Full configuration of the xiaomi mini router. Xiaomi Mi Wi-Fi Mini Wireless Router. Great router for home use

Based on the rapidly growing number of rave reviews on the global web, Xiaomi has been doing great lately, not only in the field of smartphones, but also in routers.

For example, thanks to its powerful hardware dual band router Xiaomi Mi WiFi Mini equipped with a USB port simply leaves no chances for competitors who are unable to release the same functional device for less than $ 30.

Equipment

It is difficult to call it even minimal (it spoils the impression that a cheap patch cord is not included in the components).

The list of items that the buyer will receive out of the box, except for the router itself, is as follows:

  1. Power adapter and socket adapter;
  2. Supporting documentation.

Description

Yes - this is Chinese equipment, but it is not the kind that Russians have gotten used to. This device, in addition to excellent design solution, is equipped with functionality, which usually only top models can boast at a price several times higher than the "baby" we are considering.

The user begins to gain confidence in the device just by holding it in his hands. The quality of the case is excellent, without the slightest hint of element shifts and creaks.

Although the ultra-compact size did not allow the rear panel of the instrument to be equipped with numerous copper ports, for home use everything you need is present here, including a USB connector with the ability to connect external hard disk.

The device also has two standard LANs, one WAN connector and a recessed button for resetting the settings.

Xiaomi specialists have implemented a very convenient solution for folding the external antennas of the router. This allows them to be folded parallel to the body with a simple movement, allowing the wireless device to be safely transported and quickly commissioned.

But often manufacturers make antennas folding across the body or unscrewing, that is, removable.

The device is securely installed on a smooth surface, as it has rubberized feet. Cooling slots are located at the bottom, which prevents dust and dirt from entering the internal hardware components of the device. Above and at the ends, the body of the device is completely covered with practical matte plastic.

The front panel contains nothing superfluous. Here, in addition to the “MI” inscription, only one single LED is installed, which indicates the mode of operation of the router, changing the color of its glow.

The negative aspects include the lack of the ability to mount on a vertical surface. Unfortunately, the manufacturer did not provide special devices for this on the case.

Main characteristics

If you look inside, then here too the user will find a pleasant surprise in the form of very good components, of course, given the indecently low price.

Inside you can see the "MediaTek MT7620A" processor, clocked at 580 MHz. Significant volume random access memory in 128 MB, which ensures the functioning of the device even at high loads without frequent freezes and crashes.

Another pleasant surprise is the ample internal memory of 16 MB, which, if necessary, allows you to safely flash the router with the latest versions. software.

It should be noted that the saturation of radio interference, which is especially relevant in our time, is dual-band WiFi: 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz.

Practice proves that even in large multi-storey buildings, where almost every apartment has its own Internet broadcaster via Wi-Fi, which imposes strong interference, due to which the speed of data transmission and reception often drops. wireless network.

The least negative impact is on the 5 Ghz frequency range, and high speed is especially appreciated when watching videos in HD quality.

Customization

At first, this procedure for the Xiaomi Mi WiFi Mini router seems to be a big problem to all new owners. This is mainly due to the fact that in most cases the software is only in the language of the Great Celestial Empire, as the Chinese like to call their land.

Of course, there are versions with English firmware, but connoisseurs of this popular language should be upset right away that not every menu item is fully translated - and still, even some buttons are indicated only by hieroglyphs.

The only good news is that there is no need to dig into an incomprehensible menu every day, but it is enough to enter the parameters once and continue to use it calmly, completely forgetting about the problem.

The guide below with screenshots will help you easily cope with the task even for novice users. Using step-by-step methods, you can successfully put into operation not only the model in question, but also "Mi WiFi Nano" and "WiFi MiRouter 3".

So far, there is only one way to Russify an unfriendly Chinese configurator - this is to install a new firmware from third party developer eg "PandoraBox, Padavan".

But this flashing of the device is not very easy to do, since there are many different nuances. Therefore, it is recommended to use native software. Having completed the configuration once according to the instructions, then the owners of the Xiaomi routers intuitively understand all the few menu items of the web interface.

Device connection procedure

Obviously, before setting up, the device must be correctly connected to a computer or other device. Experienced users have probably already done this, in which case, you can simply skip this paragraph of the instructions and go straight to the study of direct work with the web interface of the equipment.

It should be noted that the manufacturer has also taken care of the large army of smartphone owners who do not have a PC or laptop by releasing special software available in app stores for Android and Apple mobile devices.

This program is called "Mi Router" and it is fully translated into English. The technique for using this utility is described at the end of this manual.

