Error 651 occurred while connecting the modem. If the problem persists. How to fix this problem

The PC is connected to the Internet using the PPPoE protocol. Almost every provider uses this protocol as the main one. That is why error 651 occurs quite often when connecting to the Internet on Windows 10. To fix this problem, you can contact the support service of your operator or use some methods.

Causes of Error 651 on Windows 10 PC

Failure to connect Windows 10 to the network with error 651 may occur due to:

  • Connections to another network (if performed via Wi-Fi);
  • Malfunction of the PPPoE client RASPPPOE;
  • Blocking firewall or antivirus connections;
  • Availability of the second network card;
  • Damage, missing and incorrect work network card drivers;
  • Damage to the network cable (not connected);
  • A technical problem on the part of the provider.

Also, connection error 651 may occur due to a malfunction of the router itself. Therefore, you need to check its settings.

Ways to solve error 651 on Windows 10 computer

There are several ways to fix error 651. However, before using them in practice, it is worth rebooting the PC and router, checking if the cable is connected, and reinstalling the network card drivers. If these standard manipulations do not help to return the connection, proceed to the following steps.

Method number 1. Disabling system protection

If you get error 651 on your PC, it is worth turning off your firewall and antivirus. After disabling the defenders, it is worth rebooting the system and checking the network connection. Sometimes an antivirus or firewall is blocking the PC's access to the network, causing error 651.

Method number 2. Disconnecting the second network card

Some users use two network cards at the same time. If you have the same situation, we recommend disabling one of them. To do this, just go to the "Device Manager", select the second network card and right-click on it. Next, select "Disable". Or we just turn it off physically.

After we reboot the system. If the problem persists, the second NIC can be turned back on.

Method number 3. Create a high-speed PPPoE connection

To create a new high-speed PPPoE connection on a Windows 10 computer, do the following:

  • We press "Win + R" and enter "rasphone.exe".

  • A new window will open. We choose "High-speed" connection.

  • Next, the wizard for creating a new connection will start. We follow the instructions. Upon completion of the operation, restart the computer.

Method number 4. Resetting TCP / IP settings

You can delete and create a high speed connection, however, alternatively, you can reset the TCP / IP settings. This operation is much faster than creating PPPoE. To do this, you should do the following:

  • Launch command line with Administrator rights. Enter "netsh winsock reset".
  • Next, enter the following command "netsh int ip reset c: \ resetlog.txt".

  • We reboot the computer. The parameter will be corrected, since the settings have been reset.

Method number 5. Changing the parameters in the router settings

Most routers establish a PPPoE connection to the ISP. It is set automatically. However, if you encounter this error on your Windows 10 PC, it's worth checking your router settings. To do this, do the following:

  • Open your browser and enter 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.
  • Enter your username and password. This is often "admin".
  • In the menu on the left, select "Network", then "WAN" and indicate the type of PPPoE connection.

  • We save the settings and restart the PC.

Method number 6. Editing the registry

This method does not work for everyone. Windows assemblies 10, however, it deserves attention.

  • We press "Win + R" and enter "regedit".

  • Find the section HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ Tcpip \ Parameters. Right-click on an empty space and select "Create DWORD Parameter (32-bit)". Give the parameter the name "EnableRSS" and the value "0".
  • Create one more parameter with the name "DisableTaskOffload", but with the value "1".

After that, you need to restart your computer and check the network connection.

How to solve it this problem see in the video:

In the century modern technologies the Internet plays a vital role for humanity, but very often there are breakdowns and errors that block people's access to the World Wide Web. So, for example, when working with Windows 7/8, one of the most common when connecting is error 651. Of more early versions operating systems from Microsoft, it is known under other numerical values: 678 (XP) and 815 (Vista). Next, we will talk about how to fix error 651 when connecting to the Internet in various ways.

