Copy files from disk to disk. How to rip music from CD to computer? How to Rip Music from CD to Computer Using Windows Media Player

Nowadays, disks are no longer used so often, even new computers often do not have disk drives, and even small laptops do not have them - they take up too much precious space. In this article, we will look at how to properly copy the contents of one CD / DVD disc to another.

How to copy a data disc to another disc

If you have regular files on your disk, for example, mp3 files or all sorts of documents, then copying the disk is as easy as shelling pears. There is even no need to resort to special programs. Just select all files and folders on the disk and copy to any folder on your computer. Then insert a blank disc into the drive and open it in Windows Explorer. Copy or drag and drop files there previously copied from another disk. It remains only to right-click on the disk icon and select "Burn".

If you copy, for example, an audio disc, then you will not be able to simply copy this to your hard drive. To do this, you need to make a complete disk image. Then deploy this image to a new disk. Windows does not have a built-in imaging tool, so we will use the simple and free Small CD-Writer (virus tested). Everything is simple in it, first you create an ISO image, and then burn it to disc.

Common mistakes when copying discs

Even if you have 2 CD / DVD drives installed in your computer, you shouldn't do on-the-fly copying. It is simpler, no intermediate stage is needed, but it is not very reliable.

When writing data to disc, do not select the maximum speed, as this also increases the likelihood of writing errors.

If you still have questions, we will definitely help you!

Despite the fact that there are so many smart gadgets around us and the possibilities associated with them, we are not always easy and simple to navigate in all this ... So let's say, even a simple ripping of audio files from CDs can cause difficulty. Indeed, the manufacturer did not make this process intuitive, which is why you probably came to our page to find out how to copy audio from a CD or as it is also called CD to a computer. This is exactly what our article is about.

How to set up Media player to rip music from CD

First of all, you need to open the player, the standard program that comes by default to the system. For this...

1. Open Start> All Programs> Windows Media Player. If you suddenly do not have "Start", then press the Windows + R keys at the same time, and then copy and enter wmplayer.exe into the line. Then click OK. The player will load in front of you.

2. In Windows Media Player (Library mode), click Organize> Options. See the picture below ...

As soon as we hit Windows Media Player Options, the fun begins. We look ...

Here you can select the path to save the files. We would recommend that you immediately change the path to the "Desktop", so as not to scour later where everything has been saved. You can also select audio formats:

WMA 48-192 kbps;
WMA Pro 48-192 kbps;
WMA (Variable Bit Rate) from 40-75 kbps to 240-355 kbps;
WMA no data loss 470-940 kbps;
MP3 128-320 kbps;
WAV is a lossless audio format.

We also select the quality by moving the slider from left to right and vice versa.

How to rip audio CD recordings to your computer

1. If you still have not inserted the CD, then insert it.

2. Check the boxes for the tracks you want to copy. All or those that you want to take. Perhaps a warning about rights will pop up, that they must be observed and all that, of course we say that we all know ...

3. Now go to Unknown album> Copy disc to library ...

4. All files will start to fill in green and thus be copied. Wait for the end of such copying. Now all that remains is to find them on the computer.
5. If you changed the path, see what we talked about above, then we are looking for records there. If we did not touch anything, then we open it along the following path ...

That's all. You have achieved what you wanted, now you can be distracted by other things, in accordance with your priorities!

Introduction

Converting music CDs to MP3 has changed a lot. You no longer have to go through the discs in the CD rack to find the track you want to hear. Now you can select it from your music storage and listen directly to it directly on your PC or portable media player. Music is available anytime, anywhere and in the form in which you want. It is perfectly legal to make copies for personal use, and there are so many programs now that can do it.

However, things get more complicated when it comes to ripping DVDs. First, the DVD-Video format is more complex in structure. Any track on a CD is a WAV file that can be ripped or converted, and the DVD content is split into video, sound, and navigation menus stored in VOB files. The menu allows you to select video scenes, alternate soundtracks, titles, camera angles, audio commentary and additional content.

