General characteristics

A type

Determining the type of device (phone or smartphone?) Is quite simple. If you need a simple and inexpensive device for calls and SMS, it is recommended to opt for a telephone. A smartphone is more expensive, but it offers a wide variety of options: games, videos, the Internet, thousands of programs for all occasions. However, its battery life is significantly shorter than that of a simple phone.

Add "mini" in case Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini should be taken very conditionally, since the smartphone uses a "miniature" 4.3-inch display, dimensions are 124.6 x 61.3 x 8.9 mm, and weighs only 107 grams. In any case, the new S4 Mini looks really tiny compared to the big one. In this article, we will evaluate the similarities and differences, as well as how miniaturization affected the quality and convenience of working with a smartphone.

As for the price, the miniaturization did not affect as tangibly as we would like: the "dwarf" will cost 18 thousand rubles in Russia (400 euros in Europe), although for a "full" S4 you will have to pay from 20.8 thousand rubles. Does it make sense to save a few thousand on a Mini? We will talk about this in our review.

Appearance, design, hardware

Our testing lab received a black version of the S4 Mini with 8GB memory - there is also a white version. Variants with other body colors, as well as with a large amount of integrated memory, do not yet exist. The smartphone comes in a box with wood-like finish, under the S4 inscription there is a small addition Mini - inside, in addition to the smartphone, a battery is attached, in-ear headphones (with pads different sizes), charger and cable. The black smartphone comes with white accessories, as Samsung has been practicing for some time.

The smartphone itself, as we mentioned above, has dimensions of 12.5 x 6.1 x 0.9 cm and weighs 107 grams. The 4.3-inch display has a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels. Although the screen cannot be called miniature, it is still much smaller than the "older" model with a diagonal of 4.99 "and Full-HD resolution... The two smartphones share a common feature: the SuperAMOLED display, although the "older" model received the addition of "HD".

What changed? Both smartphones support LTE Hexaband (meaning the "older" model GT-I9505). There is also support for Bluetooth 4.0, micro-USB 2.0 with MHL, WiFi standards 802.11 a / b / g / n, micro-SD slot, IR transmitter and aGPS / GLONASS. A modern operating room is installed on the smartphone Android system 4.2.2. This is where the similarities end, the rest Hardware is at a pretty decent level.

For a complete list of features, see the last page of the overview.

The fast Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor in the S4 gave way to the Snapdragon 400 (2x1.7 GHz), so the GPU was also slightly weakened: it now uses the Adreno 305 instead of the Adreno 320. The memory has also been reduced by 512 MB to 1536 MB, as for the cameras. then you get two at 8 and 1.9 megapixels (for the "older" smartphone: 13 / 2.1 megapixels). Also, the "junior" smartphone has lost a number of sensors (thermometer, barometer, hygrometer), which provided a rich range of functions in the new S4. However, the usefulness of sensors in everyday work scenarios very much depends on the preferences of the smartphone user. Interestingly, Samsung has established relatively powerful battery at 1900 mAh in a compact device, so let's hope for a long battery life.

But the S4 Mini has other advantages. The polycarbonate body is pleasant to the touch, looks good, and overall the quality of the smartphone's workmanship can be called very good. Externally, the Mini model is very similar to the "older" S4, the smartphone seems familiar. All buttons are located in their usual places: the power button is located on the right side in the upper third, on the opposite side there is a volume rocker. The front panel contains the physical Home button, which has become a little smaller, from the bottom you can see the micro-USB port and microphone. Another microphone is located next to the IR transmitter and a 3.5mm audio jack on the top.

S4 design Mini simple and elegant - many users will surely like it. Moreover, Samsung has decided not to make sharp moves, relying on familiar shapes and colors. In general, the smartphone seems to be quite typical for a Korean manufacturer, but this can hardly be considered a drawback.

Ergonomics / at work

As befits a compact smartphone, its ergonomics should be up to the mark. Small body more convenient to use, isn't it? Not so simple. The screen with a diagonal of 4.3 "compared to 4.99" in the S4 is smaller, but the body still remains relatively large. In terms of dimensions, the new S4 Mini has become a little thicker than the S4 (8.9 mm versus 7.9 mm), but about a centimeter narrower and shorter. But the display is still noticeably smaller, on the front panel it uses 71.5% against 65.2% of the available area. However, many more users will be able to work with compact smartphone with one hand, a slightly greater thickness is unlikely to hinder this. Overall, the S4 Mini seems to be quite comfortable and pleasant to work with.