In order to connect, you need to perform the following steps:

Setting options

After connecting, enter the control panel. For this purpose, it is convenient to use a PC or laptop, which are connected to the device via a patch cord or wirelessly.

If the owner of the router has a special wire cable connection is preferable because it is more reliable and free from external interference.

The only pity is that Xiaomi does not include a patch cord with the device, and users have to buy it separately.

The turned on device immediately starts broadcasting the Wi-Fi network after a short boot. It is not difficult to recognize it, since the name contains the word "Xiaomi".

Due to the fact that the network is initially completely open, and the access code has not yet been set on it, you can easily connect to it from a computer or laptop (the main thing is that the PCs are equipped with WiFi adapters, since they may not be available on outdated models) ... For "ancient" computers the best option is the connection of an external USB wifi adapter.

If you immediately managed to connect to WiFi, then it is advisable to log into the web interface from a Windows PC using an Internet browser capable of translating foreign languages well, for example, through Chrome.

Despite the fact that not all 100% of the hieroglyphs will be translated, but for the Russian-speaking user, the device settings menu will become more understandable than if it remains completely Chinese.

To configure the Internet, you will need to perform the following steps:

a) distribution of the Internet;

b) repeater mode.

Note: at this stage it is already allowed to try to enter the world wide web. Very often, such an attempt is successful. At the same time, when all gadgets connected to Wi-Fi already have access to the Internet, then you can congratulate the owner new network and say that the setup procedure is completely over. The rest of the users will have to study and follow this instruction.

How do I connect to a provider?

To do this, you need to do the following steps:

Entering the parameters of the Wi-Fi network

If you need to change the code for the wifa or its name, as well as if it is necessary to deactivate one of the ranges, you will need to perform the following steps:

How to enter parameters via a mobile device?

Download and install "Mi Router" into your tablet or smartphone. The utility is available for download both through the router's web configurator and through the popular app stores. mobile platform(Google Play and App Store).

Users who do not want to clog the memory of their gadget with an additional program can configure the device using an Internet browser (instructions for configuring the router through a browser are described earlier in this manual).

People who have chosen the option using a special mobile utility will need to take the following steps:

Despite the lack of a Russified interface, the setup process is not more complicated than routers from other manufacturers.

Having completed the procedure once on their own, then an experienced user usually already intuitively understands the purpose of all sections. In them, if necessary, you can upgrade the software of the router, enable and disable "VPN" services, use the capabilities of interactive television "iptv", etc.

Working with external USB drives

The first releases of "Xiaomi Mi WiFi mini" could only be read by USB media with the "FAT32" system. At present, the device is functioning perfectly and "ExFAT". After connecting to the USB connector, the program will first notify you of the need to prepare the device for operation, which completes in about five minutes.

The next time you connect the same flash drive or external hard disk they will be ready to go straight away.

Conclusion

With impressive technical performance and powerful external antennas, this router has absolutely no competitors in its price niche. And given the reliability and stability of work, even a possible increase in cost will not be able to change the situation for competitors for the better.

Great router for home use

If you are looking for a router that combines attractive design and compactness, then you should pay attention to the Xiaomi WiFi Mini. The device will surely fit into your interior. An excellent combination of price / quality makes the router an excellent option for home use. At the same time, Xiaomi WiFi Mini is not inferior to other, more expensive devices in terms of functionality and quality, having similar characteristics.

Xiaomi Mi Mini specifications

The router supports two possible frequency ranges:
2.4 GHz (while data can be transmitted at speeds up to 300 megabits per second);
5 GHz (at speeds up to 867 megabits per second). The undoubted advantage of Xiaomi WiFi Mini is its support for 2 bands. On this moment 2.4 GHz is the most common band with which the lion's share of such devices work. Despite this, the popularity of the 5 GHz band is growing, with a greater throughput... With this trend, the user, buying more modern gadgets, is deprived of the need to buy a new router.

The Xiaomi WiFi Mini router offers the following functionality:

  • Connecting external memory devices - HDD, memory cards, etc. - across USB port, which makes it possible to organize network storage, where they can also store backups data. Working with various external devices is possible thanks to the built-in commercial Tuxera driver, which supports all versions of the file NTFS systems;
  • Special software with the ability to configure the router, remotely control the device and view statistical information. The software can be run from any device, be it a tablet, smartphone, etc.
  • 128 megabytes of RAM, which allows data to be transferred at a faster rate when multiple devices are connected. This amount of memory also has a positive effect on the speed and reboot speed of the router.

