 reports are more informative. But let's see first on the results.

Creative Accelerated 3.0956 855
Work Accelerated 2.01137 1143

In the first two tests, the advantage of the Intel solution is about ten percent, and the third works in the same way on these devices. The test of the system drive in Intel Compute Stick has not been carried out due to its small volume.

This version of the test package has a useful possibility of viewing temperature graphs (turquoise line) and frequency (purple line) processor, which will allow us to compare two systems in more detail. In this case, graphics refer to the launch of the Creative template. The scale of time is slightly different, but some features can be found.

First of all, it is worth noting that the average temperature line at the Intel system goes at 60 degrees, and the opponent is 80 degrees. As for the frequency, the first participant boasts a stable 1583 MHz in the Music to Go and Video Editing Part 2 V2 templates, while the second solution is forced to sometimes reset the frequency up to 500 MHz, which clearly affects the result.

Let's see now on the graphic tests of the 3DMark package. Despite the fact that it is impossible to call solutions to the game, the graphics performance today still plays a role in other applications.

In ICE Storm scripts, the advantage of the Intel solution ranges from 20% to 50%. But Cloud Gate differs slightly in products. Let's see here, what was the situation with the temperatures and frequency of frames during the ICE Storm test.

As in the past comparison, you first pay attention to the temperature scale, and then on the dynamics of change of frame frequency. There is another confirmation of the correctness of the selected Intel solutions with active cooling.

Despite the use of the model in this case, one of the younger modifications of the Bay Trail-T family, we can say that it is quite successfully coping with the tasks declared for it in terms of performance. Of course, certain compromises remain from the point of view of multitasking, the speed of the network and the volume of the drive, but when you understand these borders, the device may be in demand for many categories of users.

As a supplement, we give the value obtained in several scenarios by the power by the power device. The model was connected to the monitor, in uSB port The Logitech wireless receiver is installed for the keyboard and mouse, and in the microSD slot there was a 32 GB memory card. The assessment was carried out averaging in five minutes of measurements of the Micro-USB current consumed in several scenarios: inaction, wireless network exchange, CPU stress test in AIDA64, stress test of all components in AIDA64.

As we can see, in the requirements for the power supply unit 2 and are indicated with a large stock (true, we did not take into account the use of external drives). Real maximum consumption in our configuration only a little exceeds 5 W. So in most practical scenarios using a computer can be quite enough and a regular USB output on a TV or other device.

Conclusion

Before giving an assessment to the device, let's look at prices. For the referenced version with Windows, the manufacturer indicates the recommended value of $ 149, the version with Ubuntu is planned to be sold at $ 99. Given that for use you will need only the keyboard and mouse, these numbers look quite attractive. As expected from such a manufacturer as an Intel, the computer has a good design and an interesting appearance, a qualitatively assembled and has sufficient complete set. Separately, it is worth mentioning an effective solution to the overheating issue, allowing to ensure stable performance. However, we would recommend a potential buyer to carefully assess our requirements before purchasing this device.

The microcomputer is quite capable of cope with the traditional basic set of Internet tasks + office + multimedia. This is facilitated by the effective cores of the main chip, a good chart block and a fast system drive. Optimization of the Windows 8.1 operating system also plays a certain role. But to approach this solution as a familiar desktop computer, even if the entry level is probably not worth it. The limited amount of RAM can affect multitasking, and the absence of quick external interfaces reduces comfort when performing some tasks.

We have already mentioned above about the use of Intel Compute Stick offered by the manufacturer. Testing has shown that they all fully fit into the concept and capabilities of the model. We can offer a few more - additional computer For a kitchen, living room or children, mobile solution for those users who need to work often in different places, the emulator of the game consoles of past generations, a microscower, a home automation controller, a solution for transport. True, in almost every case, you will have to go for some compromises, for example, in terms of connecting the periphery, appearance or convenience of control, but, in general, we do not see significant problems in these tasks. It is also worth mentioning the need to independently solve issues with additional software, for example, to implement a multifunctional media center.

It would be interesting to look at a similar microcomputer with senior versions of a family, with a similar heatpack, a faster RAM controller, support for 4 GB volumes, increased processor core and graphics frequencies. True, most likely, it will be a completely different segment in terms of cost, since the chips themselves are more than twice as expensive, and the fee is required to be more complicated. And there already to Intel NUC not far. In any case, a full X86-computer with an operating system for $ 150, and even under the Intel brand - pay attention to this combination is clearly worth it.

Intel Compute Stick Review | First impressions

At first we thought that Intel Compute Stick. It is perfect as a portable PC that can turn any TV with HDMI support to the working computer, although for this it would be necessary to carry a keyboard and mouse with you. But then we adjusted our opinion. The device can turn a large TV to a working computer that allows you to pursue the Internet, lead the chat in Skype or work with e-mail, and all this through the usual Windows interface. The potential problem, in our opinion, is the shortage of computing power and RAM when working with several programs. There should be no single problems with solitary applications.

