Xiaomi Mi A1. What to expect from the new flagship? Xiaomi Mi A1: dual camera and "pure" Android What connector does xiaomi mi a1 have

Xiaomi Mi A1 Is a landmark device for the company. For the first time, the Chinese have partnered with Google and released a joint smartphone. Xiaomi in this case is responsible for the hardware, and Google for Android and the most fresh updates for 3 years. It sounds cool, but the smartphone has a lot of nuances. I'll tell you about all in the review.

Since the Russian representative office of Xiaomi ("Smart Orange") does not find the strength to answer my inquiries, I bought the Xiaomi Mi A1 on my own. Moreover, this time, I did it not in China, but here, in Russia. At the same time, I will tell you how the official version of Mi A1 differs from the global one, which can be snatched up by 5-6 thousand cheaper in some online store, such as Aliexpress or Gearbest. Go!

Unpacking

We are greeted by excellent, high-quality and pleasant packaging in all respects. If anything, I took all the photos of the box from under the device on the Mi A1 camera, plus added a little color correction. Why not?

Immediately a nuance! On the back of the cardboard casing, we have a plaque with the main parameters of the device, information about the manufacturer in Russian. It is with this sticker that the official version of the smartphone differs from the one that can be ordered from China.

Found inside USB-C cable and power supply without support fast charging(5V and 2A). No wired headset.

The second difference between the officially sold Xiaomi Mi A1 is that the manual and warranty card are completely in Russian.

Design

The smartphone comes in three colors: completely black, gold and pink. Only the first two colors are sold in Russia. Pink must be obtained independently from the Middle Kingdom. Let it be for now.

I chose black, because the guys in the area will not understand. But seriously, I missed. Better to buy the gold version, as it looks the best. Especially at the back, where the double camera peephole clearly stands out against the background of the golden back. Antenna strips neatly curving along the body add some charm. It all looks like you have in iPhone hands 7 Plus. From afar. Strongly from afar.

The black modification looks boring. Mi A1 in this color is simply lost against the background of its countless fellow smartphones. Our hero is especially similar to.

The smartphone fits well in the hand, but keep in mind that this is still a 5.5-inch shovel. There are devices that, with the same diagonal, have received a more compact body. For example, .

There are three backlit touch buttons under the display. If anything, then the Split View (multi-window) mode is called by long holding the left key.

Accordingly, the fingerprint scanner has moved to the back side. Personally, I like it when the fingerprinting is built into the Home button on the front. But you can live with that too. The main thing is that the scanner is fast and recognizes prints in 10 out of 10 cases.

What is the build quality? I'm not very lucky - back cover in my copy it creaks for some reason, and only when you take the smartphone in your hand. Otherwise, everything is fine.

By the way, the back cover is easily scratched. I wore my device without a cover for only a week, put it on a more or less clean surface, but small scratches still appeared.

Display

Here we have a fairly common 5.5-inch IPS panel. Good, adequate color reproduction, moderate contrast ratio (1000: 1) and fair viewing angles. Only under extreme deflection does a whitish fog appear on the screen.

Yes, I have seen better IPS panels, but believe me, there is not much to criticize the Xiaomi Mi A1 screen for. All the more so if you keep the price in mind.

Nevertheless, I still found one caveat - this is brightness, which has not enough stock. The display looks dull in the sun. And this despite the fact that the brightness level is declared at 450 nits (industry standard). There are no problems in the room.

And there was no section in the settings where you could adjust the temperature of the colors. In smartphones from Xiaomi, such an item is always present, but not in our case. After all, the smartphone does not work on MIUI, but on bare Android 7.

The same can be said about the LED indicator. It glows only white and its behavior is not configurable at all. Those accustomed to customizing MIUI should be aware of this in advance.

And yes! There is an oleophobic coating and it is wonderful.

  • navigation: GPS, Glonass, Beidou

The smartphone lacks NFC, so wireless payment via Android Pay will not start. The latter is especially sad given that our smartphone's main competitor has such support.

Performance

The interface works smartly and without any problems. Mostly. However, lags and barely noticeable brakes do happen. And this is on the purest Android, not overloaded with any software add-ons.

I really hope that the speed of work will be finished in the near future. I'll talk about the stability of the system a little later. Unfortunately, there is something about it.