DVD files are larger than WAV tracks and the conversion process is more time consuming. Video processing always takes a lot of processor resources: on a PC with a 500 MHz DVD processor, you have to copy DVDs for 24 hours, while a 2 GHz processor does the same job in 3-4 hours. And although movie files after conversion will take up less space than DVD, it is better to leave ten gigabytes for video on a PC or media player.

Licensed DVDs have their own peculiarities: it is protection against copying discs and the issue of legality of copying information from them (albeit for personal use). Many well-known free DVD ripping programs are no longer legally available, and not even all DVD ripping programs that you can buy will work with licensed DVDs.

Our material is intended only for those users who legally bought a DVD with a movie.

Your video is where you want it

Ripping a DVD is not an infringement of copyright - for example, why not just make a backup. DVDs are physically strong enough, but many dangers await them in the apartment: children who like shiny objects, acquaintances who just strive to use them as coffee coasters, dust and scratches. Playing the DVD frequently won't damage it, but it easily collects dust and minor scratches the moment you take it out of the box. This is enough for the disc to start "jumping" or refuse to play at all. (We do not recommend storing the DVD horizontally, leaving it in a sunny place, and storing it in CD boxes - the disc holder is too tight and can damage the disc).

In rare cases, discs may delaminate. Rust spots may also appear. And in such cases it will often not work to change the disk.

Another problem is that you can watch DVDs in a DVD player, but if you have a portable media player, you certainly want to enjoy your video on the go. Media Center PCs always have a DVD drive, but you still have to change discs in the tray to watch something else. In addition, if you watch DVDs while traveling, your laptop's battery will drain faster, since the hard drive and DVD drive are running at the same time.

Convert your DVD videos to Windows Media format or to DivX compressed files for even more viewing options. You can store movies on a server or network attached storage (NAS) and watch them from any computer in the house without the hassle of moving discs from one room to another (even computers that don't have a DVD drive can now be used). You can also take some DVD movies with you that do not take up space and weigh nothing.

DVD Ripper Platinum converts DVD movie using the codecs and resolutions supported by the mainstream of portable media players. Click on the picture to enlarge.

When converting DVD to another format, video quality is lost: do not rely on the former resolution and detail, in addition, access to bonuses will disappear. But for a small screen or for situations where a portable DVD player cannot be used, such a compromise is perfectly acceptable.

DVD structure

You can burn MPEG2 files to disc, but if not properly structured and organized, they won't turn into DVDs. Even the menu won't appear and most DVD players won't be able to figure out what to do with that disc. When you browse the contents of the DVD with your computer, you will see at least two folders and a large list of files. We neglect the AUDIO_TS folder: it stores audio tracks used mainly on DVD-Audio discs. We are interested in the VIDEO_TS folder - it contains a set of files that make up the movie and related content, as well as navigation information. The DVD root directory may contain other folders with additional content such as games, web links, or screensavers that you can watch on your PC.

Video DVD disc structure. Click on the picture to enlarge.

There are three types of files located in the VIDEO_TS folder: VOB (video object) files contain video and audio information, IFO (information) files store navigation information and configuration, and finally, files with the BUP extension are IFO backups. files (they are located on the outer tracks of the DVD and exist in case the IFO files are damaged, for example, due to fingerprints; in such situations, you can hope to continue working). Files in the VIDEO_TS folder are organized by VTS-sets (Video Title Sets); each consists of an IFO file, a BUP file, and at least two VOB files — one for menus and one for video. The VOB file cannot be larger than 1 GB, so there can be multiple. If the disc contains a lot of information, then there will be more than one VTS-set, with VOB-files inside. There can be no more than five such sets on a single-layer DVD, and nine on a double-layer DVD.