Despite small sizes, one of the main problems Intel Compute Stick. is its external form. With the length of the device 103 mm per TV, there should be enough space for installation. Some TVs have HDMI connectors on the side of the display, but there are models that become very tightly to the wall, install such TVs Intel Compute Stick. Without an HDMI cable, HDMI is unlikely to succeed.

The sample entered the review included a 20-centimeter HDMI extension, but we used a 90-centimeter extension agent to Intel Compute Stick. It was in front of the display, facilitating access to the USB port and the power button. Intel Compute Stick. Light enough, and if you wish, it can be left hanging on a 20-centimeter extender behind the screen.

By the way, about USB ports. Depending on how many devices you want to connect to Intel Compute Stick.You might need a USB hub, especially if there is no keyboard and mice running via Bluetooth. According to Intel representatives, to install additional USB ports in Intel Compute Stick. There is not enough internal space. In addition, a prerequisite for the operation of the device is the presence of a TV with HDMI support. Also the company confirmed that Intel Compute Stick. It will only work with direct HDMI input (without adapters).

Intel Compute Stick Review | External description

Intel Compute Stick. It has a minimum external set of interfaces and controls. One USB 2.0 slot is available for additional devices, and a microSD slot is provided to extend the storage. We have installed a 32 GB card in it without any problems. Intel Compute Stick. Also equipped with a Bluetooth 4.0 module, so if you have a keyboard and a mouse with Bluetooth support, you can use the wireless link and leave the USB port free.

For the most part, the Bluetooth keyboard worked well. With Logitech Folio there were no problems. But when we connected the cheaper keyboard Rocksoul Bluetooth, then the frequent connection breaks have noticed, because of which it had to constantly reinstate it to Intel Compute Stick.. In this situation, we do not tend to blame Intel Compute Stick.Since Folio worked without problems, but the keyboard performance under the Rocksouul brand is still questionable.

External Elements Intel Compute Stick

The power button is located on the side next to the HDMI connector, which is not very convenient. When you disable or configure the device, it has to take it very carefully to accidentally not press this button. We hope that in later versions this flaw will fix.

Included Intel Compute Stick. There is a 90-centimeter power cable. One of its connector is inserted into the power socket on the device, and the USB connector is in the nest 5 V.

To ensure physical security instead of Kensington Castle in Intel Compute Stick. Two interconnected excavations on the sides of the case are used. Through them, a thin metal cable, which is then crimped. This type of lock is characteristic of industrial products.

Intel Compute Stick Review | Internal organization

Intel Compute Stick. Equipped with a quad-core Atom Z3735F processor, belonging to the Soc Intel family on the Bay Trail architecture. This 64-bit SOC was presented at the beginning of 2014. It has a second-level cache memory of 2 MB and works at a base frequency of 1.33 GHz (1.83 GHz in acceleration mode). RAM represents the single-channel memory of the DDR3L standard, with a frequency of 1333 MHz and 2 GB.

To work with graphics Intel Compute Stick. Uses graphic processor Intel HD Graphics integrated into the ATOM Z3735F processor. With Intel HD Graphics Control Panel, users can adjust the general image output settings, manage the power settings and create user profiles that allow you to save video settings for various application conditions.

Open the case easily, but all the most interesting is under the radiator

The storage system is represented by the Samsung MBG4GC EMMC MBG4GC EMMC flash memory. It is designed for mobile devices and uses high-density Nand-memory MLC MLC chips with MMC controller. From 32 GB, designated on the box, Windows Disk Management shows that 23.04 GB goes under the root file system, 5.86 GB is under the recovery section, and the remaining 100 MB is given under EFI System Partition.

For wireless communication, one-band Wi-Fi module Azurewave AW-NB177NF M.2 is responsible. It supports 802.11 b / g / n standards and operates in a range of 2.4 GHz, simultaneously providing bluetooth connection 4.0. At rated speed 150 Mbps, the performance is comparable to the Wi-Fi adapter N150, which is much slower than modern Wi-Fi AC standard device.

Intel Compute Stick Review | Exploitation

The very first thing we wanted to check is like Intel Compute Stick. Changes with playback online video. To our surprise, watch movies and shows on Netflix and Hulu was quite comfortable. Video on YouTube was shown without delay. Streaming playing smoothly, and built in Intel Compute Stick. The audio controller displays a pretty clean sound on TV speakers. During video playback on NetFlix, small delays in the movement of the mouse across the screen were observed, but it did not affect streaming content. This problem, as a rule, occurs when the mouse is used further than three meters from the PC. But in our case, there were about 2.5 meters from the display to the mouse.

We also tried to use Remote Desktop (remote desktop) on Intel Compute Stick. And connect to a computer via Wi-Fi. During the first connection and entry into the computer there was some delay. Usually, when using Remote Desktop such a delay is not observed, but, taking into account that Wi-Fi module Intel Compute Stick. Does not support 802.11ac and what we work with SOC, the Remote Desktop session could be too heavy for the device. But after the first session, the startup time has decreased. However, by connecting an 802.11ac network USB adapter on Intel Compute Stick., the difference in the response we did not notice.