The smartphone as a whole does a good job with modern 3D games. World of Tanks Blitz runs on high graphics settings, but the frame rate does not exceed 22 FPS. At medium settings, everything is much more fun - at least 40 fps.

Cameras

They say that Mi A1 is almost the best smartphone in terms of photos among classmates. Let's check it out now.

Front-camera

If you are lucky with the lighting, then the selfies will turn out to be quite decent quality. If the sun is already getting ready to dive over the horizon, then get ready to take 5-6 photos at a time. Chances are good that most will be blurry.

In general, the quality of the photo "front camera" we have is average. Even for Xiaomi.

Main cameras

Yes, here we have two modules at once. Here are their characteristics:

  • 12MP OmniVision 12A10 sensor (1 / 2.8 '' sensor size, 26mm wide-angle lens, f / 2.2, 1.25μm pixel size, 4K video recording)
  • 12MP OmniVision 13880 sensor (50mm telephoto lens, f / 2.6 aperture, 1μm dot size)

Photos from the main camera are really interesting. However, to achieve a more or less bearable result, you need to get confused with the exposure (automation does not always adequately assess the lighting). It is also highly desirable to have good lighting around, otherwise the quality of the photo will rapidly begin to decline.

Pointing, shooting, getting a masterpiece - this is not about the Xiaomi Mi A1 camera.

Sometimes the white balance is so buggy that you get these steampunk shots. By the way, they look quite interesting to themselves. And yes, I didn't edit them at all.

HDR doesn't work very badly. Here are a couple of examples with the feature enabled (left) and without it (right).

It is also highly desirable to have good lighting around, otherwise the quality of the photo will rapidly begin to decline.

Taking a more or less sharp shot at night is a problem. You need to take at least 3-4 photos at a time - maybe one will come out sharp. Below are some examples from the camera of the Mi A1 (left) and iPhone 6 (right). It's always interesting to bump your head against the middling from 2017 and the flagship from 2014.

By the way, all examples of photos with Xiaomi cameras We grab the Mi A1 in original resolution.

From the nuances.

The camera does not know how to recognize QR codes, although any other device from Xiaomi does it with ease. And this is really strange, because the camera application here is from MIUI, not "Google".

The slow shutter release is frustrating.

Even if you shoot in normal mode (not HDR), the camera takes photos slowly. And it is advisable at this moment to hold the smartphone very tightly in your hands, because the picture can float even when there is just a little lack of light (on a cloudy day). For HDR shooting you need “stone hands” at all.

One of the main advantages of the Xiaomi Mi A1 is unlimited storage for all photos from a smartphone in the cloud from Google, and without any loss in quality.

If you suddenly doubt in what quality images are uploaded to the cloud, then go to the settings of the "Photos" application, then select the "Startup and synchronization" item and set the desired parameter in the "Photo size" menu. All the frames have loaded in their original quality.

In conclusion, let's compare the photos from the Mi A1 cameras (left) and (right).

Which one did you like best? Write in the comments.

Optical zoom

The main matrix is covered with a wide-angle lens 26 mm. The second is a 50 mm telephoto lens. Accordingly, when you are too lazy to approach the subject with your feet, you can tap on the “1x” icon in the viewfinder and the image will zoom in exactly twice. In fact, the image simply switches to the second module.

I'll tell you right away that a camera with a telephoto lens lags behind the main one in quality. Yes, everything looks good on the smartphone screen. The computer is no longer the same.

Interesting fact. If the ambient light is not enough, then the "optical zoom" will not work - the picture will simply be zoomed in digitally. It is very easy to check this. Close the telephoto lens with your finger and tap on the "1x" icon. If the zoom is working, then there is not enough light and digital zoom has turned on. We go out into the street, do the same procedure and see how switching to the second camera does not work - a finger in the lens interferes.

Bokeh

The smartphone also needs two cameras to blur the background during portrait photography. Automation does this not always successfully, but one out of four or five frames turns out to be bearable. You have to try, try.

A couple of unpleasant moments. The quality of a photo with a bokeh effect will always be lower than in a normal photo. However, for viewing on a smartphone it will do.

Second, if the algorithms "see" a person in the frame, then their skin is automatically smoothed. It becomes porcelain, perfectly flat and you cannot turn off this "beauty".