In terms of weight, the novelty Samsung showed its best side: it is only 107 grams, which leads to a density of 1.57 g / cm³ - the smartphone turned out to be one of the most "airy" devices among those who visited our test laboratory, only smartphones can compete with it - tablets. The smartphone is lightweight, for some it may seem even too "toy". But, in the end, this is already a matter of taste, so decide for yourself.

Great model

Advantages of the phone An excellent phone for the money. I took it for 13,500 - the color titanium, I have never seen anything like this from anyone else. Powerful Wi-Fi module, good sound and screen. Great connection where it really is. I have MTS, after last update operating system, or maybe just a coincidence - but automatically in some places it began to catch 4G, it catches perfectly on the Arbat. I did not check the speed, but it loads almost like from Wai-Fai. A powerful enough processor ... but here's what I noticed in the car - when music is played through bluetooth from the phone, when a home or work wi-fi is found, it starts to slow down and stutter. I don't know how people have a battery that lasts for three days - I have enough for a daylight ... but bluetooth and wi-fi do not turn off at all, twice a day - for an hour, or even 1.5, Yandex traffic jams and a navigator work in the car. I talk a lot too. The phone heats up, of course, but not more than others. After half an hour of conversation, the ear does not burn, but it is felt that it is warm.
The iPhone is certainly more status-conscious, but there are no dances with tambourines like i-tunes. This is important for me, because I can just connect my phone to my computer via a lanyard and download everything that interests me. Again, the price - well, I'm not ready to pay for a dialer, albeit with the bells and whistles of 30,000. And this one - fits perfectly in the hand, quite productive and most importantly - inexpensive. Another plus is that you can expand the phone's memory up to 64 Gig using a memory card. The seller insisted on buying a film for a long time - he did not buy it, and I do not regret it, though I have a cover. After 4 months of use, the phone is like new - there is not a single scratch on the glass - I don't use the cover at work - it lies on the table, often with the screen down ... I will not advise everyone, but take it to anyone you like, it will not disappoint. Disadvantages of the phone: The camera is rubbish, the maximum is 4-5 megapixels, but not 8. The daughter has an iPhone 4S - she shoots much better. Another drawback that pisses me off the most is that there is no auto-rotate in the gallery of photos ... although in all other applications, auto-rotate is present. Wi-Fi periodically falls off, but surprisingly, sometimes I glorify home Wi-Fi as much as a km from home.

A comment about the phone:

And yet I put 5 stars, because the phone is still not a camera, but if you write 8mGp, then it would be nice to finish the camera up to these parameters. (this is Samsung). For my needs - five points, I do not regret at all that I bought it. If I didn't count the money, I would most likely take 5S, but 4S is worse for me personally ... although my daughter likes it. Sometimes he climbs in my opinion - he says that the phone is not bad at all, but hers is better. So - how many people, so many opinions.
If you have problems with your head connection, set the GSM mode only in the network settings, the problems will be solved all at once. I have been using it for almost a year, until I was never disappointed that I chose it.

Review # 2 on the phone Samsung Galaxy S4 mini GT-I9195

Good model

Phone experience: several months

The advantages of the phone are small size, removable battery, sufficient performance, display (black is really black), design (if it does not cause rejection "remnant"), there is NFC and LTE, a bright flashlight, a mechanical button (can be configured to receive calls ), front camera 1.9 (not VGA), 1.5G RAM Disadvantages of the phone: the price is too high; sometimes (rarely) it turns itself off, although the battery has not sat down (possibly due to flaws in the standard power-saving mode, I did not notice this without it); no OTG, no MHL, but there is an infrared port; the percentage is weaker than in S3 (according to Antutu, although the overall score is higher there), in the "gift" from Samsung, many applications turned out to be paid

A comment about the phone:

