Booting USB flash drive 10 UEFI how to run. The loading flash drive UEFI GPT or UEFI MBR in RUFUS. After successfully installing the utility, go to writing an image to our flash drive

In recent years, the release of computers has begun on which the outdated BIOS initial I / O system has changed motherboards with a fundamentally new type of firmware of a long-term storage device. This type has an abbreviated name UEFI and has a graphical interface similar to Windows, a more resistant duplication system and restore loading data, internal anti-virus protection and the ability to use a computer mouse. It was required due to an increase in the production of hard drives with a volume of over two terabytes and an enhanced partition type (GPT) that are not supported by BIOS. To administer the loader, the built-in UEFI-BOOT utility is applied, resembling the BIOS structure and significantly accelerating the launch of the laptop or stationary computer. When installing Windows 10 on a UEFI computer, a USB media adapted to upgraded loading is used.

UEFI setup before installing Windows 10 from flash card

UEFI is a graphical interface that is responsible for the preloading environment of the operating system.

UEFI is inherently replacing the outdated basic BIOS I / O system, which is not successful in computer technologies. The world does not stand still, but moves forward with seven-year steps, so it's time to part with the old proven "friend, which has repeatedly helped in the event of various problems. Created in 2005 and improved over the past ten years "Expandable Embedded Software Interface" Much more complies with the requirements of the modern hardware of computers. The need for its implementation has arisen for a long time, and now all new models of personal computers are issued with the installed UEFI.

Launching a laptop or desktop computer UEFI-BOOT bootloader Similar to BIOS starts start when the computer is turned on to running Windows 10. With its support, all components and modules and modules are surveyed, which determines their readiness to work, and then the Windows 10 license code is checked. , not allowing viruses to change the bootloader and install pirated copies of Windows 10, can be located in the microcircuit of the long-term storage device built into the motherboard, in the hidden area of \u200b\u200bthe hard drive or its own network storage. Managing and debugging UEFI is elementary to use and adapted to create maximum user convenience.

If you have an idea of \u200b\u200bdebugging BIOS, problems with the UEFI setup will not arise:

After performing such an action algorithm, you can start installing Windows 10.

Conversion of the MBR drive in the GPT drive

Before converting the MBR disk to the GPT disk, reboot the entire information block to the removableflash card because all the data will be. After conversion, the entire information block is overwritten back to the hard drive.

To convert the hard drive with MBR-partitions in GPT sections, two methods are used:

  1. Using the interpreter diskpart.exe:
  2. With the help utility "Disk Management":

It is absolutely optionally to convert a hard drive when installing Windows 10. Just turn off the UEFI parameter "Safe Load" and install the "ten" from a conventional flash drive. All the usefulness of the GPT table is that it supports drives with a volume of over two terabytes, therefore, if the disk is less volume, it does not make sense to transform it.

Creating a UEFI flash card for installing Windows 10

To install Windows 10 from the flash card, you must first assign a bootable priority in UEFI. There is a choice of primary loading for both the hard drive with the MBR-partitions and the hard drive with the GPT table. To assign a priority in UEFI, the "Download Priority" block is transmitted and a flash card with Windows 10 installation files is displayed.

Creating a bootable flash card supporting UEFI

In cases where the bootable flash card for Windows 10 is created in the MediaCreationTool program, Microsoft Corporation Product, FAT32 File Placement Table Structure is automatically formed. The program simply does not offer any other options, immediately making the universal flash card. Using it, you can install "dozens" on standard hardwore with BIOS or UEFI. There is no difference.

If the computer is integrated on the computer that supports the UEFI interface, only media formatted according to the FAT32 standard is allowed to implement Windows 10.

There is another option to create a universal flash card using the Console of the Command Line Administrator. The algorithm of actions in this case will be like this:

  1. Run the "Run" service through the "Standard" services in the Start button menu.
  2. Dial the following commands and confirm them with the Enter key:
  3. Download from the Microsoft website with the ISO-way "dozens".

    Double-click the image file, opening it and simultaneously connecting to the virtual drive.

    Having allocating all files and image directories, copy them by pressing the "Copy" button.

    Insert everything into the free area of \u200b\u200bthe flash card.