User data protected

The device manufacturer has also paid due attention to the security of user data. In this regard, the following mechanisms have been implemented:

  • Event notifications when third-party and suspicious persons connect to Wi-Fi;
  • Aggregation of information about sites that are dangerous from the point of view of phishing and fraud, and their inclusion in the black list.

We continue our acquaintance with Xiaomi devices. For a while, my main router will be Xiaomi Mi Mini WiFi Router, and since we recently carefully studied its younger brother, it makes sense not only to look, but also to compare the two models a little.

Appearance and kit of the Xiaomi Mi Mini router

I bought a Xiaomi Mini router in a store we already checked. As always, the box is made in a minimalist style of thick beige cardboard. The model itself has several colors, I took the corporate white color.

On the lining under the router there is a QR code for downloading the “Mi Router” application, with which it will be possible to control the router remotely via the Internet.

Just like in the Nano model, the Mi WiFi Mini comes with only a power adapter with a cable for an American outlet (here it is non-removable) and instructions.

The plug is also different - round, familiar to routers. It's strange that a black cord with an adapter is put on the white model Let me remind you that in the Nano it is white with a plug micro usb, so that you can, in principle, be powered from any mobile charging.

In size, Mi Mini is one and a half times larger and heavier.

Outwardly, they look like copies of each other, but in fact there are differences:

  • Mini operates in 2 bands - 2.4 and 5 GHz, while the younger version only operates at 2.4 GHz. Therefore, the speed of the Mini is up to 300 Mbit / s on one and up to 867 Mbit / s on the other.
  • The Mini's processor is MT7620A 580MHz; for Nano - MTK 7628N, 580MHz
  • The youngest has 64 MB of RAM, the older one - 128 MB
  • Mi WiFi Mini has USB support flash cards
  • Nano has cheaper versions of Switch and SDR, and also lacks HW_NAT
  • Also used another wireless module and replaced UPHY with USB2 and EPHY.

The differences end there. Despite the fact that both have two antennas, this does not affect the signal strength in any way, since if one has both antennas used for WiFi distribution at 2.4 GHz, then the Mi Mini has one responsible for 2.4, the other for. Therefore, the distance they cover is about the same, while it is regulated in the admin panel. I used the "Standard" mode, and it was enough for exactly two adjacent rooms with a light partition - when working within one small apartment, this is not noticeable.

Going further - on the back panel, in addition to the same type of two LANs and one WAN port s at 100 Mbit / s in Mini is also available for connecting flash drives (FAT32) to distribute files from them via local network... The Reset button is also placed here - in the Nano it is hidden in the radiator grill on the bottom.

Here, on the lower part of the case, there are only rubberized feet, a radiator and a sticker with technical characteristics and data for accessing the admin panel.

Xiaomi Mi Mini WiFi Router Settings

I will not describe in detail how to configure it - everything here is identical with Nano. Upon entering, we will see a branded menu in Chinese, which can be translated by one of the browser translation plugins.

Router Xiaomi Mi Mini in repeater mode

Everything else is identical to the other model we have already reviewed, but let's look at another mode of operation, in which both Mi Router Mini and Nano work - as a WiFi repeater. At the same time, he will be able to continue to distribute the Internet to those PCs in the local network that are connected to him with an Ethernet cable. The switch is in the Internet Settings section.

There are two more options available here - a repeater and a second access point.

After connecting, information about the SSID of the network and the IP address assigned to the repeater from the head access point will appear - it is on this that the control panel of the Xiaomi router will now be available.

On the main page, there will again remain information about the loading of the router's hardware. In the "Settings" section, you can change the SSID of the network that comes from Xiaomi Mini - by default they are taken from the head router.

The function of changing the password for administration, updating the firmware and resetting the settings to factory defaults is also available - the rest do not work in the repeater mode.

Xiaomi Mini Speed Tests

Equipment used:

  • WiFi adapter TP-LINK Archer T4U (speed up to 300Mbps at 2.4GHz, USB 3.0)
  • ASUS NX1101 Gigabit Network Card
  • Two PCs with Windows 7 64x
  • AIDA32 Network Benchmark

Specially bought a Xiaomi mini WiFi router to prepare several detailed instructions on setting up this interesting router. By the way, judging by the reviews and comments in online stores, the Xiaomi router is very popular. And this is not even strange, for a small amount we get a beautiful, powerful and high-quality router. In addition, the router is dual-band, of course, with support for the 802.11ac standard, and even with a USB port. Yes, this is a Chinese router, but Xiaomi is good company, and very popular.