Dedicated to those who choose "not a shovel")
chose a smartphone for a long time, read a lot of reviews and reviews. The main criterion was a compact size with at least an average filling and a screen of at least 4 "", LTE and, if possible, a removable battery (well, Android). Considered mainly leading brands. It turned out that the choice is small, either a "shovel", or completely budgetary cut-down brake models. In the end, the choice arose between SONY SP, SONY Z1C and the subject. Z1C did not take because of the price and many jambs (see reviews and w3bsit3-dns.com forum) + VERY quiet call sound, SP did not take due to complaints about software glitches and a non-removable battery.
I took this 9195 Black Edition, on the whole I'm satisfied.
The smallest of the competitors.
The performance is quite enough (in Antutu - 20300 points), I don't play games, but I put Asphalt8 for the sake of interest - it goes without brakes on medium.
The screen is good, but gluttonous (and qHD resolution is somehow not enough).
Convenient full-time task manager with a widget.
A little annoying is the second delay before the first opening of "contacts" or "phone" (iPhone 4s for Antutu is half as weak, but works smoother). If the application is already "hanging" in memory, the latency is less. Android 4.2.2 allows you to move apps to SD card.
The main camera with autofocus is not bad for a mobile phone.
A special "thank you" to Samsung for the mech. Button, with which you can receive a call without looking at the screen (drivers will understand). An interesting mode is "driving", in which the name of the subscriber is read out during an incoming call. The battery lasts for a couple of days if you turn on the data transfer as needed, and not constantly.
Would this device cost "top ten" - everything would be OK. And with a price tag of 15tr for an average filling device, as they wrote in one review, "the manufacturer could provide real leather and metal, and not their imitation"
I did not take "gray" phones, having read reviews about reassembled used devices.
Advice - do not turn on "anti-theft" in the gift Kaspersky - I was tortured to remove and clean it later, the touch began to glitch, I had to do a full reset (everything was OK)

Detailed testing of the most advanced of all modifications of the Galaxy S mini line

The popular Korean manufacturer of mobile devices, Samsung, recently updated (more precisely, slightly "refreshed") the line of its top flagship devices Galaxy S, adding several additional color options to the already present colors of the cases of their smartphones, which made the series itself brighter, and the buyer's choice - richer. Among this variety, a special line called Black Edition stands out - it is the update of its top-end devices in black that the Korean company is now advertising in the media with special zeal. This special Black Edition currently includes two smartphones: the top-end Galaxy S4 and its mini version, the Galaxy S4 mini. The smartphones of this line really have several differences from their originals, although they are only cosmetic and insignificant. We decided to review the updated mini-version, the full name of which is Samsung Galaxy S4 mini Black Edition, although at one time we already studied the original product called Samsung Galaxy S4 mini.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 mini Black Edition model, which we are reviewing today, differs from its original not only with a leather-like back cover: this device has support for fourth-generation networks, that is, we are talking about more noticeable changes. In this regard, our Galaxy S4 mini Black Edition even had a different model number - GT-I9195. In principle, the original version also had a modification under this number, but at that time we were able to test only the simplest modification under the nomenclature number GT-I9190, that is, without support for LTE networks. In addition, that model was tested on old versions of benchmarks, and many of the current benchmarks were not used by us at that time. So, in any case, it will be interesting to find out what results the mini-flagship of the Korean company produces according to the most modern version of our testing methodology. Moreover, for Lately Several smartphones from other manufacturers, which are very similar in most parameters, have visited our test laboratory (first of all, it concerns the dimensions, screen sizes and hardware platforms of the same level), so it will be interesting to compare the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini Black Edition model with them.

Contents of delivery

The Black Edition series of smartphones also differ in packaging. Unlike brown cardboard, from which boxes of all modern top smartphones Samsung "black" series is packed in black boxes. Matte dark cardboard has a minimal amount of information on its outer surfaces, which makes the packaging look quite stylish.

Inside the box is a modest set of accessories, complete with an insert that allows you to take part in a draw for a trip to the Brazilian soccer championship. The rest of the package is familiar: a charger (output current 1 A), a USB connecting cable, a stereo headset with a round wire and gel ear pads, as well as several paper books neatly tied with a ribbon.

Appearance and usability

Outwardly, the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini Black Edition smartphone does not differ much, but still noticeably: instead of a plastic glossy back cover here, according to the new fashion of Samsung, the cover is made of pseudo-leather. This, as is the case with all the other devices of the company, is not real leather, but molded plastic. It looked stylish enough before the release of the Samsung Galaxy S5, but now it seems like the new dot-textured "leather" applied in the S5 looks preferable.

The rest of the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini Black Edition case has not changed: the same glass-covered front protective panel with an extended hardware button, the same bezel around the perimeter, which looks like metal, but is actually painted plastic.

The smartphone is small in size, and due to its low weight and non-slip back surface, it is quite comfortable to hold in the hand, and it will not bulge out of the shirt pocket too much.

Due to the surface of the back cover, imitating leather, there are practically no fingerprints on it, so only the glossy side bezel and the front protective glass.

The cover of the smartphone is removable, it is traditionally fastened with several plastic latches and can be easily removed - there is a barely noticeable ledge for engaging with a fingernail.