    Copy the files on the free space of the flash drive

    On this process of forming a universal boot flash card completed. You can start installing "dozens".

    Removable disk prepared for installation Windows 10

The created universal flash card will be bootable for both computers with a basic BIOS I / O system and for those where the UEFI is integrated.

Creating a flash card only for computers with MBR sections that support UEFI

A quick creation of a bootable flash card for Windows 10, installed on a computer with support for UEFI, provides for the use of third-party software. One of these programs is RUFUS. It is widespread enough among users and has proven itself well. Its main disadvantage is the impossibility of creating a universal boot flash card. Does not provide for installation on the hard drive. Allows you to perform a wide range of operations:

  • carry out flashing BIOS chip;
  • generate a bootable flash card using the ISO image of "dozens" or systems such as Linux;
  • apply on devices with an unidentified operating system;
  • conduct low-level formatting.

To generate a boot flash card using RUFUS, software has been previously downloaded from the developer's site.

When forming a flash card for a computer that supports UEFI, with a hard drive having the MBR sections, the following procedure:

Creating a flash card only for computers with GPT table supporting UEFI

When forming a flash card for a computer that supports UEFI, with a hard drive having a GPT boot table, you need to apply the following procedure:

The RUFUS program is constantly being improved and updated by the manufacturer. The new version of the program can always be obtained on the official developer website.

In order not to arise problems with the creation of bootable media, you can resort to a more efficient recovery option "Dozens". To do this, install the system you need to spend from Microsoft. At the end of the installation, the system itself will propose to create an emergency recovery vehicle. Specify in the selection of media flash card and wait for the end of creating a copy. For any failures, recover system parameters without deleting documents and installed applications. In this case, it will not be necessary to repeatedly activate the system product, which interferes with the user constantly pop-up reminders.

Standard errors that occur when installing Windows 10 on the GPT disk

When installing on a hard drive with GPT sections of the Windows Last Generation Family Operating Systems - versions 7, 8 and 10 - there are problems associated with incorrectly selected settings for the installation.

The first error is the user attempt to install the 32-bit version of Windows 10, which is incompatible with GPT disks. As a consequence, UEFI enters the installation restriction and stops writing files to a hard drive. You can correct this error using when installing Windows 10 64-bit version that is perceived by UEFI.

The second error is an attempt to install on a Windows 10 computer when the UEFI is turned off. To enable it, you need to set the desired parameters for the bootloader. Depending on the manufacturer, the interface of the basic operating system may differ, but in any version of the UEFI they are present.

To enable UEFI mode, you need to set the correct parameters for the bootloader

To enable UEFI mode, follow a number of actions.

For this case, installation will be made only 64 bit systems.

Also, during the installation process, the Secure Boot and Fast Boot features must be disabled in parameters for UEFI. Then they can be activated again.

We connect your flash drive and run the RUFUS utility.

In the RUFUS window, you will need to set such parameter values:

  • Device: Here it is necessary to select an option with a USB drive (after that it is formatted and the data that is there will be forever lost, such a factor should be taken into account);
  • For the interface type and type, select the option with GPT for PCs that have a UEFI;
  • As a file system, you must select FAT32;
  • The size for the cluster is left with a standard value, i.e. 4096 bytes;
  • If you wish, you can specify any volume label;
  • To format, you need to check the checkboxes on the following parameters: Fast formatting, creating an extended tag and a while for the device.

Further choose the option of creating a bootable media - here you need to select an ISO disk image. After that, click on the icon in the form of a disk and specify the location of the image from Windows 10 (only 64-bit variants are suitable). And then, mark the item for the standard installation.

3) Now you can click on the "Start" button and formatting with further recording of all data on the USB flash drive.

After that, Windows 10 on the flash drive will be ready for use.

If there is no UEFI, and there is only standard bios

As in the past example, connect the USB flash drive and then run the RUFUS utility.

In the program, you must specify such parameter values:

  • Where the "device" is chosen a USB drive;
  • For a partition and type of interface, choose the option with MBR for PCs with BIOS or UEFI-CSM;
  • As a file system, use NTFS;
  • Parameters for cluster sizes Leave with a standard value, 4096 bytes;
  • If you wish, you can specify any volume label;
  • To format it, you must select such parameter values \u200b\u200band set flags on the contrary: quick formatting, creating an extended tag and icon for the device, checkbox near the bootable carrier.