The router itself from Xiaomi is very beautiful, stylish and unusual. I will review this router in a separate article. And in this article, I want to describe in detail the process of first setting up a Xiaomi mini WiFi router. I will show you how to connect a router, configure Wi-Fi network, and the internet. In the near future I will prepare instructions for setting up general access to files on USB stick, router firmware, etc.

Control panel in Chinese. What to do, how to change the language?

As for setting up Xiaomi mini WiFi, this is most likely the only point that can disappoint you in this router. The fact is that the settings of the router are in Chinese. There is no way to choose Russian, or even English. If you want the control panel to be in Russian, you will have to flash the router third party firmware(PandoraBox, Padavan). The firmware process itself is complex. Perhaps I will write about this in a separate article.

English can be added. You need to change the region to Europe in the Wi-Fi settings, and update the firmware. I will also write about this in a separate article. Well, I advise you not to bother, and just set up the Xiaomi mini router according to my instructions. Does anything change if the settings are in English? This is a router, you configure it, and forget about this control panel. And everything is exactly in what language it is. The main thing is that the Internet works well and stably.

One more point, the router can be configured from a smartphone or tablet through the Mi Router application. The application is in English, everything is clear there. We will also consider this option at the end of this article.

This instruction should be suitable not only for the Xiaomi mini model, but also for WiFi MiRouter 3, and Mi WiFi Nano.

Xiaomi Mi Router Mini: setting up Wi-Fi and the Internet

First, connect the power to the router, and connect the cable from the provider or modem to the "Internet" port.

Next, we need to go to the settings of the Xiaomi router. First, we will look at the first setup from a computer (laptop). You can connect your computer to the router like a cable (however, there is no cable included) and via Wi-Fi. Immediately after turning on, a wireless network with the name "Xiaomi_some numbers" will appear. It is not password protected. We connect to it.

If you have the Internet right through your router, then it makes sense to configure it through the Chrome browser, or Yandex Browser. They know how to translate pages on the fly. And the control panel will be more intuitive. The translation there is not perfect, but still better than the Chinese characters.

1 Open any browser, and go to the address miwifi.com (it is indicated at the bottom of the router)... Or 192.168.31.1 ... You can see the detailed article in which I showed. On the first page, just click on the big Chinese button 🙂 This is something like a license agreement.

2 Next, you need to set the name of the Wi-Fi network and the password to it. The password must be at least 8 characters long. Since the router is dual-band, the password will be the same for networks on two frequencies. It can then be changed in the control panel. We continue with the configuration.

3 In the next window, we need to set a password that will protect the settings of the router. This password will need to be specified when entering the router settings. Enter the password and click on the button to continue. If you want the password from the router to be the same as the password from Wi-Fi, then you can just check the box. But I don't recommend doing that.

4 We see a message that the router will create two Wi-Fi networks at different frequencies, their names will be indicated there. The router will reboot.

After rebooting, a Wi-Fi network will appear with the name that we specified during the setup process. Connect to this network using set password.

5 In the settings window, if you have not closed it yet, you can click on the button and you will see a message prompting you to install a proprietary application on your smartphone to control the Xiaomi router. You can install this application in the App Store, or Google Play if you need it. It is called Mi Router. Below I will show you how to set up a router from your phone using this application.

An important point! If the Internet via the router is already working on your devices, then the configuration of the Xiaomi router is completed. If you want, you can go to its settings, I'll show you how to do it below.

If the Internet through the router does not work, then you need to configure it.

Entering the settings of the Xiaomi router and setting up the connection to the provider

1 Again in the browser go to the address miwifi.com... A password prompt will appear. Enter the password that you set during the first setup. This is not a password from Wi-Fi, but from a router.

2 To configure the Internet (connection to the provider) go in settings to a separate page as shown below. Select your connection type from the list. Most likely you need to select PPPoE. It's just that if you had a DHCP (Dynamic IP) connection type, then the Internet through a router would work without configuration. You can check the type of connection with your provider.

3 After selecting PPPoE, you will need to set required parameters to connect. These parameters are provided by the Internet provider. Also, they are most likely indicated in the documents that were given to you when you connected to the Internet.

4 If the provider uses MAC address binding, then you can change it on the same page, below. Just write down the required MAC. Or ask the provider to register the MAC address of your router, which is indicated in this field, or on the case of the device itself.

You need the router to connect to the Internet and start distributing it to your devices.