The battery compartment and slots for cards (SIM-cards and memory cards) are hidden under the cover, but you can get to them only by disconnecting the battery. The SIM card is used here in Micro-SIM format, memory cards (microSD) are supported up to 64 GB.

On the back panel you can see the camera window, which is square here and framed by a chrome bezel, below is the peephole of a single LED flash.

The loudspeaker grille is cut in the back cover plastic and slightly lifts the device lying on the table due to the twig curved outward.

The earpiece grille is a nice chrome plate cut right into the protective glass of the screen. Next to it are the eyes of the front camera and touch sensors.

The central hardware button is mechanical, while the other two are traditionally implemented in the form of sensors, backlit in bright white.

Two more mechanical keys are installed on the side edges on both sides of the case: on the right is the power button, on the left is the volume rocker.

The side buttons are metal, very conveniently located, have a soft stroke and a distinct pressure - in this regard, the products of the Korean company are one of the best on the market.

Above, near the audio output for headphones (3.5 mm), you can find a small eye of the infrared transmitter, which serves to control various techniques as a remote control. Corresponding proprietary software called Smart Remote moves from model to model - of course, it is also available here. The functionality of the Smart Remote program is at its best: it is not only able to connect a smartphone using an infrared port with any equipment, but also can act as an interactive program guide.

The universal Micro-USB connector is traditionally located at the bottom end - unfortunately, the mode of connecting external devices is not supported here, so you won't be able to connect a flash drive using an OTG adapter.

It is curious that despite the unambiguous name of the Black Edition line, two color modifications of this model are indicated on the company's website in the description. According to tradition, they were given romantic names: "White frost" and "Black fog" - however, not a single photo of the modification in the color "White frost" has yet been found.

Screen

The Samsung Galaxy S4 mini Black Edition smartphone is equipped with a Super AMOLED sensor matrix. The display has a large margin of brightness, the screen remains readable in the bright sun. The physical dimensions of the display are 53 × 95 mm, the diagonal is 4.3 inches. The screen resolution in dots is 960 × 540 (qHD), the density of dots per inch reaches 256 ppi.

The brightness of the display has both manual and automatic adjustment, the latter is based on the operation of the light sensor. The smartphone also has a proximity sensor that locks the screen when you bring the smartphone to your ear. Multi-touch technology allows you to handle 8 simultaneous touches. The bezels around the screen are quite thin here - the distance from the edge of the case to the edge of the screen from the sides is just over 4.5 mm.

Alexey Kudryavtsev, editor of the "Monitors" and "Projectors and TV" sections, carried out a detailed examination using measuring instruments. Here is his expert opinion on the screen of the test sample.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the brightness of the reflected objects, there is a very effective antiglare filter, surpassing the Google Nexus 7 (2013) (hereinafter simply the Nexus 7) screen filter in terms of reducing the reflection brightness. For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the turned off screens (on the left - Nexus 7, on the right - Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini, then they can be distinguished by their size):

Due to the slight difference in the color tone of the reflection and the presence of frames, it is difficult to visually assess the difference in the brightness of the reflection, however, statistics from the graphics editor show that the screen of the S4 Mini is indeed slightly darker (brightness from photos 96) than that of the Nexus 7 (brightness one hundred). The doubling of reflected objects is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (very effective, even better than that of the Google Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed much easier, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

When the white field was displayed in full screen and with manual brightness control, its maximum value was 300 cd / m², the minimum was 12 cd / m². Despite the not the highest brightness value, even in bright daylight, the smartphone can be used, since an effective anti-glare filter helps out. You also need to take into account the fact that in this case the smaller the white area on the screen, the lighter it is, that is, the actual maximum brightness of the white areas will almost always be higher than the specified value. For example, when displaying white on half of the screen, the maximum brightness when manually adjusted increases to 325 cd / m². The low brightness mode allows you to use your smartphone without any problems even in complete darkness. Automatic brightness control works according to the light sensor (it is located to the right of the front speaker). You can make adjustments to the operation of this function by moving the setting slider from before +5 units. Further, for three conditions, we give the screen brightness values for three values of this setting - for −5 , 0 and +5 ... In complete darkness in automatic mode, the brightness decreases to 12, 22 and 32 cd / m², respectively (normal), in an office illuminated with artificial light (about 400 lux), the brightness is set to 85, 145 and 230 cd / m² (just right), in a brightly lit environment (corresponds to bright daylight outdoors, but no direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or slightly more) increases to 300 cd / m² for all three correction values, which is the maximum for manual adjustment and which, in principle, should be sufficient to ensure readability in the sun. That is this function works absolutely adequately. When the brightness is lowered, modulation appears with a frequency of 240 Hz. The figure below shows the dependence of brightness (vertical axis) on time (horizontal axis) for three values of brightness adjustment:

It can be seen that at maximum brightness, modulation is practically absent (the amplitude is insufficient for visual discernibility of flicker), but at medium and low brightness, the relative amplitude of modulation is high, therefore, image flickering can be seen in the test for the presence of a stroboscopic effect or simply with fast eye movement. Depending on individual sensitivity, this flickering can cause increased fatigue.