Connection failed with error 651

Error 651 appears most often when starting a PPPoE connection in Windows 7 and 8. It is important to understand that such failures are very often not fixed by reinstall Windows, because they are caused by a malfunction / error that occurred on the equipment that provides access to the network. Moreover, we are not always talking about the user's devices, because problems may arise on the part of the provider. Let's consider the main reasons due to which error 651 may occur, how to fix them and other nuances.

RASPPPOE client crash

Windows services periodically do not work correctly, as a result of which error 651 may appear when connecting to the Internet, which is eliminated by the usual re-creation of the access point.

All this is done as follows:

  1. Open the "Control Center" directly from the desktop.
  2. We turn to the section with a list of connections available on the PC to delete the one we need.
  3. We select the connection we do not need and delete it. The screenshot shows a point created automatically when connecting to a network through a router, but when directly inserting an Internet cable into a PC and manual creation connections, the "Delete" item will be active.
  4. Go back to the previous section to re-create the connection.
  5. We carry out further actions, as shown in the screenshots.

We choose a high-speed PPPoE connection, because it is for it that error 651 occurs when connecting.

After entering the necessary items, you can use the new connection, but if the Internet is still blocked by error 651, then you should go to the next way to fix it.

Docking two network cards on one PC

Often, the user does not even suspect that two network adapters are installed on his PC and both are functioning. If both of them are connected to the Internet, then the occurrence of a malfunction is guaranteed. It is enough to disconnect the cable from the one that should not be used and everything will work.

Also, everything can be solved programmatically by removing / disconnecting the connection that is unnecessary. Above has already been described a way to remove an unnecessary connection. Using the same algorithm, you should click delete / disconnect on the connection that is redundant. However, first you need to determine which one, and then the method of pulling out the cable is much easier, because in this case you can cope with the usual brute force. If the card is alone or its disconnection did not help, then proceed further.

Blocking by antivirus software or firewall

Antiviruses and firewalls can be the same software that blocks access to the Internet and causes error 651. You can fix the latter by simply checking the indicated fact, disabling all possible blockers. If there really was a problem with them, then you need to familiarize yourself with the setting of this software in more detail or contact a specialist adjuster.

Router problems

Today various routers and ADSL modems can act as a router. Both types of equipment must be configured for correct connection to the Internet. It should be understood right away that all settings / configurations are stored in the memory of these devices, and not on a PC. If the router / modem was purchased after many years of using a standard connection via a cable directly plugged into the network card, then use more standard way Internet access is no longer needed. The old connection can be deleted using the algorithm mentioned above, and the new one will appear on its own and will be activated automatically when the router and PC are started. This connection was discussed in the description of the first method of eliminating the failure with the removal of the access point.

There may also be a mismatch technical characteristics router and those requirements that are necessary for correct operation in combination with the provider's equipment. The wisest thing to do to buy the right router is to go to a technician who can also do the setup.

The problem is in the work of the provider

If none of the proposed methods worked, then you need to leave an appropriate request for repairmen from the company that provides the user with Internet access. Usually, some of the ways to fix errors will be offered by the manager, who accepts the application, but if the problem cannot be corrected over the phone, the wizard will check on the spot. According to the standard, the equipment outside the client's home is first checked, and only then the adjuster inspects the PC itself, the router and other elements used when connecting to the Internet.

Error 651 in Windows 2003

Separately, it is worth pointing out a way to fix error 651 in the version of Windows 2003, where it occurs due to the fact that the PPTP protocol is specified for the connection, which, of course, does not correspond to the required PPPoE. To fix the error, you should make some changes to system registry... You can enter it by pressing the "WIN" + "R" keys and entering the "regedit" command in the window that appears.

  1. Create a parameter of type "DWORD" in it with the name "EnableRSS" and value "0".
  2. By analogy, create the "DisableTaskOffload" parameter and assign the value "1".

If the parameters exist, then it is enough to change their value to the one indicated above. At the end, we reboot the PC and check the operability of the Internet. If the error is not eliminated, then everything, again, comes down to calling the service technician.