Configuring a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless network. Change Wi-Fi password

If you want to change the name of the Wi-Fi network, password, channel, or, for example, disable the network at some frequency of 5 GHz, or 2.4 GHz, then go to the settings and go to the page as shown below.

If you scroll down the page below, then you will see the 5G Wi-Fi settings there, as far as I understand the guest network settings and the region change.

As you can see, nothing complicated. Even though the settings are in Chinese.

The first setup of a Xiaomi router from a phone or tablet (Mi Router)

You can also configure the router from a mobile device. First you need to install the proprietary Mi Router program on your phone. We install it from Google Play, or the App Store. If you do not want to install the application, then you can configure it through the browser of the mobile device, as I showed above.

Connect your smartphone to the Xiaomi router. The Wi-Fi network will have a standard name and will not be password protected. Also, do not forget to connect the Internet to the router.

On my iPhone, right after connecting, a window appeared with the settings for the router. And on Android, in the Mi Router program, you need to select the "Set up a new router" item. We indicate the place where the router is installed and click the "Next" button.

The router will check the Internet connection, and if your ISP uses a DHCP connection, you will see a message that the Internet is connected. Like mine in the screenshot below. And if you have PPPoE connection technology, then you will need to set some parameters (login, password).

The last step is to set a password for the Wi-Fi network, and change the name of the network. Provide this information and click the "Finish" button.

Please note that the password set on the Wi-Fi network will also be used to access the router settings when entering the control panel at miwifi.com.

That's it, the router setup is complete. If something did not work out, then go to the settings through the browser and change the necessary parameters.

Even without the firmware of the router in English, or Russian, it can be configured without any problems, and everything will work. Yes, in the settings, which are very difficult to understand in Chinese. Even in English it would be easier. There is an English version of the original firmware, in a separate article I will show you how to install it.

I really liked the router, both externally and stable work. Write your feedback on this model, share tips, and ask questions. I am always glad to help with advice!

I'll start with a little background. Trademark Xiaomi today is still little known for a large number of smart device users. Some users recognize Xiaomi by smartphones, even a smaller part of users knows that the brand, in addition to smartphones, produces several dozen other devices. One way or another, due to the pricing policy, many potential buyers regard Xiaomi as "cheap China", preferring products from well-known brands, for example, the same Samsung.

My first acquaintance with smartphones began with Chinese iPhone copies 3, which at that time were characterized by simply the most terrible quality, both the devices themselves (and components) and the software.

The Chinese copy of the iPhone was followed by Nokia 6120 and Nokia 6303i, the latter unit became for me the standard of quality and reliability. Over time, the capabilities of the old phones became insufficient, so I got acquainted with the JiaYu G3, which lived with me for more than a year, a little later the G3 was replaced by G2s of more compact dimensions, with a metal chassis and a decent camera for those standards. The last copy lived with me for more than 2 years, after which I presented it to my brother-in-law. Exactly the same G2s has been used by my wife for over two years.

On G2s, I got acquainted with the proprietary MIUI shell, precisely the software thanks to which many learned about Xiaomi.

At one time, Jobs himself said: "We have always been shameless about stealing great ideas" - we were never ashamed to steal great ideas. Xiaomi has skillfully copied Apple's ideas and over time has developed its own recognizable corporate identity.

Xiaomi Redmi 2 Enchanced Edition was the first Xiaomi product to favor which my cup of advantages tipped. And I would still use this smartphone today if it were not for ... damn attractive prices for Xiaomi Mi4 and Mi4c. My wife has been using the single-SIM Mi4 for a year, and I have been using the dual-SIM Mi4c as much.

What can I say about Xiaomi products? For me, this is an excellent balance of price, quality and capabilities, but, perhaps, the main thing is the proprietary MIUI shell, since there are plenty of localized firmwares now (miui.su, xiaomi.eu).

Previously, the products of this company could only be ordered directly from China from the same Aliexpress. Several years ago, xiaomi.ua opened in Ukraine - the first unofficial reseller with its own service center and, moreover, registering all dialers in the UDCR.

It was there that both Redmi 2 and Mi4c were bought. With Mi4, the story came out very funny. Once I talked with the managers of the "ALLO" network on the subject smartphones Xiaomi, to which the consultant managers inform them that they do not work with dubious Chinese brands. A few months later, I bought Mi4 on the ALLO website, but the seller was an intermediary who was bringing the smartphone from Poland.

Well, yes, a really "dubious" brand, which in a couple of years has become one of the leaders of the Chinese smartphone market (sarcasm). After another half a year, ALLO becomes the official reseller of Xiaomi and brings this brand to the same level with Apple and Samsung on the main page of the online store.

