Simplified automatic setup

Before configuring the router, make sure that an external Internet cable is connected to it in the blue socket on the back side, and the router itself is connected to the network using an adapter (the corresponding indicator light on the front side is activated). To configure Keenetic Extra, you need to connect to the router using a patch cord, or via wireless network Wi-Fi.

There are two ways to configure the router - automatic and manual. The first one allows you to activate all the basic functions in a minimal amount of steps, however, this technique does not allow you to configure some of the device's functions (3G / 4G modem, complex signal transmission encryption, DLNA, and so on).

Easy setup

To get the settings automatically, you need to select the parameters of your Internet access - country of residence, provider name, technical settings + connection login and password (PPPoE method is usually used as a connection method, all important information must be in the agreement with the provider). After that, the router will be configured automatically.

You also need to accept or refuse to activate the Yandex-DNS function (if this parameter is activated, the router will automatically filter illegal information and content "for adults"; without activation, traffic will not be filtered).

At the end of the configuration, the console will most likely ask you to come up with a new username and password to gain access to the router - it is recommended to do this, since the standard admin / admin can be easily hacked.

Manual setting

You can also manually configure your router. This method is preferable because it allows you to activate a number of important functions that simplify the work with the Internet (whereas with automatic configuration, only basic access is activated).

Manual tuning is recommended after automatic start Internet (if you want to independently configure even an external connection, then after gaining access to the settings console, select the "Web configurator" button instead of "Quick setup").

PPPoE Cable Connection

DLNA

DLNA is a special technology for connecting a flash drive or USB drive to a router, which can be accessed by all devices connected to the router (computers, DLNA-compatible TVs, etc.). Before activating DLNA, write down any files on the USB flash drive, and then insert it into the USB connector on the back of the router. After that, configure the DLNA function on your router:

In the console, press the button in the form of a window, which is divided into 4 compartments (the most on the right);
Select the DLNA tab;
Check the box next to "Enable";

3G / 4G Internet

You can connect to the Internet not only via an Ethernet cable, but also using a 3G / 4G modem. To do this, you need to insert the modem into the USB connector on the back of the router and wait a couple of seconds for automatic synchronization to occur.

No additional settings you do not need to do it, although you can check the modem connection activity as follows - in the console, click the icon in the form of a graph of functions, select the 3G / 4G tab and read technical information about the connection.

Launching and configuring a BitTorrent client

The router also allows you to launch a BitTorrent client that will download files and save them to a USB drive connected to the device. Please note that BitTorrent is completely standalone, so it will work even when your computer is turned off.

The client is configured as follows:

Make sure you have connected a USB storage device to the router and activated it using the DLNA function;
Go to the device console, click the window-shaped button (far right) and open the "BitTorrent Client" tab;
Check the box next to the "Enable" item;
In the line "Directory" make sure that the path to your flash drive is indicated (or click the button in the form of three dots and specify the path to the connected USB drive). At the end, click the "Apply" button;
Now you need to configure your BitTorrent client. To do this, open a browser and enter the value 192.168.1.1:8090 in the address bar - an auxiliary window for working with torrents will open in front of you. To add a new torrent, click the button in the form of a folder with files with an upward arrow, click Browse, select the torrent file, click OK and wait for the download to complete.

Home group

For convenience, you can combine several of your computers into home group to optimize communication with each other and the network:

Open the console and press the button in the form of two monitors;
Open the "Devices" tab - here you can specify the entire list of computers that you want to combine into a group. For example, to add a new device, click the corresponding button and select all devices in the list that opens;

Using the "DHCP relay" tab, you can arrange some of the IP parameters that are needed to connect devices to external sites;

If you use multiple devices to access the Internet at the same time, then you may get an IP address conflict, which will significantly slow down your Internet access. To get rid of this drawback, open the NAT tab and activate the function of the same name, which standardizes IP for all connected devices.

Firmware upgrade

Please note that when updating the firmware, the user settings are in most cases "reset" to the factory settings. In other words, you will have to reconfigure your router. Therefore, it is better to install the new firmware version immediately after performing the automatic initial setup, when the device has not yet been configured.

What let down is the antennas, you could put 5 dBi instead of 3 dBi, this would provide a larger coverage area of the wireless network, but an even greater disadvantage is that they are not removable and if you want to replace them with more powerful ones, it will not work. But do not lament, the coverage area is no less than that of his fellows. I would also like to see two USB connectors on this model, since the USB port has great capabilities, but the company decided that if you want multiple connectors, buy more expensive router models. This router can be hung on the wall, for this, holes are provided at its bottom, but to put it sideways, the design does not provide.

Create and enter a password to connect to the web interface. Setting up 4G Internet.

Go to the web interface of the router and look at the firmware version in the main menu.

After that, go to the official Zyxel website and select the "Support" tab to see which version is the latest. If the firmware version installed on your router is outdated, download a new one.

Unzip the downloaded archive. On the web interface of the router, go to the "System" menu, select the "Files" tab and click on the "firmware" item. In the window that appears, specify the path to new firmware and click "Save".

Setting up a wireless Wi-Fi network on Zyxel Keenetic Extra.

By default, Wi-Fi on the router is configured. If you turn it over, then on the sticker you will see the name of the networks (I recall two of them, since the router operates in two modes 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) and the password to them.

For those who do not like the network name or want to change the password, you need to connect to the web interface, select the "Wi-Fi network" menu and specify the network name and password in the "2.4 GHz access point" submenu. Next, go to the "5 GHz Access Point" tab and follow the same procedure, with the only exception, we recommend adding "5G" (without quotation marks) to the name of the Wi-Fi network to distinguish 2.4 from 5 GHz networks.

Configuring the BitTorrent client.

The Zixel Kinetic Extra Internet Center has the ability to download torrent files without the participation of a computer or laptop. To do this, connect an external USB drive (USB flash drive or external HDD) into the USB socket, go to the web interface of the router, select "Applications" from the menu, go to the "BitTorrent Client" tab. Check the box next to "Enable", in the Directory for storing files field, click on the ellipsis icon and specify in which directory you will save the files. Then click the "Apply" button.

Now it remains to add torrent files. To do this, click the "Manage downloads" button or on new page browser enter 192.168.1.1:8090. You will see a window with which you can add torrents, delete, monitor their download. Click on the "Open torrent" button (folder with an up arrow), specify the path to the downloaded torrent file and click "OK".

After a few seconds, the file will start downloading.

I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the download takes place even when the computer is turned off. Only the router and USB media are involved in the download.

DLNA setup on the router.

On the web interface, select the "Applications" menu, the "DLNA Server" tab. Check the box next to "Enable", then click on the ellipsis in the "Directory for media files" field, select the folder (or the entire USB drive) to which you want to give DLNA access. If you have any suspicions that someone is connecting to your router, you can always see what devices are connected to it. To do this, on the web interface, select the " home network"and on the" Devices "tab, look at all the devices connected to your router.

In my opinion, Zyxel router Keenetic Extra is very good network device which will suit most users. Zyxel Keenetic Extra 2 copes with this task perfectly, giving out the full speed of my tariff plan.

57 Megabits / s for downloading and 94 Megabits / s for uploading.
