Tablet Apple iPad mini 3 took no more than 25 seconds, and as it turned out, for a reason. Unlike the iPad Air 2, the iPad mini 3 has practically nothing really new - the characteristics of the "new item" almost completely repeat the parameters of their predecessor. Apple iPad mini 3 is compact, but thicker than its competitors, despite this it is convenient to take it anywhere with you. The rechargeable battery has remained as before "long-playing", but even here competitors are stepping on the tail, and even overtaking. We also note the Retina display, in general it is bright, but the color gamut and viewing angles could be "pulled up" to the level of the iPad Air.

The tablet got last year's filling, but despite this, it showed some of the best results in our tests - most games will fly over the next year. Among the minuses, we note the cameras, although this is not the most important for a tablet, it is still more convenient to shoot with a compact tablet than with a 10-inch one. The cameras remained at the same level as the first and second iPad mini, except that the tablet became a little better at shooting in low light.

But small changes were made to the case of the device: in addition to silver and black, there is also a gold iPad mini. The round button under the display has also changed slightly - now it has a proprietary Touch ID fingerprint scanner. However, despite this, the tablet will not work with the Apple Pay payment system.

If you look at the tablet in isolation from its predecessors, then it is good, although it looks a little pale compared to the Android competitors. If you think about the alternatives in the form of iPad mini 2, or even the first iPad mini, then a reasonable question arises - is it worth paying extra $ 100 for Touch ID and a gold case? In addition, the third mini lost the 32 GB version, and since they do not have and did not have a slot for a memory card, you are simply pushed to buy a version with 64 GB of internal memory. In our opinion, at least until the price of the Apple iPad mini 3 drops, it is unlikely to be a huge success.

Materials and design - 5.0

Apple hasn't updated the design of its mini tablet. All three iPad mini are almost identical in appearance. Apple iPad mini 3 has a classic rectangular case with rounded edges. In terms of its proportions, it is wider and slightly "shorter" than most 8-inch tablets. The side frames still do not seem thick, yet they were made "with a margin" at one time. Below the display is a single Home button, but now it's not just a button, but also a Touch ID sensor that recognizes fingerprints. Other controls remained in the same places: on the top right end there is a power key, on the top right end there are volume keys, there is also a mode switch. On the back there is a corporate logo with an apple, in upper corner there is a camera lens. By the way, unlike the iPad mini 2, there is no “ring” around the lens now. Note that the location of the lens is very convenient, for example, when shooting horizontal shots, you are unlikely to take off your fingers. At the bottom there are two rows of stereo speaker holes, which means that the sound will go down from you.

The body of the tablet is made of a single piece of aluminum, as if "wrapping" the front panel. Build quality on high level, nothing crunches or bends if you press with your hands. A third has been added to the two traditional colors: Apple iPad mini 3 is available in white, black and gold.

Dimensions and weight - 4.8

The Apple iPad mini 3 is not heavy: the Wi-Fi version weighs 332 grams, while the modem version is 10 grams more. iPad mini 2 weighed the same, and the first iPad mini is even lighter at 308 grams. The iPad mini 3 is up to 7.5mm thick, which is thinner than most tablets we've tested, but competitors with the same diagonal from Sony and Samsung are still thinner. In general, this last year's case is still quite compact and does not lose its competitiveness today.

Ports and interfaces - 3.5

In terms of ports and wireless interfaces, Apple iPad mini 3 is not much different from iPad mini 2. Except for the Touch ID fingerprint scanner, in the previous version it was not. On iPad case mini 3 has only two connectors: for headphones and a proprietary Lightning connector. The version with a modem also has a slot with a tray for a Nano-SIM card; the tray can be pulled out with a key from the package or with a paper clip.

Apple iPad mini 3 is equipped with Bluetooth 4.0 modules with A2DP support, in addition there is a Wi-Fi adapter (a / b / g / n) and an A-GPS receiver with GLONASS support. The version with LTE modem supports speeds up to 100 Mbit / s (LTE Cat 3), as mentioned above, Nano SIM cards are used. In our opinion, the set is, in principle, not bad, but in 2014 it is not at all impressive for that kind of money. By the way, iFixit experts, among other things, found an NFC chip in the iPad mini 3, but there was no antenna for it to use it for payment or data transfer.