Xiaomi is an unrecognizable brand for the reason that the management does not spend large resources in active advertising, hoping for word of mouth. This is undoubtedly pleasing to us, the end customers, because we do not overpay for smartphones as much as Apple owners do.

Over the past few years, Xiaomi has strengthened its position in international markets, in particular Russia and Ukraine. Day after day, the company is taking away "candy" from major brands, increasing its presence in the market.

At the moment, I can name more than 20 of my friends who have successful experience with Xiaomi smartphones.

Mi smartphones use a single account and cloud service, similar to the one implemented by Apple, and most importantly, all the company's products are closely related to each other.

The assortment of the company is dominated by “ smart devices"(Smart devices), implementing the principle of" Internet of things ". Here you can find a complete smart House including smart air conditioners, water and air filters, smart scales, fitness and GPS trackers, security system, power and lighting control. The company even has a smart Washer, smart rice cooker, smart kettle and robot vacuum cleaner.

What do all these devices have in common? All of them need to exchange information with the owner's smartphone. In some cases, Bluetooth is responsible for communication, in all others - a wireless Wi-Fi network.

This is how Mi WiFi home routers appeared in the company's lineup.

Naturally, as soon as I had the opportunity, I decided to immediately beg for a couple of devices from one of my partners. In this case, the equipment was kindly provided for the review by the Ntools.com.ua online store, for which I express my deep gratitude to him!

As part of the review, I would like to introduce you to the two most popular router models - Xiaomi Mi WiFi Mini and Mi WiFi Router 3 International. The second model, as you might guess from the name, is the international version, so it comes from the factory with English firmware and a power adapter compatible with European outlets.

Here is the first and most important remark, due to which I decided to review only now. Mi WiFi routers have been imported to Ukraine for several years, initially they all came from web interfaces in completely Chinese. Previously, you could use the built-in translation capabilities in Google chrome, or the device had to be flashed to alternative firmware.

Actually, most experienced users sit on alternative firmware providing higher functionality of devices.

We will talk about using devices on official firmware with an English-language interface.

Externally, Mi WiFi Router 3 and Mi WiFi Mini are noticeably different from each other. But how different are they in terms of performance and functionality?

Mi WiFi Router Mini: Dual-Band with the Best Price / Performance Ratio?

I'll make a reservation right away, on the network you can find different names for this model: MiWiFi mini, Mi-router mini, Xiaomi Mini Wifi Router - all this is one device.

At the same time, do not confuse Mi WiFi Mini and Mi WiFi Nano, visually they are similar in design, at the same time the Nani version, as the name suggests, is very compact in size. Mi WiFi Nano is equipped with a micro-USB port that is used to supply power. If necessary, this model can work up to 30 hours from PowerBank at 10000 mAh.

The main differences from the older models are the absence of USB, 64 MB of RAM, the MT7628N processor (580 MHz), there is no support for 5 GHz networks. As you already understood, Mi WiFi Nano only works with 2.4 GHz networks.

For owners of Xiaomi devices, of particular interest are the older models of Mi WiFi Router 2 with built-in 1 or 6 TB storage. Thus, you can implement your own cloud on your home network.

Within the framework of this review, the youngest and oldest models will not be considered, if they are of interest to you - write in the comments, if necessary, I will write a separate review on them.

So, the scope of delivery of Mi WiFi Mini. For those who do not buy Xiaomi products for the first time, there will be nothing new. Almost all of the company's devices intended for the domestic market are delivered in a dense cardboard box with a minimum amount of printing. This type of packaging provides good protection from damage during the international transport of orders from online stores. Moreover, this is part of corporate identity Xiaomi.

The layout is very tight, inside only the most necessary things - a router, short instruction and adapter. Compact dimensions packaging is recognized to simplify logistics and save shipping costs.

The usual patchcord, as in ordinary home routers, is simply not there.

The “Mi” logo is printed on the front of the package.

On the back there is a sticker with brief description content in Chinese.

In our case, Mi WiFi Mini was brought into the country by an intermediary company that took care of the localization of the packaging.

Remember I said earlier that a company doesn't spend a lot on advertising? On the example of packaging, this is most noticeable. In the end, you buy a device, not a colorful colorful packaging, the contents are important, not a candy wrapper, right?

The basic package is not rich, and the adapter itself is designed for use with Chinese sockets. Our reseller has tried and prudently put a quality adapter into the box. Usually, when ordering from Chinese online stores, simple adapters can be added to the kit.