Select an ISO-image version, then click on the disk icon and specify the location of the image with Windows 10 (here you can already choose any version as 324-bit). After that, you set the value of the standard system installation.

3. We press the "Start" button with the completion step. The program will ask you to confirm the formatting of the media. After confirmation, for some time, the utility will create a bootable flash drive.

When everything is ready, you can proceed to the testing of the bootable media.

METHOD 2. Using Windows USB / DVD DOWNLOAD TOOL

This utility allows you to record a flash drive solely for Windows 10, and the carrier itself will only work with BIOS. UEFI support - no.

Required components for writing flash drives:

  • Disk image with Windows 10, having an extension.iso;
  • The current version of Windows USB / DVD Download Tool (better recently loaded with);
  • USB flash drive, which has a volume of at least 4 gigabytes.

During the installation of this utility, sometimes an error occurs. Its content speaks of a shortage of Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. What to fix this Open the Control Panel and go to the Programs and Components section. Follow the link on the main components of the system. Then check the box near Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.

After successfully installing the utility, go to writing an image to our flash drive

The first step must be connected to the USB flash drive and run the Windows USB / DVD DOWNLOAD TOOL program;

In the program window, click on the Browse view button and in the operating window that opens, we find and select an image from Windows 10. After that, click "Next";

Next, you will need to select a recording device, press USB Device;

Now you will need to find through the conductor connected to the flash drive, and choose it. Then click on Being Copying;

Then the window will appear asking you to confirm the cleaning of the media. Click on Erase USB Device. And in the next window confirm the formatting of the flash drive;

I mentioned the free program RUFUS, in. Among other things, using RUFUS you can make a UEFI bootable flash drive, which can be useful when creating a USB with Windows 8.1 (8).

In this material it will be clearly shown exactly how to use this program and briefly described why in some cases its use will be preferable than the performance of the same tasks using WinsetUpFromusb, Ultraiso or other similar software. Additionally :.

Download the latest version of RUFUS you can download free from the official website of the developer https://rufus.ie

As mentioned above, the program does not require installation: it will start with the interface in the operating system language and its main window looks like in the picture below.

All fields to fill out do not require special explanations, you need to specify:

  • Device - Future boot flash drive
  • Scheme of the section and type of system interface - in our case GPT with UEFI
  • File system and other formatting parameters
  • In the "Create a boot disk" field, click on the disk icon and specify the path to the ISO image, I try with the original way Windows 8.1
  • The "Create Extended Label and Device Icon" mark adds the device icon and other information to the autorun.inf file on the flash drive.

After all the parameters are specified, click the "Start" button and expect until the program prepare the file system and does not copy files to the USB flash drive with the GPT section for UEFI. I can say that this is really quite quickly in comparison with what had to be observed when using other programs: Feelings, the speed of the approximate is equal to the transfer rate of USB files.

If you have any questions on the use of RUFUS, as well as the additional features of the program, I recommend to see the FAQ section, the link to which you will find on the official website.

What settings should be made before you begin installing Windows 10, will depend on which version of BIOS uses your motherboard and which type of hard disk is installed in the computer. Focusing on this data, you can create the correct installation media and competently change the parameters of the BIOS or UEFI BIOS.

  • MBR is a disk that has a bar in volume - 2 GB. If this memory size is exceeded, all unnecessary megabytes will remain in the reserve unused, it will be impossible to distribute them between the disk partitions. But the benefits of this type include support for both 64-bit and 32-bit systems. Therefore, if you have a single-core processor that supports only a 32-bit OS, you can only use MBR;
  • the GPT disk does not have such a small restriction in the amount of memory, but it can only be installed on it only the 64th bit system, and not all processors support such a bit. Installing the GPT disk system can only be made if there are a newer version of the BIOS - UEFI. If the board installed in your device does not support the desired version, this marking will not suit you.