This smartphone uses a Super AMOLED matrix - an active matrix based on organic light-emitting diodes. A full-color image is created using subpixels of three colors - red, green and blue in equal numbers, which is confirmed by a fragment of a micrograph:

(For comparison, you can see the gallery of photomicrographs of screens used in mobile technology.)

The screen has excellent viewing angles. True, when deflected at relatively large angles, white acquires a slight blue-green tint, but black remains just black at all angles (although reflection from bright objects has a bluish halo, more elongated horizontally, which is why black areas in the light can slightly lighten and acquire a "metallic" tint). The black color is so black here that the contrast parameter is simply not applicable in this case. When viewed from a perpendicular view, the uniformity of the white field is excellent. For comparison, here are some photos showing the same images on the screens of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini and the second participant in the comparison, with the brightness of the screens set to about 200 cd / m². White field perpendicular to screens:

Excellent uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field can be noted. And the test picture (in the Standard(or Standard)):

The color reproduction is clearly not bad, but despite the conventionality of the forced color balance in the camera, set at 6500 K, it can be seen that the colors of the S4 Mini are clearly “colder” and have too high saturation. Now at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen. White box:

The brightness at an angle on both screens has noticeably decreased (to avoid severe darkening, the shutter speed is doubled in comparison with the previous two photos), but in the case of Samsung, the drop in brightness is much less pronounced. And the test picture:

It can be seen that the colors have not changed much on both screens, but the brightness of the Samsung S4 Mini is noticeably higher at an angle.

Switching the state of the matrix elements is performed almost instantly, but at the on (and less often off) front there may be a step (or two) 16.7 ms wide (corresponds to a screen refresh rate of 60 Hz). For example, this is how the brightness (vertical axis) depends on time when switching from black to white and vice versa:

In some conditions, the presence of such a step can lead to trails trailing behind moving objects, but in normal use these artifacts are almost impossible to see. Quite the opposite - dynamic scenes in films on OLED screens are distinguished by high definition and even some "jerky" movements.

The ability to adjust the color rendition is implemented on the page with a choice of profiles, one of which implies some kind of automatic adjustment (profile Adapt Display). In case one of the three fixed profiles is selected, except for the profile Dynamic, built on 32 points with equal intervals according to the numerical value of the shade of gray, the gamma curve did not reveal any blockage either in the highlights or in the shadows, and the exponent of the approximating power function is 2.26, which is slightly higher than the standard value of 2.2, while the real the gamma curve practically does not deviate from the power-law dependence:

For profile Dynamic The gamma curve has a slightly S-shaped character, which increases the visible contrast of the image. Recall that in the case of OLED screens, the brightness of image fragments dynamically changes in accordance with the nature of the displayed image - it decreases for light images in general and increases for dark ones. As a result, the obtained dependence of brightness on hue (gamma curve), most likely, does not correspond slightly to the gamma curve of a static image, since the measurements were carried out at serial output shades of gray to almost the entire screen. This dynamism is enhanced by the choice of the option Auto tuning screen brightness- light images are slightly darkened, but energy is saved a little.

Color gamut in case of profiles Dynamic, Standard and Professional photography very wide and overlaps with Adobe RGB:

When choosing a profile Cinema (Movie) the coverage shrinks to the sRGB borders, but still remains a little wider:

Without correction, the spectra of the components are very well separated:

In case of a profile Cinema with maximum correction, the color components are already slightly mixed with each other:

Note that on screens with a wide gamut, the colors of conventional images optimized for sRGB devices appear unnaturally saturated. This can be seen in the above photos. However, a visual assessment showed that when choosing a profile Cinema saturation is noticeably reduced to bring colors closer to natural. The screenshot after selecting this profile is shown below:

Unfortunately, the most recognizable shades - skin, for example - are still slightly oversaturated. The grayscale balance is good. Color temperature in profiles Dynamic and Standard significantly above 6500 K, in the other two it is close to 6500 K and changes insignificantly from shade to shade. The deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) for most of the gray scale remains below 10 units, which is considered a good indicator for a consumer device, and also changes slightly:

(In most cases, the darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance there does not really matter, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

To summarize: the screen has a fairly high maximum brightness and a very effective anti-glare filter, so the smartphone can be used outdoors without any problems even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable value. It is permissible to use a mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works absolutely adequately. The advantages of the screen include a very good oleophobic coating and close to standard color balance (when choosing the appropriate profiles). At the same time, let's recall the general advantages of OLED screens: true black color, excellent uniformity of the white field, less than that of LCDs, a drop in image brightness when viewed from an angle. The disadvantages include the modulation of the screen brightness, which appears at medium and low brightness values. Users who are particularly sensitive to flicker may experience increased fatigue due to this. However, the overall screen quality is very high.

Sound

There are no special complaints about the sound of the speakers of the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini Black Edition. The sound is loud enough and at the same time remains clear across the entire frequency spectrum - however, low frequencies still not enough. The voice of a familiar interlocutor, timbre and intonation remain recognizable, the conversation is quite comfortable. The grille for sound output is cut into the rear wall here, so the sound is muffled when the device is on the table.

Everything sound effects when playing melodies with a standard player, they are united by a technology called SoundAlive - however, some of them, such as the expansion of the virtual stereo base, are available only with connected headphones. The same goes for the sound optimization function.

The smartphone is preinstalled with a voice recorder, which serves only to create sound notes - to record by standard means telephone conversations from the line he does not know how. There is also an FM radio in the smartphone, it is possible to record broadcasts from the air.

Camera

Samsung Galaxy S4 mini Black Edition is equipped with two modules digital cameras... The front camera here is equipped with a 1.9-megapixel module, shoots with a maximum resolution of 1392 × 1392. The quality of the resulting photos can be judged by the test shot below.

The main rear 8-megapixel camera shoots with a maximum resolution of 3264 × 2448 (3264 × 1836, if you switch the shooting mode to wide-aspect ratio). This camera can shoot video with a maximum resolution of 1920 × 1080 (30 fps). The video quality can be judged by the test clip below (video: MPEG4 Video (H.264) 1920 × 1080 30 fps 17 Mbps; audio: AAC 48 kHz stereo 123 kbps).

  • Movie # 1 (72 MB, 1920 × 1080)

The set of settings for controlling the camera is standard for modern Samsung smartphones. There are a lot of them, they are all divided into three columns: for photography, for video filming and general. The icons are drawn clearly and large, they are quite distinguishable in the bright sun. Various options for preset values in the settings are combined into ready-made shooting modes that should be used in a given situation.

Good mid-range sharpness.

In foregrounds and mid-planes, sharpness is also good.

Small focus errors sometimes occur.

Quite decent sharpness and almost no sharpening.

Field sharpness is good. The numbers of the nearest cars are distinguishable.

Good sharpness and decent detail for 8 megapixels.

The camera is good at shooting people.

The text has been worked out well and is practically not damaged.

The camera copes well with macro photography.

Another example of a pretty good macro.

Some shots give the impression that the camera has a small "back-focus", that is, when shooting, it focuses on the plan behind the subject. However, this does not prevent her from getting great pictures. The camera has a quality lens that matches the sensor well. The software processing is very decent: due to the good natural sharpness, there is practically no sharpening in the pictures, there are no noticeable noise in the shadows, the noise reduction works well. Even the fact that most of the pictures were taken in good lighting does not detract from the merits of the camera - the program does not try to "improve" what has already turned out well.

Perhaps we can conclude that the camera has no shortcomings as such. There is a light "back-focus", which practically does not interfere and, moreover, is completely treated programmatically. The camera is well suited for artistic and documentary shooting and will allow you to take pictures of the level of a good smartphone flagship.

Telephone part and communications

The smartphone works as standard in modern networks 2G GSM, 3G WCDMA and 4G (LTE); two Wi-Fi bands are supported, there is also NFC support. You can also organize a wireless access point as standard via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth channels. Support for fourth-generation networks and communication technology over short distances NFC - this is the most important and most noticeable difference between the model with the GT-I9195 index and the GT-I9190 model we reviewed earlier. With the SIM-card of the domestic operator Megafon, the smartphone in practice confidently finds and works with the LTE network.

Spontaneous reboots / shutdowns during testing were not observed, as well as slowdowns or freezes of the system. Unfortunately, no LED sensor was provided for notifying the charging status and incoming events in the smartphone.