Intel Compute Stick Review | Equipment

In a box with a sample entered to us for testing, we found the following components:

  • Intel Compute Stick with pre-installed Windows 8.1 Bing 32-bit;
  • USB power adapter alternating current, 5 V, 2a;
  • USB cable for a power adapter 75 cm;
  • hDMI extension 20 cm long;
  • adapters for power outlets of different standards.

According to Intel, retail version Intel Compute Stick. will have the same package, plus instruction and user manual.

Intel Compute Stick Review | Additional accessories

Since in version with Windows you will receive a storage of only 32 GB, it is not necessary to ignore the possibility of its expansion with maps of MicroSd.. The device supports cards with a capacity of up to 128 GB, and it is worth useful. The built-in flash memory is not enough for a long time, especially if you save the files locally, so it will not hurt an additional place for storage.

In addition, you can use cloud storage. Considering that Intel Compute Stick. Works running Windows 8.1, a variety of options are available for storing data in the cloud. For example, Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox and Google Drive. Provide free repository a certain capacity, but for the additional space on such a disk you will have to pay extra.

ACCESSORIES FOR INTEL COMPUTE STICK

Using the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse justifies it, because so you can save the only USB port free. Wireless technology Intel Compute Stick. Release the user from the wires hanging along the floor. If there is no possibility to use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, you can buy wireless USB Keyboard with a Trekpad or a set consisting of a keyboard and mouse with a common USB receiver.

Also, it is also not superfluous in the list will be a USB hub with an external power supply that allows you to connect devices, especially periphery, with an energy consumption of more than 500 mA. Insofar as Intel Compute Stick. It supports only USB 2.0, the corresponding hub will be inexpensive. Hubs uSB standard 2.0 are excellent for USB card readers, keyboards, mice or webcams. If the speed of the built-in wireless communication module is not enough, you can install a wired USB controller or more fast USB Wi-Fi adapter.

Intel Compute Stick Review | Testing technique

For testing Intel Compute Stick. We had to borrow several techniques from tablet reviews and network equipment. It was also necessary to take into account the low productivity of the device. We understand that this is not a gaming system and not a workstation, so we have appropriate expectations formed. In addition to performance, we are interested in functionality. Intel Compute Stick. As an additional computing resource for a TV or monitor.

To test the processor, graphics and drives we have connected Intel Compute Stick. To the 24-inch ASUS VS247 monitor with HDMI port.

Web tests were carried out on the same ASUS monitor, and to analyze the network bandwidth at different distances between the two-band asus router RT-AC66U with Ethernet connected to Ethernet Mini PC ASRock Visionx (Core i7-4712mq, GPU AMD HD8850M, 8 GB of RAM, SSD for 256 GB and HDD 2 TB) We used a small cart.

The ATOM Z3735F quad-core processor was tested using Primate Lab Geekbench 3. Geekbench is a cross-platform benchmark designed to test processor and memory performance. One of the main advantages of GeekBench is access to a large database of PRIMATE Labs tested devices, including platforms running Windows, iOS and Android. Today we are interested in single-core and multi-core tests using integer calculations and floating semicolons, as well as tasks loading RAM.

Speed \u200b\u200bof consecutive and arbitrary I / O operations on integrated sAMSUNG drive We will check with CrystalDiskmark.

The Passmark Advanced Networking module makes it possible to test pass-through transmission speed by Wi-Fi. The program is installed on each computer in the client / server configuration. On one it starts as a server, on the other, as a client. For TCP traffic test from Intel Compute Stick. On ASRock Mini-PC, we used a standard fixed block size of 16384 bytes. Test results show the obtained and transmitted data, the average speed in Kbps and the processor loading. Considering that Intel Compute Stick. Supports only a transmission at a frequency of 2.4 GHz, we limited other devices in comparative network tests in the same range.

Microcomputers are different - really "micro" and slightly more, not very productive and generally not enough for that suitable, except for the Internet surfing. To this kind today there is a whole mass of various devices with various capabilities and purpose, but finding enough in its class the model is quite powerful in its class. It is even more difficult to find such a PC in Russia. The models that are in the market today are mostly suitable just for the Internet surfing and watching films with far from the highest resolution. The Intel itself decided to correct the situation by releasing the microcomputer on the basis of the hardware platform of its own development. We are talking about the Intel Bay Trail platform in the option Intel Bay Trail-T, intended primarily for tablet computersBut successfully applied in many other devices. In the new microcomputer, everything from Intel - and design, and filling. Well, who, if not Intel herself, knows better, in which form factor and with what functionality should the device on the Intel hardware platform?