The adapter is proprietary for 12 W (12V / 1A), Xiaomi either manufactures them itself, or they are made to order by the company. Based on feedback on Xiaomi products, its adapters differ quite good quality even against the background of famous brands.

The set of interfaces is rather modest: one WAN, USB port and ... only 2 LAN ports. Consider this fact when purchasing a device. All three ports are 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet.

Why are there only 2 LAN ports? There is too little space to provide sufficient spacing between individual ports (caps are different, after all). If you need more ports, buy a switch, or pay attention to another model.

For me personally, 2 ports are enough: 1 PC by cable, the rest by air. Chinese in terms of mentality and use high tech different from us, so the two ports should not be surprised.

Status indicators (activity) are paired with ports, at night from the other end of the room nothing will interfere with sleep. If necessary, the LED can be turned off altogether in the settings.

Antennas are located on either side of the device. When folded, they form a single unit with the device. There is only one degree of freedom - you can only deflect the antennas in one plane, forward or backward. The deflection angle is approximately 180 degrees, then a limiter is triggered to protect the cable from kinking.

Almost the entire lower part is perforated for natural ventilation. Two rubber feet are anti-slip and provide a secure fit on almost any surface.

When viewed from the side, the back of the device is raised and shaped like a cylinder. The design is pleasing and strongly reminiscent of the Apple Wireless Keyboard.

Despite its small size, Mi Mini is quite weighty. The fact is that a large area in the lower part is occupied by a metal plate, which is connected to the chip using a thermal interface.

Specifications

This kid is based on the MT7620A chip produced by MediaTek. First, MTK is full of alternative firmwares. Secondly, this processor model is not bad, as for the device of this price segment, a combination of characteristics.

The chip has only one core, clocked at 580 MHz. Among the interesting features is the hardware Offload (HW NAT v2), which allows pumping 900 Mbit IPoE / PPPoE / IPv6 on models with a similar chip.

A similar processor is used in Zyxel's routers - Keenetic III, Viva and Extra. According to Zyxel, this processor model is capable of pumping up to 500 Mbps L2TP / PPTP and up to 1800 Mbps in duplex for IPoE / PPPoE.

In order to evaluate the performance of this chip, just take a look at the test results of the router. Keenetic Extra with gigabit ports:

Xiaomi has 100 Mbps ports, so the real speed in our case is limited to 94-95 Mbps in each direction.

V Xiaomi firmware there is support for L2TP and PPTP, but there are no optimizations as such, which is why the router pumps 50-60 Mbps on the standard firmware when connected via VPN. Again, the device was originally intended for the domestic Chinese market, where L2TP and PPTP have long been outcasts.

There shouldn't be any special problems, because more and more providers are connecting to the network using the Plug-n-Play principle without the need VPN settings... For example, the largest provider is Home Internet from Kyivstar.

The amount of RAM is 128 MB, with basic use cases you can hardly use more than 40%, so the reserve for the future and the use of advanced functions is pretty good.

Permanent Flash memory of 16 MB is the standard for devices in this price segment.

The 2.4 GHz wireless module is built directly into the processor and supports the standards 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n in a MIMO 2x2 configuration.

To support the 5 GHz band, the MT7612E chip is connected to the processor via the PCIe bus - everything is according to the recommendations of MediaTek. MT7612E supports 802.11a, 802.11n and 802.11ac standards in 2x2 MIMO configuration (20/40/80 MHz channel width).

Many people call Mi WiFi Mini an AC1200 class router. Thanks to the simultaneous operation of two radio modules (Dual-Band), the device is capable of providing a channel capacity of 300 + 867 Mbps.

I almost forgot that there is no support for MU-MIMO, however, as in other devices in this segment.

In the control panel, you can select 2 operating modes: Dual-Band On and Dual-Band Off. The only difference between these modes is that when the above option is enabled, both wireless networks will have the same name, due to which the client device will independently select the range based on the presets set in advance.

What are the disadvantages of the device?

Firstly, the design of Mi WiFi Mini does not provide for absolutely no other installation option, except for the desktop one.

Secondly, when using the stock firmware using USB 3G / 4G / LTE modems are not possible, as is the connection of a network printer. There is also no IPTV support. There are no problems with this on alternative firmware.

The last drawback is the English interface. For many, the lack of Russian (Ukrainian) localization can be a rather serious factor.

Mi WiFi Router 3: Mi WiFi Mini on steroids?