Drawing letters and numbers virtual keyboards very small and not quite comfortable to operate. The layout and arrangement of the keys is standard for Samsung devices and is also not the most convenient: instead of just pressing the dedicated button with the globe, here you have to switch language layouts by side scrolling with the spacebar, which is certainly less convenient. There is no dedicated top row with numbers - you will have to switch the layout from numbers to letters and vice versa every time. The phone application supports Smart Dial, that is, while dialing phone number the search is immediately carried out by the first letters in the contacts.

OS and software

Samsung Galaxy S4 mini Black Edition runs on Google Android software platform version 4.2.2. On top of the standard OS interface, the company installed its own user interface called TouchWiz 5.0 (Nature UX). Everything here is arranged in exactly the same way as the original mini model, with the exception of a few additional preinstalled programs which were not in the original. Since the model belongs to a separate "limited" series, it was necessary to stand out with something, and the developers found such a way. They installed a program called "Gift" into the smartphone, opening which, the user gets access to the possibility of free downloading and installing several additional programs... However, in the end, the list of what was promised did not coincide with the list of actually available applications. There were only three of them available: a six-month license for Kaspersky Anti-Virus, the application “ smart alarm clock", As well as some program for managing your own finances - not a lot, frankly. The rest of the promised applications from the list in the store itself did not appear, perhaps they will be posted later.

In the new version of the Samsung TouchWiz shell, the main settings menu is divided into four tabs, this innovation was discovered for the first time in original Galaxy S4. Now you need to remember in which of these tabs what is. Additional applications a lot is preinstalled initially. Most of Samsung's proprietary apps are bundled separately from Google services account, so to use them you will have to create more and account in the services of the company.

Performance

The hardware platform of the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini Black Edition is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC (MSM8960). The central processor here has 2 Krait 300 cores, clocked at 1.7 GHz. Random access memory the device provides 1.5 GB, and the storage available to the user to upload their own files is only about 5 GB out of the nominally designated 8 GB - the rest went to the system itself and applications. The memory can be increased by using microSD cards up to 64 GB, but you cannot connect a flash drive via an OTG adapter here - the device does not support this mode.

In nature, there is another, quad-core modification of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC (MSM8226), which is configured with 4 ARM Cortex A7 cores - this configuration is even more common. For example, it runs the latest smartphones we tested. Motorola moto G, LG L90 and Asus Padfone mini (1.2 GHz to 1.4 GHz cores). The work of the hero of today's review is based on SoC MSM8960, which is also called Qualcomm Snapdragon 400, but it has CPU has 2 Krait 300 cores with a frequency of 1.7 GHz. Well, it will be interesting to compare these hardware platforms with each other, which have identical names, but completely different processor cores.

To get an idea of the performance of the tested smartphone platform, let's run a standard set of tests.

All the results we got when testing a smartphone in the most fresh versions popular benchmarks, we have tabulated for convenience. Several other devices from different segments are usually added to the table, also tested on similar latest versions benchmarks (this is done only for a visual assessment of the resulting dry numbers). Unfortunately, within the framework of one comparison, it is impossible to present the results from different versions benchmarks, so many worthy and relevant models remain "behind the scenes" - due to the fact that they once passed their "obstacle courses" on previous versions of test programs.

The test results showed that the two faster Krait 300 cores (1.7 GHz) of the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini Black Edition were able to compete on equal terms only with those four ARM Cortex A7 cores, whose frequency was raised to 1.4 GHz ( Asus configuration padfone mini). The usual configuration of the platform, which also has four ARM Cortex A7 cores, but clocked at 1.2 GHz, looks weaker. In principle, the results are quite expected, however, it is still worth drawing the attention of users to the fact that it turns out that Snapdragon 400 platforms are completely different, and you still need to carefully look at deeper specifications when choosing.

As for the competing MediaTek, the quad-core MT6589 is the most suitable for comparison, which has the same 4 ARM Cortex-A7 cores. The Qualcomm system (Snapdragon 400) easily outpaced its most advanced version MT6589T, which has a core frequency of up to 1.5 GHz. In terms of graphics, the Adreno 305 clearly outperforms the PowerVR SGX 544MP video subsystem included in MTK chipsets in all tests.

In general, according to the results of all tests, the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini Black Edition smartphone can be safely attributed to the category of devices with an average (even slightly above average) performance. At the moment, the power of this smartphone should be enough to perform almost any tasks that any games or other applications from Google play Store.