One of the VTS sets is the main movie, while others can contain additional content: audio commentaries, a gallery of photos, trailers, biographies of the actors involved in the shooting, alternative endings, and so on. There is also usually a set consisting of VIDEO_TS.VOB, VIDEO_TS.IFO and VIDEO_TS.BUP files (there is no second VOB file here). This set is automatically launched when you load a disc into a DVD player: you usually see a copyright warning and a message from the FBI, but sometimes a menu appears from which you can select the audio language. The VIDEO_TS.IFO file also stores information about the regional protection of the disc.

VOB files contain video and audio tracks, subtitles used in this VTS set - with all kinds of soundtracks, alternative camera angles, versions of pictures with text for other languages - all this is stored in one file. Video is stored in MPEG2 format with 720x480 resolution on NTSC discs and 720x576 on PAL discs. There is almost always a Dolby Digital AC-3 soundtrack on a disc, although some older European and Japanese discs use the uncompressed PCM format (the same as wav files on music CDs). There can also be two audio tracks - one for stereo and the other for 5.1 systems. Higher quality DTS, Dolby Digital EX, DTS ES tracks may also be present.

Most DVD movies contain a large number of audio language tracks. And if you leave only the one you need, you can save space. Click on the picture to enlarge.

The menu requires its own VOB file because it contains video and animation. IFO files can be thought of as bookmarks that let you start watching from a specific episode or chapter. The IFO file also contains information about the VOB file: frame format, subtitles, and language audio tracks. If you rip a DVD without IFO files, the video may not display correctly or may not work at all.

Content Scrambling System Protection

Most licensed DVDs use an encryption system called the content scrambling system (CSS). The key for decrypting the contents of the disc is stored in a special (by default inaccessible) area of the media - the lead-in. DVD players or DVD Video programs ask the drive for this key to identify the disc. Attempting to copy data from DVD directly usually fails. If you used a software player to watch videos, you can copy the contents of the disc to the hard drive, since the DVD is already identified, but you cannot play these files.

In the US, cracking CSS encryption is prohibited by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and in the UK there is a similar law based on the European Union Copyright Directive. There are other security systems as well, including Macrovision, RipGuard, and ArccOS.

What do you need to copy?

You can watch simple VOB files with any MPEG2 player. VLC Media Player can play different formats, including VOB files, but it doesn't know how to use camera angles and other features. Click on the picture to enlarge.

VOB files use MPEG2 encoding, you can play them directly in a software DVD player, but accessibility features such as viewing angles may not work correctly. The same frame format is stored in the IFO file, so not only VOB files will have to be copied. The largest IFO file usually belongs to the VTS set of the main movie, it is usually called VTS_01_0.IFO, the file with the menu is VTS_01_0.VOB, and the movie stream and soundtrack are in VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, etc. Most copying utilities allow you to view a picture from a VTS set (you can select the VTS set you need, and the main VTS set is selected by default). If you are dealing with a double-sided DVD or a disc containing a series of short scenes, you will need to copy multiple VTS sets.

How to rip DVD?

How and what to copy depends on what you want to do with the video. To create a backup, you need to copy everything from disk in the highest possible quality (that is, do not compress it), but in most cases it is enough to just copy the main movie without all the unnecessary. Double-layer stamped discs are larger than recordable single-layer DVD-R / RW discs, so you have to either split the content into two discs, or reduce the quality (compress the movie), or remove the excess from the DVD. If you remove the menu, bonuses, a voluminous audio track and additional tracks, trim the titles, then a movie with an 8 GB DVD can fit on a 4 GB disc,

Subtitles take up little space, so you shouldn't be distracted by them, although some programs can remove subtitles as well. If there is room left, you can add bonuses as you wish. Many programs can cut out black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, and then add them to the compressed movie, so that they do not take up much space. If you do not want to remove titles at the end of the movie at all, then Auto Gordian Knot, for example, can lower their quality, which will save you from 40 to 50 MB.

If you don't know why you need subtitles, turn them off. And save space. Click on the picture to enlarge.