Performance - 4.0

Like the previous iPad, the iPad mini 3 features the same dual-core Apple A7 processor, clocked at up to 1.3GHz, 1GB random access memory and a PowerVR G6430 GPU. Despite last year's processor, the iPad mini 3 doesn't look like a whipping boy, and in performance tests it scored some of the best 7-8 inch tablets in 2014, both in synthetic tests and in daily use.

In our tests, each of which was carried out several times, the average values for all iterations are indicated. In the Geekbench 3 benchmark, the iPad mini 3 scored well - 2,483 points for the performance of both cores. In browser benchmarks, it showed some of the best results: 440 milliseconds in Sunspider and 5312 in Google Octane 2.0. The graphics chip scores much lower than the iPad Air 2, but comparable to Android tablets - 22.7 fps in T-Rex HD Onscreen C24Z16 by GFXBenchmark, 8.9 fps in Manhattan and 14807 points in 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited. Let's just note that the last result looks not so "premium".

As for everyday use, there are no problems here. You will be able to play most games, although in the most "heavy" ones during active scenes, fps may "sag" a little.

Display - 4.6

New iPad mini 3 is equipped with a 7.9-inch screen with a resolution of 2048 × 1536 pixels, the so-called Retina display with a pixel density of 324 ppi. The screen has an oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating, it will still collect fingerprints, but marks are easily rubbed off. The display supports multi-touch - up to 10 touches at the same time. Touch input accurate, the touchscreen works quickly. In the sun, the display “glares” a little, but the information is still readable.

The maximum brightness is 387 cd / m2, roughly the same as that of its predecessor. The tablet has an average brightness distribution of 87% and a high contrast ratio of 862: 1, unexpectedly higher than the iPad mini 2. Compared to the tablets tested, the device has wide viewing angles, but for a premium tablet it is not much, but the colors look naturally. The color gamut turned out to be narrow, about 70-75% of the sRGB gamut is covered, it is not clear when Apple will solve this issue, after all, this shortcoming is already in the third mini-tablet. However, I must say that the colors themselves look natural and juicy, the display does not "lie" much with the color rendition.

Battery - 4.2

You won't be surprised, but the iPad mini 3 battery performed nearly as well as the iPad mini 2 battery! This is one of the best results in our tests: 4 hours 12 minutes on average. according to three tests in load mode, 18 h 39 min. in the minimum load mode. In these tests, the iPad mini 3 performed better than most tablets. In HD video viewing mode, it was discharged in 9 hours 43 minutes. The battery will probably last for a day, but the competitors of the iPad mini 3 are stepping on their heels and even overtaking, so next time Apple will have to work on the autonomy for its mini-tablet so that it does not go overboard.

Software

The iPad Mini 3 runs iOS 8.1, with a small list of apps such as FaceTime for video calls, calendar, notes and reminders, the iTunes Store, the App Store, and iBooks. In addition, there are Photo Booth apps with a small list of photo effects. There are not many applications, but everything you need can be downloaded from the application store. Despite the old processor, applications run smoothly, everything is well optimized. The only big difference from the iPad mini 2 is Touch ID, a fingerprint scanner that costs $ 100 extra. We checked its work - it recognizes the owner's finger without any problems.

Cameras - 3.5

To our disappointment, the camera situation is the same as in previous versions. The same 5 MP rear camera with Full HD video shooting, no slow motion. Maximum resolution photo - 2592 × 1944 pixels and standard functions: HDR, shooting panoramas and recognizing faces and smiles, in general, everything that almost any camera of everyone can do budget tablet... In addition to the "standard" set, the camera allows you to make continuous and time-lapse shooting. During tests, we found that when shooting video, the camera focuses once at the very beginning, but then it does not focus automatically, even if you switch to something else - everything will be out of focus.

Have front camera resolution of 1.2 megapixels, it is only enough for HD video (720p). However, the camera is fast and loads faster than Android tablets. Note that the camera has become better at shooting in low light, and it is at the level of many 8 MP cameras.