Video recording

In this regard, the apparatus of stars from the sky is not enough. At all.

There are a lot of problems with video recording: poor detail, complete absence of any stabilization and disgusting sound. Once again, I come across this on smartphones from Xiaomi. In relatively fresh devices, the same problem with sound is present - it gurgles and nothing is heard at all. I had firmware N2G47H.7.10.14.

If anything, here's a link to instructions on how to get rid of these gurgling sounds (Root needed).

Is Pure Android Good?

Let's go in order. First, let's talk about the negative aspects, what you need to be prepared for.

Unfortunately, the stock system lacks a few useful applications... For example, none are installed. file manager... You have to look for your own version in the Play Store, and there, as you know, there is enough garbage with built-in advertising.

Different applications crash periodically. If this were an isolated case, I would not even mention it, but it consistently happens every two days. Moreover, any can fly third party utility... The exception is stock programs.

Quite frankly, the design of "naked" Android is not to my liking. It's too simple and uncomplicated. Yes, minimalism is good, but this is overkill. And yes, this is exclusively my subjective opinion.

MIUI looks better, not to mention its very high functionality and customization.

Here's a simple example. How to enable battery percentage indicator on Xiaomi Mi A1? A non-trivial question for those who have never encountered the Android OS in its original form.

To turn on the percentage indicator, do the following:

  • lower the notification curtain
  • hold your finger on the gear icon for a few seconds until vibration
  • the System UI Tuner item appears in the smartphone settings
  • in the "Status bar" section we find "Always show charge percentage" and get the following.

Now about the pros.

The smartphone has no problem with notifications. All notifications from any application arrive on time, which cannot be said about MIUI, where this is a real headache that is not completely curable.

What is the definite plus of Android over MIUI is its support. It is promised that all software updates will come straight from Google - this time. Mi A1 will receive them one of the first, almost on a par with its own devices of the series - these are two. And thirdly, the promised support period is 3 years. In general, you buy a smartphone, in which new features will appear over the next three years, and all bugs will be promptly eliminated. Well, isn't it lovely?

And I also really liked that the system interface is deployed in landscape orientation... This applies to the main screen and the entire system in general.

Sound quality

There is only one speaker in the device - at the bottom end, to the right of USB-C ports... In terms of volume, it is above average - that's good. But the quality is confident average. It is better not to put complex compositions on the call, well, or not to turn the volume of notifications to the maximum. No wheezing, but somehow, something ... not very much.

The official website states: "The amplifier with a power of 10 watts, combined with the advanced Dirac HD Sound algorithm, provides powerful sound and deep bass ...". Holding my breath, I inserted AKG N30

Personally, I did not notice any difference, and as you know in "proven circles", iPhones do not sound right at all.

Seriously, the sound of Xiaomi Mi A1 through headphones is of high quality, but nothing stands out against the background of competitors.

Autonomy

A 3,080 mAh battery was installed in the smartphone. There is a reason to be wary, because the hardware of the device, though not the hottest on the market, is still quite demanding on energy. However, you can breathe out with relief.

The smartphone lasts a day and a half during normal use (two SIM cards, constant background data transfer, 4-5 hours of screen).

A very decent battery life.

Outcome

What is smartphone Xiaomi Mi A1?

From Xiaomi, here is the hardware itself, wallpapers, notification sounds and a couple of service applications. All other software, optimization, updates - everything from Google. And this is the key advantage of the apparatus.

The main competitor of the Mi A1 is the one that has been on sale since the beginning of the year. And here's my advice.

If you need wireless payment (Android Pay), then choose the solution from Honor. If you need the longest possible support from the manufacturer (update, always the freshest and most up-to-date software), then we will stop at Mi A1. These two devices simply have no competitors in their price segment.

And Xiaomi Mi A1 is the first smartphone from the company that I would recommend buying here in Russia at the official price of 16,990 rubles. If you see the price tag above - pass by, because there is always an offer that is a little more profitable.

Buy Xiaomi Mi A1 in China, of course, you can. In this case, the smartphone will cost about 12,500 rubles. Yes, the difference is significant, however, buying here, you also pay for a full warranty in case of any problems. Is it worth more than four thousand? Let everyone decide for himself, but personally, in this case, I am for the officials.