To find out what mode your disk is currently running, you need to go through the following steps:

  1. Expand the "Run" window by plugging the Win + R buttons combination.

    Open the "Run" window by closing Win + R

  2. Use the DiskMGMT.msc command to go to the standard disk management program and partitions.

    We execute the DiskMGMT.msc. command

  3. Expand the disk properties.

    Open the hard disk properties

  4. In the window that opens, click on the Tomas tab and, if all the strings are empty, use the "Fill" button to fill it.

    Press the "Fill" button

  5. In the section "section of the section" specified the information we need - the type of hard disk breakdown.

    We look at the value of the line "Style section"

How to change the hard disk type

You can independently change the type of hard disk with the MBR on the GPT or vice versa, resorting to the built-in Windows tools, but provided that it is possible to delete the main disk section - the system on which the operating system itself is installed. It can be erased only in two cases: if the disk to be transformed is connected separately and is not involved in the operation of the system, that is, it is installed on another hard disk, or the process of installing a new system occurs, and the old one can be deleted. If the disk is connected separately, then you will fit the first way - through drives control, and if you want to execute this process while installing the OS, use the second option - using the command line.

Through drives

Using command execution

This option can be applied and not during the installation of the system, but still it is better for this case:

Motherboard type definition: UEFI or BIOS

Information on what mode your fee, UEFI or BIOS works can be found on the Internet, focusing on its model and other data known about the board. If there is no such possibility, turn off the computer, turn it on and during the boot, press the Delete key on the keyboard to enter the boot menu. If the interface that opens the menu will contain pictures, icons or effects, then you use a newer version of the BIOS - UEFI.

So looks UEFI

Otherwise, it can be concluded that the BIOS is used.

This looks like bios

The only difference between the BIOS and UEFI, with which you will encounter during the installation of a new operating system, is the names of the installation media in the downloads list. In order for the computer to start the inclusion from the installation flash drive created by the installation flash drive created, and not from a hard disk, as it does it by default, you must manually change the load order via BIOS or UEFI. In the BIOS, in the first place, the usual carrier name should be located, without any consoles and additions, and in the UEFI - on the first place you need to put a carrier whose name begins with UEFI. Everything, no more differences before the end of the installation is not foreseen.

Install the installation media

Preparation of installation media

To create a media you will need:

  • the image of the system suitable for you, choosing which you need based on the processor bit (32 or 64-bit), such as a hard disk (GTP or MBR) and the most suitable version of the system (home, extended, etc.);
  • clean disk or flash drive, not less than 4 GB;
  • a third-party program RUFUS, which will be formatted and configured the media.

Download and open the RUFUS application and, having the data obtained above in the article, select one of the settings packages: for the BIOS and the MBR disk, for UEFI and the MBR disk or for UEFI and the GPT disk. Change the file system to the NTFS format for the MBR disk, and for the GPR disk on FAT32. Do not forget to specify the path to the file with the system, and after clicking the "Start" button and wait for the end of the process.

Install the correct settings for creating a carrier.

Installation process

So, if you have prepared the installation media, figured out what kind of disk type and BIOS version you can start setting the system:

  1. Insert the media into the computer, turn off the device, start the power process, enter into a BIOS or UEFI and install the media to the first place in the downloads list. More information about this in the "Definition of Motherboard Type: UEFI or BIOS", located above in the same article. After completing the downloads list configuration, save the changes made and exit the menu.

    Change the load order in BIOS or UEFI

  2. The standard installation process will begin, choose all the parameters you need, system versions and the rest of the necessary settings. When you offer to choose one of the following ways, an update or manual installation, select the second option to optionally work with the sections of the hard disk. If you do not need it, you can simply update the system.

    Complete the installation process

Video: Installing the system on the GTP disk

Problems with installation

If you have problems installing the system, namely the notification appears that it cannot be installed on the selected hard disk, then the reason may be as follows:

  • incorrectly selected the size of the system. Recall that the 32-bit OS is not suitable for GTP disks, but a 64-bit OS for single-core processors;
  • an error is made during the creation of an installation media, it is defective, or the system image used to create a carrier contains errors;
  • the system is installed not for the type of disk, convert it to the desired format. How to do this is described in the "How to change the type of hard disk type", located above in the same article;
  • in the download list, an error was made, that is, the installation media in UEFI mode was not selected;
  • installation is performed in IDE mode, it must be changed to ACHI. This is done in BIOS or UEFI, in the SATA Config section.