Contents of delivery

The device comes in a Corporate Corporate Cardboard Box for Intel Blue. Inside, in addition to the microcomputer itself, the following accessories were found:

  • hDMI cable;
  • uSB cable ↔ Micro-USB;
  • power adapter with a set of four forks of different standards;
  • brief printed user guide;
  • activation map of the annual subscription to McAfee antivirus.

With the appointment of accessories, we will get acquainted in more detail later, in while we consider the technical characteristics of the novelties.

The microcomputer is available in two versions - with different OS: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and Windows 8.1 with Bing. We had a second option for testing. Interestingly, the version of the Microcomputer Intel Compute Stick under the control of Ubuntu, the manufacturer was slightly delivered by providing it with smaller volumes of RAM and the disk subsystem and making, respectively, cheaper. As for the second variant of this device, which came to us in the test laboratory, its OS has a 32-bit kernel. But the word Bing in the title does not mean for the user, except that this is not the most popular search engine built into the Internet Explorer browser. Want - use it, and not want - any other.

Information about the processor and microcircuit set

As mentioned above, the basis of the Intel Compute Stick microcomputer is the Intel Bay Trail-T platform with a four-core Intel Atom Z3735F, which belongs to the second generation of processors for this platform, seen the light of the spring last year and developed on the 22-nanometer Silvermont architecture. This processor is one of the most inexpensive in the ruler, and therefore has a minimal clock frequencywhich in the nominal operation is 1.33 GHz and can be increased to 1.83 GHz in turbo mode. The amount of second-level kesh is 2 MB. The processor refers to very economical models. SDP (SCENARIO DESIGN POWER), that is, the level of medium power consumption during everyday work, for it is only 2.2 watts. Obviously, the active cooling system is not required for this processor, but in the case of Intel Compute Stick, it is still implemented.

In general, in the Intel Bay Trail-T family, there are many more interesting models. Why the manufacturer opted for Intel Atom Z3735F, which is distinguished by a number of serious restrictions related to RAM, video outputs and other interfaces, not clear. Most likely, this is done from economic considerations, because a more productive device will be more expensive, which means that the consumer circle is already completely different.

Memory information

One of the most important restrictions of the Intel Atom Z3735F processor is that it has a single-channel RAM controller, maximum volume which is not four, as in other modifications of the processor, but two gigabytes. It is so much and planned on the Intel Compute Stick system board. The DDR3L-1333 module is used, that is, the frequency maximum possible for Intel ATOM Z3735F. The amount of RAM at the microcomputer is small, but its modification with Ubuntu has an even smaller value - only 1 GB.

Information about the integrated video adapter

The Intel Atom Z3735F processor has an integrated Intel HD Graphics graphics core with four actuators operating on a base clock frequency of 311 MHz and, if necessary, capable of accelerated to 646 MHz. We have already got acquainted with this video adapter, but in different processors it has different operating frequencies, so the performance and capabilities of Intel HD Graphics can only be tested after testing. We only add that in this case, the video adapter works with a resolution no higher than 1920 × 1080 points, that is, Full HD, while other Intel Bay Trail-T family processors can output the image with a 4K resolution.

The microcomputer dial subsystem is represented by the SAMSUNG MBG4GC module 32 GB (29.0 GB available). The disk is represented by one working partition capacity of 22.55 GB, on which the operating system is installed. The remaining volume is given to the service information and the recovery section. As in the case of rapid memory, there is an acute desire to increase the capacity of the built-in disk subsystem at Intel Compute Stick at least twice, but, alas, this is not possible. Well, the modification of the microcomputer with Ubuntu has an EMMC module with a capacity of only 8 GB. In this case, nothing but the video player and still a pair of utilities, it simply does not fit on this disk. You will have to use flash cards, because on board Intel Compute Stick there is a MicroSDXC format reader.

To connect external drives and other devices on board a microcomputer, a single USB port is provided. The fact that the port is the only one is easily explained by the lack of free space on board the novelty. In addition, the manufacturer posted not a reduced, but a full-size version of the USB port of type A. If necessary, it will be necessary to use the USB hub, as the role of which, by the way, the video pointer itself can be connected to which Compute Stick will be connected. But what uSB interface Intel Compute Stick has a specification not 3.0, and 2.0, it is worth classifying to disadvantages in which the processor used is to be failed. While other models from the Intel Bay Trail-T family have a built-in USB 3.0 controller, the Intel Atom Z3735F processor differs only with the 2.0 bus.

A set of wireless communications from Intel Compute Stick is ordinary. The Realtek RTL8723BS module is installed on board, providing the B / G / N and Bluetooth 4.0 standard. As for sound, it is broadcast by the HDMI interface - no separate connections in the device are provided. Power is powered via USB, for which there is an optional Micro-USB port on board, which can be connected either with one of the USB ports of the video shock, or with the power adapter from the delivery kit.

Appearance

Looks like an Intel Compute Stick as a regular USB flash drive, just not too compact and with HDMI interface instead of USB. The device is placed without problems in the pocket, so if you wish, you can use one computer and at work, and at home, and in the country, and friends. Just on the road, it will not work with him - not to wear a monitor with you.