Only now has it gained unprecedented popularity, despite the fact that the company offered the best hardware for the most affordable prices not one year in a row. But, for those who are not in the know, it is worth saying: today the brand has acquired an official status in Russia, which means that the prices for the manufacturer's gadgets will sooner or later approach the prices of A-brands. And yet, the manufacturer still pleases fans of budget products with relatively affordable solutions. A great example is smartphone Xiaomi Mi A1, which is a good modern smartphone in a stylish design and has a dual-module camera and at the same time is sold at a relatively affordable price for such parameters.

Apple again?

Representatives of the company praised the novelty with might and main, emphasizing the ergonomic and stylish design. Meanwhile, in the outlines Xiomi Mi A1 you can see the same phone Apple iPhone 7 Plus, which, although not an exact copy of it, is definitely a borrowing. It's all to blame for the shape of the front panel, the proportions of the case, the size of the display, similarly made plastic inserts located on the metal cover. Even a dual-module camera will mislead an inexperienced user: it seems that this was the calculation. Perhaps the only caveat lies in the fingerprint scanner, which is located not in the home key, but on the back.

As already noted, this is not a complete copy, but the workmanship on high level... Only in the hands of experienced reviewers will there be a catch, indicating that this is not an Apple novelty: the camera protrusion is framed by a mediocre plastic insert. And the joint between the glass is not so smooth, but these are trifles. According to the results, for a relatively low price, you can get a smartphone that is decently made based on the Apple flagships. In addition, here we are talking about black, gold and pink versions. Whatever it was, we figured out the design, but what about the filling?

Technical component

In terms of filling, this is not a self-sufficient device. The Xiaomi Mi A1 is essentially the same Xiaomi Mi 5X that was introduced in the summer. But the advantages include clean operating system similar to that used in gadgets for the developing world. In total, the technical merits include:

  • 5.5-display with full-length LTPS technology;
  • Economical Snapedragon 625;
  • 4 GB of RAM;
  • Two-module sensor;
  • Pure Android One.

It is noteworthy that in addition to Android 7.1.2 Nougat, an update to Android 8 will also be available, if, of course, you believe the manufacturer.

Focal length

The focal length indicates the distance in millimeters from the sensor to the optical center of the lens. Equivalent focal length (35mm) is the focal length of a mobile device camera, equated to the focal length of a 35mm full-frame sensor, at which the same angle of view will be achieved. It is calculated by multiplying the real focal length of the mobile device camera by the crop factor of its sensor. The crop factor can be defined as the ratio between the diagonals of a 35mm full-size sensor and a mobile device sensor.

Just the other day, the Xiaomi company presented new smartphone dubbed the Xiaomi Mi A1. Of course, the mere fact of the next presentation of another phone from this Chinese manufacturer hardly surprises you, but believe me, this model deserves special attention.

To understand why A1 goes beyond ordinary phones, let's remember what is the main focus of the company. Perhaps you will agree that this is a production budget smartphones, among which the unconditional leadership is held by the third generation of Redmi. Xiaomi flagships are also quite good, but not that business card companies. But the "state employees" - this is the same unconditional trump card. And, oddly enough, in this segment we have not seen anything new from Xiaomi for over a year. Someone even thought that something went wrong with the Chinese, and competitors would soon take over the budget segment. But it was not there. Xiaomi Mi A1 is a clear confirmation of this. This is the first smartphone from Xiaomi on a pure Android system, which has decent technical characteristics, a nice appearance and reasonable price... What else do you need to be happy?

Let's take a closer look at the new product and decide why you should get it.

Refusal from MIUI

So, for the first time, a Xiaomi smartphone appears before us without using the MIUI software shell. Someone will say that this is a minor and insignificant difference, but in reality everything is much deeper. This is a huge step forward for Xiaomi and Google, in cooperation with which the new product was born.

Under almost any article describing a particular Xiaomi smartphone, you will find an angry comment from a user whose firmware began to wildly slow down and lag after the update. And sometimes before him. Either the battery starts to discharge inadequately quickly, then the device categorically does not catch the network. Of course, every year they try to improve the shell, but it is catastrophically far from ideal.