From the above, it is worth remembering that reinstalling the OS is an extreme. It is necessary to try all kinds of ways software customization, through which you can eliminate the errors that have arisen, because the Internet error 651 is eliminated in the same way in most cases. We wish you success in fixing the problems that have arisen!

Connection error 651 in Windows 7 is displayed on the screen in the form of a small window.

The WAN port has its own miniport for each protocol. Connecting via WAN miniport PPPoE fails, then this message appears:

Error 651 when connecting to the Internet in Windows 10 looks a little different, but there is no fundamental difference. The same goes for Windows 8.

Error code 651 means that a network failure via PPPoE protocol. The information is given: "The modem or other communication device reported an error." In English: "Error 651: The modem (or other connecting devices) has reported an error". Thus, the system signals to the user: "I can not connect to the Internet."

Let's consider how to fix the problem that has arisen.

Error 651 when connecting to the Internet of Rostelecom, Beeline, TTK, MTS, Dom.ru and other providers occurs if the PPPoE protocol is used. The causes of error 651 are different:

  • Damage to the cable or equipment;
  • Failure of settings;
  • Defects at the provider;
  • Viruses and antiviruses.

If problems are detected on the PC, the first thing to do is turn off the computer and the router for one minute. Before resuming work, it is necessary to withstand this time so that the residual voltage goes away from the router. If it does not help, look for possible malfunctions step by step.

Physical damage

The error is caused by damage to equipment, namely:

  • Violation of the network card;
  • Router failure;
  • Damage to communication cables;
  • Malfunctioning connectors;

You need to start the test with the patch cords and connectors. Visually inspect them, if there is no damage, make a tight connection without distortions. There is a chance that error 651 will be resolved.

Malfunctions of the network card and minor malfunctions in the operation of devices cannot be determined independently. You have to be a specialist here. But trying to find other reasons for the error may be successful.

RASPPPOE client crash

In Windows, the PPPoE protocol is responsible for system file raspppoe.sys located in the directory C: \ Windows \ System32 \ Drivers... There is a possibility of damage to this file. Verify:

  • A copy of the file on another computer or laptop. If this is not possible, download from the Internet;
  • Save the old file in a temporary directory, replace it with a copy;
  • If error 651 hasn't gone away, put the native file back in place and continue troubleshooting.

The presence of a second network card

If there are two cards and both are involved, this causes a connection conflict, leading to a connection failure with error 651. Disconnecting the cable from the second connection will do nothing. It is necessary to disconnect the second connection, for this:

  • In the menu that opens, select "Network and Sharing Center";

  • Select the highlighted menu item;

  • A list of created connections appears;
  • Click on the desired one with the right mouse button;
  • In the pop-up context menu, select the first item;

If it does not help, disable and enable again the connection that caused the error. If you're unlucky again, look for other reasons, but don't touch the second connection yet.

Failed router or modem settings

When working through a router or ADSL modem, try connecting to them through another computer or through an alternative network card. If this is not possible, or all connections give an error, check the device settings. Any modem and router: TP-link, ASUS, Zyxel and others have a built-in WEB interface, with which you can access the settings. For this:

  • In the address bar of your browser, type 192.168.1.1. An authorization window should appear. If it doesn't pop up, turn the device over. On the bottom panel there is a sticker with the requisites required to enter the WEB-interface. Or find the details in the manual for the device;

  • Enter the found login and password into the authorization window;
  • In the opened window of the WEB-interface find the "Internet" or "WAN" tab;
  • Verify the connection data with the details received from the provider;
  • Correct the erroneous values and reboot the device.

For ADSL modems, attention should be paid to the VPI and VCI parameters, incorrect values of which can cause error 651 when connecting to the Internet. The modem may also not receive a signal over telephone line... It is necessary to check the LED indicators on the device: they are on.