The novelty housing is made of black plastic and consists of two halves. The lower part and side faces have a rough surface, but the top panel is made lacquered. Naturally, it instantly attracts fingerprints and dust to them, and then the first scratches will appear on it. An extremely impractical manufacturer solution The user can compensate only to the fact that it will not remove the protective polyethylene film from the gloss or takes its own.

The main interface of the device - the HDMI video output - is located on one of the narrow side faces. Since the microcomputer housing is still not exactly "micro", without a short extension from the delivery kit, connect it to the video naval can be very problematic.

All other Intel Compute Stick interfaces are located on long lateral faces. On the one hand are located uSB ports 2.0 and Micro-USB, power management button, as well as a loop for fastening some lace or cable, ensuring the safety of the device if the video model is placed in a public place. On the other hand, only the MicroSDXC memory card reader is located. As for the top lacquered panel, it is located on it the LED power indicator of the blue and two large ventilation windows, followed by one of which the miniature fan is visible. Small ventilation holes carry side faces.

The manufacturer does not assume that the user will open the plastic case of the device, as there are no replaceable parts inside it. Nevertheless, the novelty did not make much difficulty. Everything inner space It occupies a motherboard closed with a composite aluminum radiator. A huge USB port type A looks here as something from another world - strange and archaic. However, its presence is an undoubted plus of the design, so it's not worth finding.

The compact fan is fixed on the housing cover and is connected to the connector on the system board with a long and very thin wire. With three-resting sides, the fan case has a deaf wall. And only that side of its side face, which is addressed to the radiator, as well as the lower plane are open to the fence of heated air.

Testing

In order to compare the performance of Intel Compute Stick, we used the results of testing one of the contemporaries of this device in our laboratory of the ECS Liva X model. This is not such a compact, but still a mini-PC, which is based on the Intel Bay Trail-M platform with the Intel Celeron N2808 dual-core processor, operating at a frequency of 1.58 to 2.25 GHz. It has a 4 GB of displaced DDR3L-1333 system on the DDR3L-1333 system board and the same as the Intel Compute Stick, an integrated Intel HD Graphics core with one difference - the maximum clock of the kernel is not 646, and 792 MHz. The disk subsystem in these PCs is also similar. ECS LIVA X is represented by the EMMC module TOSHIBA THGBMBG9D8KBAIG capacity of 64 GB.

Performance

Unfortunately, to fully test in our traditional methodology in the case of Intel Compute Stick is not possible. The thing is that part of the test packets, such as Cinebench R15 or FPFLAC encoder, is designed to work only in a 64-bit environment, and on our microcomputer installed 32-bit version of Windows 8.1. Testing in Adobe Photoshop CS6 could not be completed due to the insufficient volume of the disk drive, although Intel Compute Stick resources for the functioning of the program itself is enough. However, to evaluate the performance rather and that part of the tests that completed successfully.

Despite the smaller clock frequency of the processor and twice as minimal compared to ECS Liva X, the amount of RAM, the Intel Compute Stick microcomputer has demonstrated performance, almost identical to the possibilities of its larger competitor. In terms of tests, the ECS Liva X minicomputer broke out, and in others it was slightly ahead of the Intel Compute Stick microcomputer, but this difference is completely insignificant. Here are just the dimensions of today's guest laboratory several times less than Ecs Liva X, which in itself gives reason to think.

In general, the productivity and possibilities of the novelty are enough for solving office tasks and to create on the basis of this device home Center Entertainment that allows you to watch movies in Full HD, listen to music and even work with various multimedia programs. It grips only a critical amount of RAM, which simply does not physically give the user to work with several programs simultaneously. It remains only to fantasize, to which this tiny device could be capable of, if it was built in a slightly more productive processor from the same Intel Bay Trail-T family, working with 4 GB of RAM in two-channel mode and allowing the image to resolve 4 K.

Of course, for the possibilities of the integrated video adapter, Intel HD Graphics is completely insufficient. Due to the slightly smaller graphics core operating frequencies in the 3DMark test, the Intel Compute Stick microcomputer has slightly lagged behind its larger competitor. Let's go back to the previous "if ...": Senior versions of Intel Atom Z37x5 processors have an integrated video adapter with a core frequency up to 792 MHz, as well as at the ECS LIVA X processor, which would give the microcomputer from Intel the ability to compose results, and maybe forward. But what is, that is. However, the gaming capabilities and ECS Liva X, and Intel Compute Stick are still suitable only for sitting on uncomplicated Internet strategies or any digital desktop games - and no more.

In addition to the tests of traditional laptops and PC techniques, for Intel Compute Stick we have spent several additional research. The first concerns its disk subsystem represented by the EMMC 5.0 module. Test results in Specialized programs ATTO DISK BEMCHMARK and CrystaldiskMark differ, but not much. The drive demonstrates not fantastic, but quite decent productivity, which is significantly higher than most of the majority of 2.5-inch hard drives, but lower than that of modern SSD modules.