Test results in MobileXPRT, as well as the latest versions of AnTuTu 4.x and GeekBench 3:

When testing in 3DMark for the most productive smartphones, it is now possible to use the Unlimited mode, where the rendering resolution is fixed at 720p and VSync is disabled (which can cause the speed to rise above 60 fps).

Video playback

For testing "omnivorous" when playing video (including support for various codecs, containers and special features, for example subtitles), we used videos of the most common formats, which make up the bulk of the content available on the Web. Note that it is important for mobile devices to have support for hardware video decoding at the chip level, since processing modern options due to the processor cores alone, it is most often impossible. Also, do not expect a mobile device to decode everything, since the leadership in flexibility belongs to the PC, and no one is going to challenge it. All results are summarized in a single table.

According to the results Samsung testing Galaxy S4 mini Black Edition was not equipped with all the necessary decoders, in this case sound ones, which are necessary to fully play most of the most common files on the network. To play them successfully, you will have to resort to using a third-party player - for example, MX Player. True, in it, you will first have to change the settings, switching from hardware decoding to software or to new regime entitled Hardware +(not supported by all smartphones), only then the sound will appear. All results are summarized in a single table.

To test the display of video files on the screen of the device itself, we used a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see "Methodology for testing video playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)"). Screenshots with an exposure of 1 s helped to determine the nature of the frame output of video files with various parameters: the resolution varied (1280 by 720 (720p) and 1920 by 1080 (1080p) pixels) and the frame rate (24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps). With). In our tests, we used the MX Player video player in the "Hardware" mode. The results of this test are summarized in the table:

Note: If both columns Uniformity and Skips green ratings are set, this means that, most likely, when watching movies, artifacts caused by uneven alternation and skipping of frames will either not be visible at all, or their number and visibility will not affect the viewing comfort. Red marks indicate possible problems related to the playback of the respective files.

According to the criterion for outputting frames, the quality of video playback on the screen of the smartphone itself is high (except for Full HD files with 50 and 60 frames / s), since frames (or groups of frames) can be output with more or less uniform alternation of intervals and without frame drops. However, the uniform interleaving of frames is a relatively unstable state, since some external and internal background processes lead to periodic failure of the correct interleaving of intervals between frames and even to the skipping of single frames. When playing video files with 720p and 1080p resolution and 16: 9 aspect ratio, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly on the edge of the screen. The brightness range displayed on the screen actually corresponds to the standard range of 16-235 - in the shadows only a couple of shades merge with black, but all the shades are displayed in the highlights. However, dark scenes may not look very good, as the darkest shades differ too much in brightness and color tone, which can lead to overly noticeable compression artifacts.

Battery life

The capacity of the lithium-ion battery installed in the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini Black Edition is 1900 mAh, which is small for a modern smartphone. Nevertheless, the device demonstrated excellent battery life, once again confirming the truth, proven by numerous tests, that not only an increase in the capacity of the battery itself, but also a correct approach to optimizing power consumption can significantly affect the duration of the device as a whole.

By the way, one curious observation is connected with this: the data we have collected on the ratio of the battery capacity of a smartphone to the duration of its autonomous work clearly demonstrate that it is precisely two Korean companies - Samsung and LG - that have pulled out far ahead in this regard in recent years. Simply put, if you take smartphones with the same battery capacity and equal screen sizes, then Samsung or LG devices will most likely work longer than all of them.

Continuous reading in the FBReader program (with a standard, light theme) at the minimum comfortable brightness level (the brightness was set to 100 cd / m²) lasted more than 16 hours until the battery was completely discharged. When you watch YouTube videos continuously in high quality(HQ) with the same brightness level through the home Wi-Fi network the device lasted 10.5 hours, and in 3D games - about 4.5 hours.

Outcome

As for the price, it is already known that the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini Black Edition smartphone went on sale in Russian stores since February 2014 according to the recommended retail price 16 thousand rubles.

In general, we have a decent smartphone with good, although not maximum performance, a proprietary AMOLED screen, convenient controls, rich technical equipment (LTE support, infrared port, etc.), a good camera and perfectly optimized software with the widest possibilities for customization. Controversial in this model, as in many other smartphones of the company, are the boring design of the same type, body materials that cannot be called premium, and too high a price at which it would be possible to provide users with real metal and leather, and not their imitation. As for the belonging of the smartphone to the Black Edition series, there is no increase in cost - it is officially sold at exactly the same price. conventional models Samsung Galaxy S4 mini GT-I9195, so in terms of choice, this is just a matter of taste.