The abandonment of MIUI is evidence that Xiaomi is working on bugs. Few people know that the Chinese sell their smartphones almost at cost, making money on products under MIUI. Smartphones in this case act only as a way to distribute the system and applications for it. There is even a special Mi Store, where users leave a lot of money every now and then. Taking this into account, it is possible to reduce the price of the phones themselves, automatically becoming the leaders in the budget segment of the mobile gadgets market.

For Google, cooperation with Xiaomi is fundamentally important. On this moment we are already working with HTC, but the smartphones of this company are not at all as affordable to the consumer as the Xiaomi models. Therefore, through cooperation with Google, the Chinese will delight buyers who are tired of lagging MIUI, and Google itself will expand its presence in the market. Everyone is happy.

As for the Android systems One installed on the Xiaomi Mi A1, it completely copies the system already familiar to us with the Google Pixel. Already at the presentation, the manufacturer announced that by the end of autumn the firmware will be updated over the air to Android 8.0. Recall that the owners of gadgets on MIUI only received the seventh version of Android in the summer, so they will have to wait for the G8 for a very long time.

Specifications and comparison with Mi 5X and Redmi Note 4X

If you look at the technical characteristics of the Xiaomi Mi A1, then the comparison of the model with the previously released Mi 5X and Redmi Note 4X immediately suggests itself. For a better understanding, we first give the parameters A1.

5.5-inch display diagonal with Full resolution HD at 401 ppi. Matrix type - IPS. Processor model - Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 with graphics accelerator Adreno 506. RAM 4 GB, built-in 64 GB. On Antutu, such a device gives out 65 thousand "parrots". The main camera is double, 12 megapixels for each module. There is 4-axis image stabilization, 2x optical zoom and dual flash. Front camera resolution 5 megapixels with aperture f / 2.0. The phone supports two SIM cards and has a fingerprint scanner. The body is made of aluminum and tempered glass... The main colors of the back panel are pink, gold and black. The battery has a 3080 mAh battery, the fast charging function is present.

Differences from Mi 5X and Redmi Note 4X are really minimal. The 4X has a single camera, unlike its two brothers, and the 5X has only 32 GB of internal memory. The Note 4X has an even better battery (4010 mAh), but in practice the difference is not particularly noticeable. The devices are almost identical in weight - 165g each for Mi 5X and Redmi Note 4X versus 168g for Xiaomi Mi A1. So what's the fundamental difference if you don't take into account the operating system? First of all, in positioning:

  1. Xiaomi Mi 5X is a gadget targeted at the Chinese market. Its technical characteristics almost completely duplicate those of the hero of today's review, except, of course, the international registration and the Andoid One system.
  2. Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X is distinguished by the absence of a dual camera (but the main resolution is 13 megapixels) and a slightly larger battery. The main thing is that it costs less than two analogs, because it belongs to the Redmi budget line.
  3. Xiaomi Mi A1 is a phone with a clear visual imitation of the iPhone 7 Plus. The all-metal case with a pure Android 7.1.2 system is already a claim for success. And it will be sold not only in China, but also in about two dozen countries.

What can we say about characteristics of Xiaomi Mi A1? This is quite a solid smartphone, which can be attributed not even to the budget, but to the middle class. Heating is extremely rare here, the processor is productive. Although the performance in synthetic tests is not outrageous, the smartphone can handle almost all modern games, even if not every one on maximum settings graphics. The presence of the Android One system is encouraging and makes you believe that braking is a thing of the past. The same is suggested by the 4 GB RAM estimate.

The metal case looks very expensive and flagship. Of course, the device falls short of the level of Xiaomi Mi6, but this is a completely different price segment.

Release date in Russia and price

The presentation is good, but we are more interested in the specific release date of the smartphone in Russia. It is already known that from September 12, the device will go on sale in India, and the price for it will be 15 thousand rupees. In rubles, this is about 12 thousand. But do not rush to rejoice - for sure we will get a novelty with a big price tag. We do not recommend focusing on less than 15 thousand rubles. There is no exact data on the arrival of A1 in Russia yet, but we are expecting a new product in early October.

conclusions

To summarize, we will briefly summarize the advantages and disadvantages of the Xiaomi Mi A1. Among the pluses:

  • Dual camera;
  • Acceptable price;
  • Using a clean Android system.

Among the disadvantages:

  • Too blatant copying of the iPhone 7 Plus design;
  • Battery reserve is not very large.

