Naturally, each of the species has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it is certainly impossible to evaluate them as unconditionally good or undeniably bad. In this article, we will try to understand a little about the operation of an automatic transmission, paying special attention to some of its components, or rather, the so-called gearbox satellites.

What are transmission satellites?

In automotive practice, the concept of "satellite" means one of the elements, also called a planetary gear. From a constructive point of view, this is a planetary gear equipped with a movable axis of rotation. As a rule, this part is located at the junction with the sun gear. The sun gear is the central element around which the gears rotate. Thanks to this design, the principle of operation of the satellite resembles our solar system, around which the planets revolve, hence the name of the transmission - planetary.

The planetary gear is the most important part of the gearbox, because it is she who provides the entire range of working relationships of the automatic transmission, and the rest of the devices only help its high-quality functioning.

In our time, this type has become widespread not only in the automotive world, but also in everyday human life. For example, the planetary gear is the basis of many electric screwdrivers.

In an automatic car box, as a rule, there are two such gears that are combined into one component. This includes the sun gear (located in the center), carrier and ring gear. Each component can play the role of an input or output gear, or even be blocked. The gear ratio is determined by the function selection of each component. Such a system is present on many automatic transmissions and is considered the most durable, since due to the slight activity of the teeth, they rarely fail. In addition, the planetary gear is simple and compact, which allows for smoother gear changes, avoiding gaps in the power transmission of the vehicle's power unit.

Replacing the transmission pinion

When cracks appear on the differential gears (including the satellites) or the teeth begin to crumble, this is a sure sign that the specified element must be replaced. In case of minor damage to the sliding surfaces, the existing defect can be eliminated by grinding with fine-grained sandpaper, followed by polishing.

When replacing the gearbox satellite, a series of sequential steps must be performed. First, unscrew the bolts securing the driven gear of the final drive, with which it is attached to the differential box. The relative position of the box and gear should be noted. Then, install some kind of stop under the gear and press the differential box out of it.

A hammer and a soft metal drift through which blows will be applied will help to complete this task. Further, using a beard, they knock out the fixing pin of the axis of the satellites and take it out of the box. Now, when it is in your hands, you can easily remove the axis of the satellites, and after it, turning the gears of the differential, remove the satellites themselves from the box, along with side gears and support washers. Inspect the working surfaces of the details of the teeth of the satellites, splines and teeth of the side gears. If the theory about the strong wear of their working surfaces was confirmed and you noticed that the teeth really began to crumble, then it is better not to postpone the replacement procedure.

At this stage, all that is needed is to replace the failed parts, new elements and assemble everything in reverse order.

The principle of operation of the satellites in the gearbox

To understand the principle of operation of the gearbox satellites, we will consider it in more detail. The functioning of the automatic transmission is ensured by the work of two main components - fluid coupling and already mentioned planetary gear. The fluid coupling is presented in the form of two paddle wheels, which are placed in a single housing filled with special oil. One of the wheels - pumping, connected to the crankshaft of the engine, and the second - turbine, directly interacts with the transmission.

When the impeller begins to rotate, the oil flows that are expelled help spin the turbine wheel, allowing a 1:1 ratio of torque to be transmitted. In the case of a car, this option is completely unsuitable, because here it is necessary that the torque could change over a wide range.

Therefore, taking into account this fact, an additional wheel was installed between the pump and turbine wheels - a reactor wheel, capable of adapting to the operating modes of the machine, which is expressed either in its rotation or in immobility. In a stationary state, the reactor increases the flow rate of the working fluid that circulates between the wheels, and the higher the speed of its movement, the greater the impact on the turbine wheel.

Thus, on the turbine wheel increases, that is, we influence its transformation. Due to this, a device with three wheels can no longer be called a hydraulic clutch, but a torque converter.