If you want your backup to fit on a CD rather than a DVD, you can convert your movie to Video CD (VCD) or Super Video CD (SVCD) format. If you are going to watch videos on your PC, home media center, or if you want to save battery on your laptop, you can leave the VOB files unchanged. However, you can save space by converting to formats such as WMV or AVI while maintaining relatively high video quality.

Alternatively, you can re-encode the DVD completely while maintaining the structure and compatibility with DVD players. This can be done by programs such as DVD Shrink, which simply recode MPEG streams, slightly lowering the quality (depending on the size of the original movie). If you want to watch a movie on a portable media player, then you must also change the resolution when transcoding. You will get a small size movie, but its format (in which you will encode) must be supported by the media player. Utilities like Magic DVD Ripper or AVS Video Converter, can convert video to the desired format, for example, for iPod or Sony PSP, and you can also select the desired screen resolution. For most players, the MPEG-4 DivX and XviD formats are a good compromise between file size and quality. DivX is more popular today, but XviD is open source. When converting, you can specify not only the desired stream, but also the desired file size. For mobile phones that play videos, the 3GP format is usually used.

You can get excellent sound quality if you keep the Dolby AC3 soundtrack format, but if the movie is too long or there is not much room for the sound, you can recode the track to MP3 format. Classic films are still recorded in mono on two tracks, so it is perfectly possible to leave only one track, saving additional space. In programs that allow you to set the size of the output file (say, for the Video CD format or AVI file), we do not recommend saving the track in AC3 format if the file size is small: then the video quality will be low, since the audio track will take up too much space.

Where can you find out more?

Doom9 doesn't have as many tutorials as other sites, but they are well organized. A glossary is also available covering many terms, from frame format to codecs. The tutorials are categorized according to the format of the final video you want. There is also a section on converting non-DVD formats.

VideoHelp.com (also available under the domains VCDHelp and DVDHelp) contains a large list of links to other sites' tutorials on how to create Video CDs, SVCDs and DVDs from various sources.

DigitalDigest contains information about HD DVD and Blu Ray, as well as DivX, XviD and digital TV. The reference materials mainly mention free and trial versions of the programs, so you can start ripping DVD without delay.

DVD Decrypter is a free utility to create DVD backups. It simply copies VOB and IFO files to your hard drive, and then you can burn them to DVD-R / RW disc or convert them to another video format, for example, using the DVD Shrink utility. DVD Decrypter was one of the most famous DVD ripping software, so third-party developers have created quite a few tools that work with it, such as RipIt4Me (offers a wizard interface that creates DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink configuration files). Sorry, Macrovision has purchased the rights to the software and has ceased distribution.

DVDIdle's DVDFab Platinum is a good alternative for backing up DVDs as even a beginner can work with it. The program consists of two parts: DVDFab Express (compresses DVD to the size of one DVD-R / RW disc along with menus and bonuses) and DVDFab Gold (allows you to split a large movie to DVD, copy a movie to a hard disk or create an ISO image for burning to disc later). The program can cut additional language audio tracks and subtitles, you can also select the default track. DVDIdle also provides a free but less functional DVDFab Decrypter.

DVDFab has an intuitive interface that allows you to choose the optimal settings for creating a DVD copy. Click on the picture to enlarge.

If you want to convert your videos for viewing on different platforms, Xilisoft's DVD Ripper Platinum provides a wide variety of choices. She has the ability to convert a movie to DivX, XviD, AVI, Video CD, SVCD, WMV and ASF formats, and you can choose the resolution and codecs. Not only iPod and PSP are supported, but also iRiver, Archos and Zen players, as well as mobile phones. There are settings for some PDAs with different screen resolutions. DVD Ripper Platinum is one of the fastest programs, and the interface provides very complete information about the encoded video. As usual, you can save only the desired language audio track, remove subtitles, remove unnecessary camera angles, or select specific chapters of the movie.