Photo from the tablet camera Apple iPad mini 3 - 3.5

Temperature - 4.4

iPad mini 3 doesn't get too hot, like its predecessor: the maximum temperature at rest was 29.3 degrees, well below average. Under load, the maximum surface temperature of the tablet is 37.0 degrees, which is not very hot, it is comfortable to work with iPad mini 3.

Memory - 5.0

On sale there is Apple version iPad mini 3 with 16/64/128 GB of internal storage. Slots for external card no memory.

Today we will consider the third generation of the most successful tablet in the entire history of the manufacture of this type of device. Apple iPad mini 3 has fewer innovations than its two predecessors, but, no matter how you look, it is the best compact tablet for the next year.

Design

The appearance of the 7-inch tablet almost immediately became a classic, becoming a kind of role model for many brands. In addition, since its very first appearance, the design of the tablet has not changed, the third generation looks the same as the first - the device is enclosed in an aluminum case with narrow frames on the sides of the display and with rounded corners, with a single round key under the screen on the front and a mirrored apple on back cover... In addition to white and gray colors, the tablet will now be produced in gold.

Screen

The tablet received a 7.9-inch Retina display with a resolution of 2048x1536 pixels, pixels - 326 dpi. Everyone knows that the Retina display looks great - the clarity and smoothness of the picture, deep colors and a lot of brightness.

Interface

The device works under the system new iOS 8. At your disposal is a branded application store, cloud storage iCloud, iTunes and iBookstore stores and a set of preinstalled utilities traditional for Apple devices, including Maps, Game Center, Safari browser, FaceTime, iBooks, Notes and others.

Apparatus in operation

The tablet received an A7 processor with 64-bit architecture and an M7 motion coprocessor. The volume of the OP is still the same - 1 GB. Volume options internal storage such: 16, 64 and 128 GB; the 32nd version was abandoned by Apple.

Camera

A camera with a resolution of 5 megapixels is far from the most essential characteristic of a camera. You can safely rely on the tablet when traveling, it copes with the duties of a camera perfectly, making beautiful and clear pictures. Of course, I would like to receive an updated camera - this module has been installed in the tablet for the third generation in a row, but the camera does not seem "old" and is quite suitable in terms of the quality of shooting.

The camera records HD video at 1080p resolution.

The front-facing camera also produces fairly clear photos and also makes high-quality video calls possible.

Wireless networks

The iPad Mini 3 Wi-Fi + Cellular comes with 3G, 2G and 4G support (it has a nano-SIM slot). As for the Wi-Fi, the module works well. The Bluetooth module is also okay.

Autonomy

Apple devices have always been very good in battery life. Nothing has changed, the battery is as powerful (6430 mAh) as in the previous generations, the indicators are still excellent - the manufacturer promises 10 hours of continuous video playback.

Outcomes

So, the tablet is equipped in exactly the same way as its predecessors, only a fingerprint scanner and the possibility of choosing a gold case have been added. For the rest, it's still the same second iPad tablet Mini is almost unanimously voted one of the very best Apple products.

The cost of the tablet starts at 19,490 rubles. with a minimum configuration - with 16 GB of memory and without cellular networks... 16-GB Wi-Fi + Cellular will cost 25,990 rubles, which is almost 4,000 rubles more than it cost previous version in a similar configuration at the beginning of sales.

Video review of the tablet Apple iPad Mini 3

I would not like to almost completely repeat last year's review of the second generation iPad mini - but I would have to repeat it, since the cat cried about the changes in mini 3. And so I decided to speak in the genre of ten facts. Short, clear and fast. Everything you need to know about iPad mini 3. I want to note that the material on the iPad Air 2 will appear next week, and it will not be ten facts.

1. The first change, the Touch ID sensor is used here, you can use a fingerprint to unlock the device, pay in the App Store, iTunes. The design of the sensor here is the same as in the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6, the sensor itself is covered with a sapphire, under it is a switch so that you can feel the pressure. The system works flawlessly, especially the owners of the second generation tablet will appreciate it - pressed it, it immediately appeared on the desktop. No passwords.