Checking antivirus and firewall

We need to check the system for viruses. To do this, update the anti-virus databases and run full check... If there are no viruses, it is possible that the antivirus itself or the firewall is causing the connection to fail with an error. Disable them temporarily.

If error 651 does not appear, contact the developers of the antivirus and find out the reasons, as well as a way to fix the problem without disconnecting. Developers should help configure the firewall as well, as these are interconnected programs.

Replacing values in the registry for server operating systems

Manipulating the registry solves the issue for servers, but may help fix the error for non-server Windows systems as well. If your router or modem reports an error, you should try to work with the registry:

  • Run the regedit command by entering it in the search bar;
  • Expand the catalog by clicking the "plus signs" and sequentially selecting;

  • Call the context menu by clicking on the right in an empty space. Create DWORD (32-bit) value twice. First - DisableTaskOffload with a value of 1, then - EnableRSS with a value of 0.

  • To restart a computer. If this does not help, continue your search.

Problems with the provider

If the connection is via a router or modem and it is possible to connect to the network via Wi-Fi, try to connect from a tablet or smartphone. If everything went well, continue looking for the error in the computer. Otherwise, call your provider.

When your network connection is "naughty", there are four more common techniques that can help:

Updating the network card driver

Check the driver of the network card. To do this, enter the device manager through the control panel. Find network adapter... When a yellow mark is found opposite it in the form exclamation mark you need to reinstall the driver.

If this action does not help, try to search the Internet latest version drivers for the network card. It is possible that the deprecated one does not work correctly, especially when, when updating Windows systems significant changes were made to it, "conflicting" with the old driver.

Create a new high-speed connection

Deleting and re-creating the connection can correct possible errors. To do this:

  • Right click on the network icon and select;

  • Display the list of connections by clicking on the highlighted menu item;

  • Remove connection with error. To do this, right-click on it and select the appropriate item in the context menu that appears.

Hello friends! Are you getting error 651 while connecting to the internet and don't know how to fix it? In this article I will tell you in detail what I know about it and how I fix it. By the way, my name is Zhenya, and with any questions you can contact this article in the comments. Ask all questions there or in the (contacts) section. Well, let's get started?

Just recently, a friend of mine called me and asked me to fix this error, I still did not know how to do it, but after climbing the Internet, I found the same answer and am sharing it with you.

Error 651 when connecting internet

Let's take a look at several options to fix this problem. But first watch the video, it also has an answer.

  1. You can call your ISP right from the start and report this error. It may be that it was they who created this error 651 when connecting to the Internet and they will fix it as soon as possible. But as we all know, most of the operators there themselves do not know anything, and all they can advise is to restart the computer and see what happens. But this option does not suit us, right?
  2. If the operator did not help you, then you can simply delete your Internet connection and recreate it. Think you know how to do this? If not, write about it in the comments, and I will answer you by mail.
  3. Sometimes I was helped by such an option as reinstalling the drivers for the network card.
  4. If you have an ADSL router or wi-fi installed in your house, then I advise you to read the article, but this is after you fix error 651.
  5. You can also restore the checkpoint, that is, roll back operating system a week or a couple of days ago. I am sure you know how to do this.
  6. Well, let's move on to the most realistic solution to this error, so repeat after me. Click on the start button> run> and enter the regedit command there after that we will need to dig a little in the registry, do not be afraid, this is not scary. This is how I will write now, and go to the registry branches HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ Tcpip \ Parameters as soon as you reach the last branch of the (Parameters) section, create a DWORD parameter there and point to the EnableRSS name, also do not forget to specify the value ( 0-zero). OK! Let's go further, now we need to create another DisableTaskOffload parameter with the value (1-one). And after all these operations have been completed, you can safely restart your computer and everything will work.

I really hope that article error 651 when connecting to the Internet helped you. Well, as I said earlier, you can ask any questions that you still have in the comments, and I will definitely answer you!