One of the most popular DVD ripping software is DVD Shrink. It has a simple interface and great functionality. It can be used to compress a DVD movie into a 1 GB DVD container for storage on a hard drive, compress DVD-9 to DVD-5 for recording on a single layer DVD-R / RW, or, with special effort, burn a DVD movie to CD. -disk (but for this operation we do not recommend saving the MPEG2 / DVD format, it is better to convert the file to DivX / Xvid using other utilities). No special effort is required.

Let's take a closer look at the process of converting DVD using DVD Shrink. Insert the disc, press the "Open Disc" button. The process of analyzing the disk will begin, it takes about a minute. Next, we see the structure of the disc: folders "Menus", "Main Movie", "Extras" and "Unreferenced Material". The number and names of directories may vary from disc to disc.

DVD Shrink shows the structure of a DVD movie. Click on the picture to enlarge.

To make a complete copy of a DVD, there is a special button "Backup!". It is possible to choose how to make a copy of the DVD: burn an ISO image of the disc, just copy the DVD files to your hard drive, or burn another DVD right away. The last step requires an installed version of Nero.

There are three ways to create a DVD backup.

Still, the main function of DVDShrink is the ability to reduce the size of the DVD. Open the "Edit"> "Preferences" menu. Select the output data format: disk size (you can set your own), audio format, subtitles. The size can also be reduced manually, without the risk of losing important data. There are two ways here: delete or compress content. Most likely, you do not need the original language track, for example, in English - leave only the one you need.

The content that makes up the menu or bonuses can be removed or compressed.

What should i avoid?

While looking for DVD ripping software, you may come across pirated versions of software, spyware, utilities like DVD X Copy that have been removed from the market due to dubious legality, and people who will try to sell you free utilities.

Therefore, we recommend using the sites listed above. Programs such as Easy DVDx, Copy DVDz, DVD Wizard Pro, DVD Copy Pro, Copy DVD Pro, DVD-Cutter, DVD Squeeze, DVD Copy Decrypter, DVD Echo, DVD Copy Gold, DVD Magik Pro, and DVD X Copy should be avoided. You can find a lot of programs, but some of them have problems with legality. So be careful and only use the utilities we recommend.

Hello, I will briefly express my problem. There is very little experience of working with a computer, so do not scold too much for questions. I recently bought a laptop with a pre-installed Windows 7 operating system. I know that it does not have a built-in program for working with CD and DVD discs, I mean recording and so on. Accordingly, the question is, the information I need, because there is probably a good and proven free software? I tried to use the ImgBurn program, but in my opinion there is no direct copying of discs in it at all, or I simply did not find it? I also want to install Ashampoo Burning Studio, so everything will probably be fine there. Dmitriy.
Second letter. Faced a problem that I cannot fix on my own. I figured out the settings of the Nero 8 program and apparently changed something in the Nero Burning ROM application, now, instead of copying the disc I need to a blank disc, Nero tries to Save the image file to the hard disk.
And in Nero Express I create an image from my files and burn it to a disc, but the information on this disc is not readable at all. Thanks in advance. Vladimir.

How to rip from disk to disk

As you rightly pointed out, there are quite a few free programs that could rewrite almost any CD or DVD you have. I personally prefer to work with two free apps Ashampoo Burning Studio and ImgBurn, which have long proven themselves on the good side. Well, two paid Nero 8 and Nero 6.
Unfortunately, Windows 7 itself can only burn the finished image to a blank CD (if you hover the mouse over any image and right-click, a menu will open in which you can select Open With, and then select Windows Disk Image Writers).

And very often one of the very first problems that beginners face after purchasing a computer is finding and installing programs for working with CDs, DVDs.
So our freeware ones are Ashampoo Burning Studio and ImgBurn. It is very easy to work with them, they are in Russian and even a complete beginner can handle them. How to download and install these programs is described step by step in our article, you can follow the link and familiarize yourself, I will not repeat myself. In this article I will go directly directly to working with them. For those who are interested how to write from disk to disk various information using the program Nero 8 and Nero 6, and what errors may be made in this case, can go directly to the end of the article.
Ashampoo Burning Studio, the main window of the program, as you can see, its capabilities are quite large and it will undoubtedly come in handy for you. So insert the disc that you need to copy or rewrite to the CD / DVD drive.
We choose Rip CD / DVD / Bly-ray disc.

Next, you need to select the source drive, those users who have installed programs for working with virtual drives, for example Daemon Tools, must specify their real drive here, in my case Optiarc DVD RW AD-7191S and click next.

We insert a blank CD and DVD disc, depending on what we are copying. Push Burn DVD

There is a short burning process and the disc is ready.

How to rip from disk to disk the files we need using ImgBurn. Before us is the main window of the program. This program was originally intended primarily for creating and burning almost any existing image. You can also use it to create an audio CD from files: AAC, APE, FLAC and the like. It is possible to create a DVD video disc from the VIDEO_TS folder.
In this program, there is no direct CD / DVD copy function, but if you do not need to rewrite discs often, then you can first create an image of the disc you need in this program, and then burn it to a blank disc.
In the main window of the program, select Create disk image.

We select the destination folder, that is, where exactly on our hard disk the image will be created.

You can select a desktop and give the image any name, for example, My Image, then click the Save button.

Press the read button. The image is being created.

Now it's the turn to burn this image onto a blank disc, insert it into the CD / DVD drive.
In the main ImgBurn window select Burn the image to disk.

Under Select a file,

select our image and then Open.

Now let's take a look at working with the Nero 8 program.
The initial window of the Nero 8 -Nero StartSmart program, from which we can launch the following programs with which you can copy the files we need from disk to disk and more.
Nero StartSmart- a module for launching your ready-made projects
Nero Burning ROM- a special module for creating images and burning discs
Nero Express- a very simple module, one might say for the same purposes.
Let's start with Nero StartSmart - insert the disc into the drive and click on the Copy Disc button, then Copy.

After a short copying process

insert a blank disc for recording and press Download, in a couple of minutes our disk will be ready.

The same can be done with Nero Burning ROM. Choose Launch Nero Applications and Tools, then Nero Burning ROM.

If we want to rewrite a DVD, then we will select a project DVD, then DVD-Copy and most importantly, if you intend to rewrite a DVD disc, and NOT create an image, then in the List of recorders item your CD / DVD drive, in my case Optiarc DVD RW AD-7191S. Push Copying.

The copying process will begin, then you will need to insert a blank disc.

Nero Express is also very simple.

Image, project, copying. Copy of entire DVD.

We also pay attention to the fact that Source drive and Receiver drive were specified correctly, click on the Copy button.

How to rip music from CD to computer

Very often (almost always) music on CDs is copy-protected. If you open the CD, you will notice that all the "tracks" are less than 1 KB - usually 44 bytes. By simply copying to the hard drive, it is these music “labels” (CD tracks) that will be copied, not the mp3 files.

On the screenshot: shortcuts to mp3-files on the CD with Celine Dion's album.

There are many grabber programs that read and write write-protected music discs - I personally have enough of a good program AudioGrabber, which has many fine settings. However, it is quite possible to get by with the standard Windows Media Player that comes with the Windows operating system.

How to Rip Music from CD to Computer Using Windows Media Player

If you have removed the Media Player shortcut from the desktop, you can start it from the menu: "Start" - "All Programs" - "Windows Media Player".

Insert the CD or DVD into the drive and select "Copy from disc" in the main menu of the Media Player program.

Choose whether or not to enable copy protection and understand "that music ... is protected by copyright laws ...". Then click "OK".

Copying audio files to the hard disk starts ...

By default, a folder with the music of the album is created in the standard folder "My Music" on the C drive. You can get to it through the folder "My Documents" or through the menu: "Start" - "My Music".

Here you can see that the copied files have normal "megabit" sizes.

Unfortunately, the files were copied in the "Windows" wma format, which is not loaded into Liru's posts. But we have an old friend -