An important role for such a compact device with a small volume with a disk space and without a wire network adapter plays the speed of wireless data transmission, and therefore we decided to check the performance of the built-in Wi-Fi module. In testing participated dual-band router NETGEAR WNDR3800 connected via a wired gigabit interface to a test stand with ATHEROS AR8151 controller, which serves an end point. Testing was carried out within the same room. The data transfer rate was 45-60 Mbps, which can be estimated as a completely acceptable result. Such performance is rather not only for easy data transfer, but also to broadcast streaming video.

Cooling system

As a rule, microcomputers, and most other devices based on cost-effective processors Intel Bay Trail have a passive cooling system, but in Intel decided to do otherwise. Intel Compute Stick model has developed its active system with a miniature fan and an aluminum radiator closing most electronic components On the motherboard. With a minor loading of the processor and video recorder, the fan remains alone, but even when it does not hear noise. It is difficult to say what will happen in a year of active use, but while it is new, this fan can be called one of the quietest.

Evaluation of the efficiency of the cooling system was carried out in the stress tests of the AIDA64 package. When testing, the device was located on the wall of the monitor indoor with a temperature of about 21 ° C. The processor demonstrated stable workAlthough the maximum frequency is 1.83 GHz - to see and failed. The largest fixed frequency was 1.58 GHz, and the temperature during operation did not exceed 65 ° C. Trehottling when loading all systems was not observed.

Pre-installed by

The microcomputer delivers without any pre-installed branded software, except for drivers and utilities of hardware components. As for the Bing search engine, then, as already mentioned above, the user is still free to choose, which search engine and what online browser it is used, so it is not worth frightening the word Bing in the version of Windows 8.1.

conclusions

On the one hand, Microcomputer Compute Stick sets a new level of performance for similar type devices. On the other hand, the potential of the hardware platform laid in it is not fully implemented in the device. In fact, the level of productivity and the possibilities of the novelty could be even higher, but by economic, obviously, the reasons producer decided to limit the most powerful processor from a very extensive Intel Bay Trail-T family.

Of course, Intel Compute Stick is not alone in his own way, and everyone, if desired, finds with a dozen Chinese analogues on all known trading platforms. But do not make a mistake when choosing! There are microcomputers on various low-performance platforms, and there is an Intel Bay Trail to which the hero of our today's review refers. Despite the modest dimensions, the capabilities of the Intel Compute Stick model are the same as the laptop or desktop of the entry level. Of the disadvantages, except for a repeatedly mentioned processor with limited functionality, it is possible to mark a small volume of the built-in EMMC drive and a completely impractical lacquer coating of the top of the case.

Despite the disadvantages available, the novelty produces a very pleasant impression and makes you think about the future of the PC as a whole, because Intel Compute Stick is a full-fledged Windows PC with a very wide range of use. So, a new product can be successfully used as a home multimedia center and at the same time not to complain about excessive slowness when working. You can purchase it as a PC for presentations and various kinds of exit sessions. Well, for completely undemanding users who need a full-fledged, but not a productive PC, the Intel Compute Stick model can be the main device, which, besides, without any problems can be worn with you in your pocket.

Lenovo IdeaCentre Stick 300, Archos PC Stick, ECS PCOS and others, the cost of which promises to be 20-40% less than that of Intel Compute Stick. At the same time, the hardware component of these microcomputers absolutely repeats the one with which we met today. I should not expect that after entering the Russian market of all the above pocket PCs, the Intel Compute Stick costs will decline to six thousand rubles (exactly so much it is planned to sell Archos PC Stick), but if it decreases at least one and two thousand, it will be quite good .

Experimenting with computing system formats, Intel introduced the COMPUTE STICK ultra-compact platform. A full-fledged PC with a quad-core processor, a wireless network controller, internal memory and Windows 8.1 on board is made in the form of a major key fob. What is it, a bold producer experiment or the birth of a new computing system format? Let's see what to expect from such a PC.

Compact systems similar to dimensions with large flash blades are no longer a big exotic. Similar platforms based on chips with Arm architecture and Android / Chrom OS OS has been presented in the market for some time. But the PC of such a form factor with the X86 processor and the Windows 8.1 operating system we are really visible for the first time. And it is not surprising that such a decision was suggested by Intel, which recently develops the direction of miniature computers in recent times.

The system comes in a neat enough compact box.

The kit proposes an external power supply of 10 W (5V, 2A) with a set of adapters for various standards of electrical sockets, an HDMI extension (20 cm), a short manual of the user and a coupon for a one-year subscription McAfee Antivirus Plus.

Design and layout

So, Intel Compute Stick has dimensions of 103 × 37 × 12 mm. The system is offered as a complete solution. All that is needed to work PC - screen with HDMI and peripherals for control (keyboard / mouse).