However, he is not able to completely transform the rotation speed within the required limits. In addition, to ensure the movement of the car in reverse, it is also beyond its power. That is why, such a device is supplemented with a set of separate planetary gears with different gear ratios. From the outside, it may look as if several single-stage gearboxes were placed in one common housing.

planetary gear- This is a mechanical system that consists of several gears - satellites, rotating around the central gear. All together, the pinion gears are fixed by the planet carrier, and the outer ring gear is internally meshed with the planetary gears. The satellites fixed on the carrier rotate around the central gear, and the outer gear moves around the satellites. The difference in gear ratios is achieved by fixing different parts relative to each other.

The control system is responsible for shifting gears, which was originally completely hydraulic, but in the modern world, electronics came to the rescue.

But why, in an automatic transmission, is it the planetary gear that is most often used? Can you try using shafts with gears attached to them (as in a mechanical box)? The fact is that the described type of transmission is more compact and provides fast, and most importantly smooth speed switching, without a break in the power transmission of the motor. Moreover, due to the transfer of load by several satellites, the stress of the teeth is reduced, which ensures a relatively long service life of the planetary gears.

In a single version of such a transmission, the torque is transmitted through its two elements: one of which is the leading one, and the second is the driven one. The third constituent element remains stationary.

A two-stage planetary gear consists of two combined gears. It consists of one ring gear (always out), two sun gears and two sets of planet gears. The location of the satellites in the carrier is made in such a way that one is placed below the second and does not mate with the ring gear, connecting only with another satellite, through which the specified connection is achieved. The smaller gears mate exclusively with the smaller sun gear, while the larger gears mate with the larger gear as well as the smaller pinion gears.

Advantages and disadvantages of using planetary gears in a gearbox

The use of planetary mechanisms in the gearbox has a number of advantages, among which are:

- relatively smaller dimensions of the transmission;

High reliability of work (performance is maintained even in case of loss of several teeth of the central wheels);

High efficiency with relatively large gear ratios;

Absence of transverse loads on the main shafts;

The possibility of disconnecting the shaft of the power unit from the transmission, of course, only if the clutches of the transmission box are used (in this case, the gearbox simultaneously acts as the main clutch);

Relatively high gear shift speed, which significantly increases the average pace of the vehicle.

However, along with the advantages, there are also some "cons" of using a planetary gear in a gearbox. The main ones are the need for an increased level of manufacturing accuracy, which is explained by the presence of redundant links (“extra” satellites), and a sharp decrease in efficiency when working with large gear ratios.

Often, those planetary gears, which include epicyclic gears, have a relatively higher level of efficiency than those that consist only of external gears. For this reason, in planetary gearboxes, the simplest planetary gear sets with an epicycle are used. The number of shifts in one row, as a rule, does not exceed three, which greatly simplifies the clutch and brake control system. In addition, the number of planetary gears of one gearbox also, most often, does not exceed three.

The presence of features in the design and calculation of such gears is associated with the presence of excessive kinematic links (satellites). The maximum possible number of satellites in one row is limited by the neighborhood condition, which states that their number must be such that they do not touch each other.

True, in reality, the number of satellites rarely exceeds six, which is explained by the difficulty of evenly distributing the load between them in the case of a large number of them. The second necessary condition for the existence and normal functioning of the planetary gear set is the observance of the condition of alignment, or rather the alignment of the central wheels, carrier and epicycle. In the case of a simple planetary gear set, such a condition is expressed in the equality of the interaxal distances of the engagement of the sun wheel and the satellite, as well as the engagement of the satellite and the epicycle.

The branching of the power flow during the transmission of power loads through satellites requires certain measures to be taken to ensure the uniform distribution of incoming loads between all satellites. Among the main reasons for the lack of such uniformity, the following are distinguished: inaccuracies made in the manufacture of gears; different center distance of satellites; misalignment of the geometry of the axes of the satellites (the axes of the satellites and the main transmission axis are not parallel to each other), etc.

In the absence of ensuring a uniform distribution of the load, the discrepancy in its value, for some satellites, can reach 70%. Equalization of the incoming load between all satellites can be achieved in one of the following ways:
