If you decide to start working in 3D MAX, then the first thing you need to learn to do is simulate. Apparently, you have already created something, since we decided to learn how to apply the texture to the object. In this article you will learn how to texture at the initial stage. I warn you: this lesson is just for newcomers.

To impose texture to the object, you need to learn how to work correctly with the editor of the materials (Material Editor). To call it, you need to click hot key "M"Or click on the icon on the right above.

You will appear in the window with this editor. It looks like this:

Slate Material Editor

The inscription "Slate Material Editor" at the top of the window says that you have opened an updated editor that appeared in the latest versions of 3DS MAX, including the 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017.

In old versions of 3DS MAX, only a compact editor of materials, which looks like a table with cells. For many, it is most habit and work is more convenient. Therefore, beginners are recommended to use it. To switch to a compact option, click on the "Modes" section and select "Compact Material Editor".

The next thing to do is to increase the number of cells, because Already in the near future there will be too little for you. Press the right mouse button on any cell (gray ball) and select 6 × 4 Sample Windows.

We give the name material and choose the texture

Let's call it accordingly. For example, the "floor tree". Only write in English letters, because in the future, for example, in another version of 3DS MAX, this name can be displayed as doodles (the problem of Russian fonts). So try to work out the habit of writing everything in English. And it is not necessary to know the language. We write just "Derevo Pola" and this is quite enough to understand everything.

The next thing we do is open the "Maps" section. It is just necessary for us to add texture to our material. After all, just texture on the object (3D model) do not apply. It is the material (shader) that will contain within itself the texture, such as wood or plaster.

Important! The material may not have one, but at once several different textures, for example, mixed with each other, as well as the texture of the relief, reflection, etc.

Here we need to start only the Diffuse Color section, in which the main texture will be stored. Click on the None slot opposite Diffuse Color, choose a "Standart" scroll and 2 times with Bitmap.

Now it remains only to choose an appropriate texture on your computer and add it to Bitmap.

Get used to scatter textures across the hard disk, and you need to immediately download or copy or copy, then save the image to the project folder, where you save your 3DS MAX file.

Appoint material object

In order for the 3D model to take a decent view, you need to "pull" our selected texture on it. Apply the material to the object. This can be done in two ways:

  1. just throw from the editor to the object (action 1 on the screenshot below);
  2. select an object, highlight the desired material, click on the icon (action 2).

That's all. The material is assigned to the object. In order for the texture to be visible on 3D models, you need to click on the chess icon (step 3 in the screenshot).

Texturing is a process that many beginners (and not only!) Modellers break over. However, if you understand the basic principles of texturing and correctly apply them, you can qualitatively and quickly texture models of any complexity. In this article, we will consider two approaches to texturing: on the example of an object with a simple geometric shape and on the example of a complex object with an inhomogeneous surface.

Simple texturing

1. Open 3DS MAX and create several primitives: boxing, ball and cylinder.

2. Open the materials editor by pressing the "M" key, and create a new material. It does not matter if it will be a V-ray material or standard, we create it only with the aim of correctly displaying texture. Assign the "Shecker" card into the "Diffuse" slot by choosing it in the "Standart" list of cards.

3. Assign the material to all objects by clicking the "Assign Material To Selection" button. Before this, activate the "Show Shaded Material In ViewPort" button so that the material is displayed in the three-dimensional window.

4. Select Boxing. Apply the "UVW MAP" modifier to it by selecting it from the list.

5. Let's proceed directly to texturing.

- In the "Mapping" section, we put a point near the "Box" - the texture is correctly located on the surface.

- The dimensions of the texture or step of the repetition of its drawing are set below. In our case, the repetition of the pattern is regulated, since the CHECKER card is procedural, not raster.

- Yellow rectangle, framing our object, is "Gizmo", the area in which the modifier is affected. It can be moved, rotated, scaling, centered, tie to the axes. With the help of Gizmo texture is placed in the right place.

6. Select the scope and assign the "UVW MAP" modifier.

- In the "Mapping" section, install the point opposite the "Sperical". Texture took the shape of the ball. To better be able to increase the cell's pitch. The Gizmo parameters do not differ from the box, except that the Gizmo of the ball will have a spherical form accordingly.

7. A similar situation for the cylinder. Appointing the "UVW MAP" modifier for it, set the texturing type "Cylindrical".

Texturing scanning

1. Open in 3DS MAX scene having an object with a complex surface.

2. By analogy with the previous example, create a material with the "CheCker" card and assign it to the object. You will notice that the texture is incorrect, and the use of the "UVW MAP" modifier does not give the desired effect. What to do?

3. Apply the "UVW Mapping Clear" modifier to the object, and then "Unwrap UVW". The last modifier will help us create a surface scan for applying textures.

4. Go to the level of the polygons and select all the landfills of the object to texture.

5. Find the Pelt Map icon with a leather tag on the scan panel and press it.

6. A large and complex scan editor will open, but we are now only interested in the function of stretching and relaxing surface polygons. Press alternately "PELT" and "RELAX" - the scan will be smoothed. The more precisely it is smoothed, the more correctly the texture is displayed.

This process is automatic. The computer itself determines how it is better to smooth out the surface.

7. After applying "Unwrap UVW", the result has become much better.

So we got acquainted with simple and complex texturing. Practice as often as possible and you will become a real pro-three-dimensional modeling!