The system of the system is made of black plastic. In this case, the top panel has a glossy coating. Of course, in this case, the eye clings for such nuances of the external decor, but exactly the same and fingerprints, which inevitably remain on such a surface. There are no special design sizes. Often, this computer will be hidden from the eye of the owner, because even in the external design of the system, first of all, everything is subordinated to the functionality of the device.

On the top panel, you can immediately select two zones with grilles for the output of heated air, through one of which the miniature fan is viewed. In the central part there is a large and well-readable Intel Inside logo. Closer to the top edge there is an activity indicator that is lightning blue during system operation.

On the left side of "Pack" is a power key, a Micro-USB connector for connecting an external power supply, as well as a full-length USB 2.0 port, which can be used to connect any peripherals.

The right panel is a slot to install cards. micro Memory SD volume up to 128 GB.

From the reverse side of Intel Compute Stick no items. Almost all panel takes a sticker with auxiliary information.

The HDMI connector is located on the bottom panel.

All you need to do to connect Intel Compute Stick - connect it to the corresponding port of the monitor / TV. Due to the features of the body shape, it is obvious that not all devices will allow you to directly connect the PC. In such cases, a complete flexible HDMI extension can be very useful. Unfortunately, the video interface cannot provide COMPUTE STICK power, because the system needs additional external source. For these purposes, 10-watt BP (5V, 2A) with a familiar Micro-USB connector is used. USB cable From BP has a length of 95 cm, therefore it is desirable that there was a free electrical outlet within reach. Theoretically, the system can be theoretically, even from USB connectors located on the TV / monitor, but only if these ports can provide the required power.

Platform

Intel COMPUTE STICK installed the Intel Atom Z3735F processor of the Bay Trail-T family. This is a quad-core model SOC with basic frequency 1.33 GHz, which under load can accelerate to 1.83 GHz.

These chips use Silvermont architecture and are manufactured on the standards of a 22-nanometer process. CPU thermal package is less than 4 W, while SDP is 2.2 watts. In general, this is a typical model used for tablets based on intel Platforms. Slightly more speed versions of this family also apply for available compact laptop models.

The built-in Intel HD Graphics enchantment includes 4 executive blocks, while the GPU frequency may vary within 311-664 MHz.

Intel ATOM Z3735F Memory Controller allows you to use 2 GB in single channel mode (DDR3L-1333). It is this volume of RAM that is established in the Intel Compute Stick modification under consideration. The system is also equipped with an embedded flash drive of the EMMC capacity of 32 GB (Samsung MBG4GC). For work S. wireless networks The Realtek RTL8723BS controller is responsible, which provides a connection for Wi-Fi 802.11bgn (1 × 1, 150 MB / C) and Bluetooth 4.0.

In the Intel Compute Stick modification under consideration, the operating room was initially installed windows system 8.1 C BING, which will be apparent to be painlessly updated to Windows 10 after its announcement. This uses a 32-bit version of the OS, which is quite logical, given the available amount of RAM.

Productivity and nuances of use

Obviously, the performance of the system in this case determines the processor used. In general, we have repeatedly considered PC and tablets based on the Chips of the Intel Bay Trail family. As one of the slogans of the manufacturer used for Compute Stick, "we reduced the dimensions of the system, but not its performance." And it really is. To begin with, some results of synthetic tests.

The results are quite expected. Yes, high-speed indicators do not affect the imagination, especially in terms of graphic features. In this regard, I would very much like to see Compute Stick on the basis of 14-nanometer chips Chery Trail, which became even more economical, slightly more efficiently and received an integrated 8th generation schedule (Gen 8) with 12 computing modules and support for DirectX 11.2. Unfortunately, these SOC introduced only in March, while Inte Compute Stick was announced on the January CES 2015. Surely we will see new processors in the composition of "computing sticks", but the next generation.

The possibilities of the current system are quite enough for a fairly wide circle of tasks. There are no problems in order to open some heavy pages with a complex layout. Although it is also not necessary to know here either. Browsers require an increasing amount of RAM, and if there are only 2 GB of RAM, it is necessary to restrain the appetites. Otherwise, the responsiveness of the system is reduced. COMPUTE STICK confidently copes with office applications. Serious volume projects It is unlikely to appear the idea to process on such a system, but relatively simple documents can be edited quite comfortably.

Gaming abilities Intel Compute Stick is small. The built-in graphical core will provide a comfortable frame rate / c only in simple casual projects. More confidently compact PC looks in the form of a universal media player.

List of video formats for which hardware decoding is supported, rather convincing. With the support of the DXVA, the system easily copes with threads having a bitrate up to 100 MB / c.

When using Intel Compute Stick, it is necessary to easily approach the selection of applications used and the list of tasks that are set in front of the system. Here, in general, the same approaches and principles work as for mobile systems with basic performance. You can try to work with layers in Photoshop or start mounted video, but it's ungrateful. Each task is your tool.