Installing the MBR or GTP disk in UEFI or BIOS mode is not very different, the main thing is to correctly create an installation media and configure the list of boot order. The remaining actions are no different from the standard system installation.

Good day to all!

When buying a new laptop (computer), more and more users are faced with various errors when installing Windows OS (for example, a popular error "Installing Windows to this disk is impossible ..." or the device does not see the bootable flash drive at all) .

This is due to the fact that in new computers "old" classic BIOS changes to UEFI . And, of course, create bootable media under UEFI - need somewhat different (therefore, from the "old" flash drive technology, it is impossible to install Windows).

And so, we will deal with all this in order ...

Creating a bootable flash drive under UEFI (GPT)

I want to start an article with one of the most popular questions: "How to find out, UEFI I have on a computer or BIOS, what do they have a difference ...".

In general, if you drop some unnecessary to most terms, then the UEFI, in fact, is an improved BIOS (to enter it also by special. button (most often F2 or DEL), it also has all the same settings as in the BIOS) .

See the visual difference immediately - in the UEFI a more modern graphical interface with a mouse support, there is no one blue screen (take a look at the screenshot below, I think the difference is visible to the naked eye). In addition, it is enough to read the upper line on the screen: "UEFI BIOS UTILITY" - Says for itself ...

In terms of dramatic differences between the UEFI from the BIOS, which is worth paying attention to:

  1. UEFI allows you to load from disks, the volume is more than 2 TB. The fact is that bIOS uses MBR (basic boot record), and gPT is used in UEFI - This is another standard for placing partitions on the hard disk (allows you to use discs in tens and hundreds of TB!). Because of this difference, often errors occur during installation, because Preparing the bootable media you need differently!
  2. as a rule, the computer with UEFI is loaded faster than with BIOS (due to parallel device initialization);
  3. UEFI is more advanced in terms of safety (for example, you can use cryptography);
  4. in UEFI, you can work with the mouse, the modern graphical interface is used (it is much more convenient to adjust the setting).

We know GPT or MBR

By the way, to see what you use the standard: GPT or MBR, just go to " " and at the bottom of the window open properties specific disk (not partition!). See Example below.

The "Tom" tab will be indicated by the "Style of section":

  • either "Table with GUID" (as on the example below) is GPT;
  • either MBR ...

By the way, in the same place in "Disk management" You can convert one standard to another (for example, GPT to the MBR). To do this without losing data, it is recommended to use specials. Utilities: Minitool Partition Wizard, Acronis Disk Director, Aomei Partition Assistant.

I talked about them in this article:

Now go directly to the creation of the boot flash drive

We will need:

  • utility RUFUS - (one of the best for the preparation of installation media);
  • boot ISO image with Windows: I recommend choosing the official ISO image from one edition of the system, and not more than 4 GB (for example, "Windows 10 Pro x64"; options such as "Windows 10 5 in 1 x32 + x64", etc. - I recommend not to use, various problems often arise with them!).

    You may use an article about how to download an ISO image from Windows 10 [officially and legally] -

  • a flash drive is 4-8 GB (better than 8 GB is better, because not always and not every image can be placed on a USB flash drive in 4 GB).

Actions in order:

1) The first thing you need to do is insert a USB flash drive into the USB port and copy everything important from it that it is (in the process of further work, everything will be removed from it!).

2) utility Rufus. need to run OT. administrator name (If someone does not know - just go under the administrator's account in Windows, right-click on the program executable file and select this function in the pop-up context menu).

RUFUS 2.1 settings for recording installation media

Update from 01/24/2019. Utility RUFUS When updating to version 3, somewhat changed the design. Just in case (so that there is no confusion) I will add the screen of the window of a newer version.

RUFUS 3.4 - Creating a flash drive under UEFI (GPT)

4) RUFUS You, by the way, will warn you that all data on the flash drive will be deleted during recording, and will ask you to confirm the operation. If everything you need from the flash drive was copied in advance - press "OK".

5) minutes after 5-10 * (time depends on USB operation, flash drives selected ISO image) - The flash drive will be ready and you can start installing Windows.

One of the examples of installing Windows 10 from a similar media -

All the best! ✌