2. By the way, Touch ID can also be used in conjunction with other applications. For example, to run Evernote, Amazon, 1Password, Scanner Pro. On this moment about fifteen programs support Touch ID, more and more will be available over time. If you use iPad for work purposes, you will especially need this function, the password can be trite to spy on, this number will not work with a fingerprint. And the point is not even that spies sneak into the office - curious colleagues are worse than scouts.

3. The next change, there was a gold tablet. Looks great, I really liked it - but I would never buy it myself. Because when you look at such a tablet, a mournful gypsy song immediately plays in your head, the sound of a tambourine is heard, a bear growls, red caviar, Russia, a golden iPad is thrown at a sluggish tavern attendant - in general, not the best associations.

4. The dimensions have not changed. And here different thoughts suggest themselves, I used the iPhone 6 Plus for a long time and even got by with a "plus" during the flight to the USA - I watched movies, like on a tablet, very well. Previously, the intermediate device between iPad and iPhone was iPad mini. If you do not look at the price, now the intermediate device may well be the iPhone 6 Plus - all the more, you can put it in your pocket, you can make calls, and stay in touch all the time. But it costs, of course, more. If you build mobile Apple devices according to the ranking, this is the situation - iPhone 5S / 5C (remember, the plastic 5C has not gone anywhere yet), iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad mini of all generations, iPad Air. The line looks more logical than last year, more choice, more room for maneuver for the end user. Want a compact smartphone? Then choose the iPhone 5S or iPhone 6. Something in between a tablet and a smartphone? iPhone 6 Plus. A small travel tablet? iPad mini.

5. A little about prices, in Russia iPad mini 3 costs 19 490, 24 490, 29 490 rubles for versions with 16, 64 and 128 GB memory and Wi-Fi support, models with 4G will cost 25,990, 30,990 and 35,990 rubles. Expensive? Not at all. The new iPad mini is inexpensive, and that's why - no other tablet on the market can offer the user such a convenient way to work with a wide variety of information and such advanced protection. For example, Samsung tablets also have fingerprint protection, but if you've used it, you can probably tell a lot about false positives. The fingerprint sensor in iPad and other tablets is not the same thing at all. Well, we must also say about the aluminum case, an excellent display, a version with 128 GB of memory, a long battery life.

6. About the time of work. The new iPad mini behaves like the old one, and you can count on 10 hours of video playback - just enough to get you to New York.

7. A bit of technical data, a 7.9-inch IPS-display with LED-backlight is used, the resolution is 2048 x 1536 pixels. A7 processor, M7 coprocessor. If you want to read more about TX, I recommend the review on our website. A 5 MP camera is installed, in general, it is still quite good. More Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11a / b / g / n and MIMO, LTE (bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26), UMTS / HSPA / HSPA + / DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM / EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz).

8. iPad mini 3 can be used to talk on the phone - if in one Wi-Fi networks there is also a "friendly" iPhone and the continuity function is enabled. But this is certainly not the same as just using a SIM card to make calls. Now on the test is Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, this device can work like a phone - even if it looks funny when a person speaks on a tablet, but there are no restrictions for the user. I went on vacation, left my smartphone at home, do everything on a tablet - well, why not? Apparently, the ability to talk directly with using iPad will appear in the next generation of tablets.

9. In the United States and the UK, tablets are supplied with Apple SIM, a very interesting experiment by the company. This SIM card is already installed in the devices, in the menu on the tablet you can quickly choose an operator for yourself, or rather, you can quickly choose for yourself tariff plan taste. Imagine how convenient it is, here is a man gathered in Las Vegas for CES. I took an iPad mini 3 with me, chose some AT&T tariff at the airport, made an access point from a tablet - please, work. Flew to another state, chose a different plan. I flew to Europe (so far it works only in the UK), connected there. No need to buy different SIM cards, no need to carry them in a separate hammock, no need to pull out the tray. I'd like to believe that Apple SIM will come to Russia as well - and it will come next year.

10. Should I swap my iPad mini 2 for a third-generation model? Only if you are concerned about protecting your data. It's worth switching from the first generation iPad mini. Well, and you should definitely try mini for all those who are looking for a compact tablet - you are unlikely to find a better one, believe me.