The smartphone, in any case, deserves the attention of those who are not ready to shell out a tidy sum for a device with modern technical characteristics and strive to get a device with a solid camera, which Xiaomi has not pleased for a long time. As usual, looking happily at the price tag, we definitely recommend buying a gadget. The main thing is to wait until October.

Usually, companies that can be considered start-up smartphone manufacturers are starting to cooperate closely with Google. However, the partnership with the world famous Xiaomi has moved to such a level that both giants have decided to jointly release a smartphone within the framework of Android programs One. As a result, a beautiful and high-quality Xiaomi Mi A1 camera phone appeared.

Other smartphones of the Android One series:

Equipment

The box with the smartphone contains: charger, USB - USB Type-C cable, instructions, warranty card and a clip for removing the SIM card slot and memory card.

Design and ergonomics

The Xiaomi Mi A1 smartphone outwardly completely repeats its predecessor - Xiaomi Mi 5x.

The body of the device is made of metal and contains only two small plastic inserts necessary for stable operation in wireless networks.

At the top of the front of the smartphone, there is a front-facing camera, sensors, and a voice speaker.

Under the display there are three control buttons: menu, home and back. If desired, the action of each of the buttons can be reassigned at your discretion.

The back of the smartphone houses a dual camera, dual LED flash and a fingerprint scanner.

On the upper edge there is an infrared port for household appliances as well as a noise canceling microphone.

As for the bottom edge, here are: a 3.5 mm headphone port, USB Type-C port for charging and connecting to a PC, the main microphone and speaker.

Quite a familiar arrangement of elements on the side faces.

On the right there is a power button and a volume rocker, and on the left is a tray for a SIM card and a memory card.

It is known that the novelty will be available in three colors: black, gold and rose gold.

Display

The smartphone is equipped with a large 5.5-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The screen is bright enough and has great viewing angles.

The touch panel supports up to ten touch points at the same time.

The screen is covered with 2.5D glass, which means that using the smartphone will be as pleasant as the budget hit of 2017 -.

Performance

The novelty received an 8-core Snapdragon 625 processor with a frequency of 2 GHz, 4 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of internal memory. The graphics are processed by the Adreno 506 processor.

Most games will perform well. For example, with Asphalt 9 and Modern Combat 5, the device does not experience any problems.

The only real drawback of such a phone is overheating. If Xiaomi used its own thermoregulation algorithms, then the situation would be better, but here - pure Android.

In any case, if you are not an avid gambler, then you will not have any problems with the Xiaomi Mi A1. The maximum measured case temperature is 42 degrees, which is quite acceptable for such devices.

The new product has a dedicated 10-watt audio amplifier that allows you to use even the most serious studio headphones with your smartphone.

In the AntuTu test, the device gains 63298 points.

Battery

The Xiaomi Mi A1 has a 3080 mAh battery. From a practical point of view, this is quite enough for a full-time working day, but using special treatment saving energy, the battery life can be increased slightly.

Charging is carried out through a modern USB port Type-C, but there is no support for Quick Charge technology.

Camera

Xiaomi Mi A1 is equipped with three camera modules. The front camera has a resolution of 5 MP, and the dual main ones - 12 MP each. At the same time, the main modules have different focal lengths (26 and 50 mm), which made it possible to equip the camera with 2x optical zoom.

Using the portrait mode, in which two camera modules are involved at once, you can achieve a good programmed background blur (bokeh) effect, which, on a cursory examination, almost completely repeats the operation of SLR cameras.

Sample photos on Xiaomi Mi A1

In general, in good lighting, the photos are excellent in both normal and portrait modes.

However, this cannot be said when shooting in the dark. Like most other smartphones, the Xiaomi Mi A1 will take longer to focus and the quality of photos will deteriorate.

Stock Android on Mi smartphone

The main difference between MI A1 and other Xiaomi smartphones is the lack of a proprietary MIUI shell.

Only 3 applications will remain from the base assembly: Mi Remote, Mi Store and Feedback. Everything else on the phone is pure Android 7.1.2.

The "Camera" application has also been changed, since it is necessary to support the operation of the dual main module.

Launching a smartphone on pure Android allows you to free up additional funds for using more powerful processor... As a result, both the system and the applications will run faster.