I got my hands on Mi WiFi Router 3 International, it differs from the usual version in that the kit comes with an adapter with a Euro plug and the firmware from the factory immediately comes with an English interface.

I will make a reservation right away, do not confuse this model with the Mi WiFi Router 3C version! The extra letter in the name hides big differences: the MT7628N processor, only 64 MB of RAM and the lack of 5 GHz support. Be very careful when making a purchase, an attempt to save money may turn out for you not at all what you expected.

In terms of packaging, Mi WiFi Router 3 inherits the best traditions of Ubiquiti and Zyxel: the box combines white color and unobtrusive printing.

Compared to Mi WiFi Mini, the package is unchanged, the patch cord is still not included in the package.

The design of Mi WiFi Router 3 is slightly futuristic and simple at the same time.

Personally, I have a comment on the weight, the device is too light, which creates a feeling of fragility, although the plastic itself does not bend and is very pleasant to the touch. Instead of a metal plate, an aluminum radiator is used to cool the processor, which explains the low weight of the router. In addition, the device lacks rubber feet, which, combined with its low weight, is not very good.

The heating of the device itself is below average, so there is no special need for a large radiator.

In terms of interfaces, Mi WiFi Router 3 is absolutely no different from its smaller brother. However, there is nothing surprising, as far as the hardware platform is concerned, these 2 routers are almost identical.

In favor of the older model, the 8 times increased amount of permanent memory (128 MB), as well as separate antennas for each MIMO channel, which actually explains the presence of 4 antennas.

Each wireless module uses its own independent antennas, which improves the quality of the wireless network. The antennas themselves are characterized by a high gain, in comparison with their predecessor 5 and 6 dBi for 2.4 and 5 GHz, respectively.

Mi WiFi Amplifier: Wi-Fi Amplifier?

A problem with almost all routers is poor coverage when used in large rooms with thick walls. In order to expand the range of coverage of a wireless network, you can resort to a wide variety of options, from installing an additional access point connected by cable to using repeaters.

Xiaomi offers to expand the network using the Mi WiFi Amplifier device. In the case of a Xiaomi product, practically no knowledge is required from the user, especially if it is necessary to expand the network of the Mi WiFi router.

Mi setup process WiFi Amplifier so simple that even a child can handle it. Just set up the main router, then connect Mi Amplifier to the USB of the router and wait until the indicator on the adapter turns blue.

The delivery set is not just modest, but very modest, almost like an OEM product. In an effort to lower the final cost, the developer ditched the box in favor of a zip-lock bag. Fortunately, the package contains a short instruction and a QR code for downloading the application.

You will need to purchase a USB power adapter separately, or look for a free port for installation. As with the Mi Mini, the antenna can only be bent in one plane.

Partly technical parameters everything is also modest - SISO configuration with support for 802.11n (and old B / G) standards.

In the best case, the channel speed will be 150 Mbit, if not for one thing. How does a repeater work? It allocates half of its bandwidth for communication with the primary access point.

Ideally, using one 40 MHz wide 802.11n channel, you can get 90-95 Mbps. Now divide that number by 2.

There are several practice tests on the net with limits of 40-50 Mbps for this device. I managed to get only 20-25 Mbit in real-life conditions. I didn't see any sense in placing the adapter closer to the router, because in this situation it is already possible to connect to the router itself.

And, of course, do not forget about the noisy air. The 2.4 GHz band in many floors during peak hours is loaded by 50-85%, which will further reduce the real speed.

On the other hand, if we take into account the cost of the device, there are no complaints, as for the price of 7-10 USD. it has a right to life. The area of real application is a large area where the router is not able to provide coverage, for the implementation of basic capabilities of access to the Internet (reading news, social networks, checking mail, sensors, etc.)

We will talk about the web interface, the Mi Router mobile application, and the router's capabilities in the second part of this review.

Online course on networking

I recommend Dmitry Skoromnov's course "". The course is not tied to the equipment of any manufacturer. It provides fundamental knowledge that everyone should have. system administrator... Unfortunately, many administrators, even with 5 years of experience, often do not have even half of this knowledge. I know simple language many different topics are described. For example: OSI model, encapsulation, collision domains and broadcast domains, loopback, QoS, VPN, NAT, DNS, Wi-Fi and many more topics.

Separately, I will note the topic on IP-addressing. It describes in simple language how to make translations from decimal to binary and vice versa, calculation by IP address and mask: network address, broadcast address, number of network hosts, subnetting and other topics related to IP addressing.

The course has two versions: paid and free.