The Intel Compute Stick version is equipped with a 32 GB EMMC drive. In this case, a part of the disk is highlighted for a standby section required to restore the system. Weightful part of the drive initially occupies Windows 8.1 Bing. After the first launch, before updating the operating system and install additional applications, about 19.5 GB of free disk space remains at the disposal of the system owner. As practice shows, such volumes are performed very quickly. The disk subsystem can be expanded by additionally installing the Micro SD flash card up to 128 GB.

As for the performance of the internal drive, its speed indicators are rather expected for EMMC - not very quickly, but quite worn, especially for a disk installed in PC such a compact format.

To connect an additional periphery, Intel Compute Stick offers one full-length USB 2.0 port. On the one hand, it is already perfect that it is in principle there is on the platform of such dimensions, on the other, one USB connector is not enough for many situations. Examples begin with the inability to connect the usual wired mouse and keyboard. Obviously, in this case, it is necessary to take care of a wireless kit in advance. Although, and here is not without nuances. For sets with a radio module, you must connect an external receiver to the system, which actually takes the only USB connector. The peripherals connected via Bluetooth in this case is perhaps preferable. But here it is important not to be done - the most accessible mice / keyboards with Bluetooth often suffer from mediocre responsiveness in the process of work.

Radically, the issue of connecting the periphery here solves a USB-hub on 4-8 additional ports. It is also worth considering that the USB port on Compute Stick offers current strength to 500 mA, that is, the total power of the connected consumers should not exceed 2.5 W. Connect several external hard drives to the hub and the wired periphery will not work. For such a kit, you need an active USB-hub with additional nutrition. Such a device drastically solves the task, but another electrical outlet is required for it, and in general, the platform topology has already changed in such a configuration. Instead of a simple compact solution, we obtain an extensive system with a mass of additional wires, which requires three free outlets to work.

Power consumption, noise and heating

In the rest of the "Kroch" with the wireless kit installed in the USB connector consumes about 3-3.5W. In the absence of load, the cooling system operates in passive mode, and SOC heats up to 45-50c. After some of the activities, when the processor temperature reaches 60 degrees, the fan starts. The speed of its rotation to the famous utilities registered failed. Subjectively felt that the rotational speed changes in a specific range depending on the heating of the processor. During the maximum load on the computing kernel, the CPU temperature rises to 70 degrees.

The noise level published by the fan is low, but in a quiet home environment, if the styc is connected to the working monitor, it is not difficult to hear it. If the system is connected to the TV installed at a distance of 2-3 meters from the user, then the presence of the fan should not be confused. It is fair both for office space. Of course, the ideal option would be to use a passive cooling system, which allowed to remove all the questions with the level of the noise published. But, as you can see, Intel made a bet on an effective heat removal and safe temperature system operation.

Under the load on the CPU and GPU blocks, the power consumption of the system is about 8-9 watts, whereas while viewing HD video consumption of Compute Stick at 5-6 W. This is not 20-30 W which require the NUC class system. The difference is very sensible, but this is what we expected from PC such a compact form factor and an economical hardware platform.

Price

Intel Compute Stick will be presented in two modifications. A version with 2 GB of RAM, a 32 GB drive and Windows 8.1 WITH BING operating system on the US market is already offered for $ 149. The model with Linux Ubuntu 14.04 LTS will cost $ 110, but this version will be equipped with 1 GB of RAM and an internal disk of 8 GB. The price is relatively low, but at the same time it is not an ultra-budget solution. In the emerging segment of computing "sticks", the cost is of great importance. The order of prices is different and $ 20-30 is a significant difference. To the cost of the device, add the amount needed to purchase the mouse kit / keyboard, and if you are going to actively use additional peripherals, then without buying a USB-hub can not do.

Making a choice precisely in the direction of the systems of the "keychain" format, we need sufficiently good arguments and a justified model of using an ultra-compact platform, because a slightly more expensive mini-PCs offer greater functionality.

RESULTS

Intel Compute Stick allows you to turn any TV or a HDMI-out monitor to a full-fledged system suitable for work. With the usual operating system and a set of necessary applications. At the form of solutions like Intel Compute Stick, the progress of computing systems is particularly felt. PC capabilities for which not so long ago was needed a classic system unit, now implemented in a key chain, losing in the pocket of the shirt. Yes, of course, such a "stick" will not fully replace the desktop or laptop and the role of the only computer in the house he definitely does not pretend. However, with relatively low cost, it can turn a large TV to another computer, which copes with everyday tasks and network activities, and also allows you to view video of various formats and slightly entertain yourself with casual games.

Intel Compute Stick is the first iteration of the manufacturer in this segment. The platform is not perfect, at least there is quite certain parametersthat would like to improve. Of course, so much a compact solution has its own nuances of use, but if the spirit of technical adventurism is alive in you, this PC will be very curious even as an object for experiments. At the same time, the simplicity of connection and the initial readiness of the system to work allows not to limit the circle of potential owners of Intel Comppute Stick only enthusiasts.
