DVD replacement kit on SSD. Replace HDD in a laptop on SSD - instruction. Comparison HDD and SSD. Installing SSD in a laptop instead of an old HDD

Hello everyone. Today I want to tell how to install an additional SSD disc in place of the CD drive in the ASUS X550L laptop.

To begin with, you need to get acquainted with the technical characteristics of your laptop to understand which components need to be purchased in order to start installing the SSD disc. I will say right away if the model of your laptop is different from the model that I consider in my post do not be discouraged. Almost all modern models of laptops that have a CD drive can be installed additional HDD.

Before starting, we need to make sure that we have everything you need.

  • New SSD HDD. Your new SSD must have 2.5 form factor.
  • A set of tool for disassembling a laptop (small cross screwdriver). Heads of all screws that you will unscrew the same size.
  • Plastic mediator for opening the laptop housing or bank card.
  • Pocket for replacing a CD / DVD-drive of a laptop by 2.5 "HDD / SSD.

Here I will tell more in more detail. The thickness of the adapter should be 9.5 mm. Since the thickness of the installed DVD - drive in the model of the laptop model is 9.5 mm. And for the successful installation of the adapter, you need this thickness otherwise you simply cannot install an adapter. For this laptop model, I purchased an adapter ESPADA SS95 ALU SATA 3 (SATA CD / DVD 9.5mm to SATA 3). You can buy. The cost of such an adapter today is 300-370 UAH.

In a set with an adapter there is a screwdriver (once), screws for fasteners HDD, plastic cover which is installed on the adapter to close a hole that is formed after removing the DVD drive and the adapter installation. We do not need this cover but about everything in order.

Now the most interesting thing :).

First, we need to open the laptop. We take our laptop turn off it. Check that our laptop has successfully turned off turn it over and remove the battery.

After removing the battery, we need to extract our native hard disk. To do this, we need to unscrew the lid on the opposite side of the battery.

In the screenshot above the arrows, I specified where you need to unscrew the screws.

After you unscrew the screws you need to remove the lid. To remove the lid, you need to pull it a little on yourself and raise it (provided that the laptop lies in front of you as shown in the screenshot).

Under the lid, you will see a hard disk and memory modules. We need a hard disk. We have to remove the hard disk as we install the SSD disk on this place. You ask why it is here and not instead of a DVD drive. I explain. If the speed of the tire to which the hard faster is connected (SATA 3 in hard, SATA 2 at optical), then SSD is put on this place.

In the screenshot above I showed the place of fastening the hard disk. You need to unscrew the screws and move the hard drive in the left after that the disc can be removed.

Please note that the screws have a different size and you need to remember where you were twisted.

When you unscrew all the screws in the case joins the mediator. It is necessary to separate the top of the laptop from the bottom.

Pay special attention that all screws are unscrewed otherwise you can damage the case.

It is necessary to separate the top of the laptop from the bottom.

Be extremely careful when opening the case as in these models there are very harvested latches on the housing and they can break.

Insert the sharp edge of the mediator in the gap between the bottom and top of the laptop and slowly turn to the latch inside the case. You need to start with the front of the laptop where light indicators are located. So you need to walk the mediator throughout the perimeter of the case.

When the upper cover is separated from the bottom, do not lift it sharply at the top as the upper and lower part of the laptop is connected by loops. This is visible in the screenshot.

I also advise you to watch the video that recorded a kind man with nickname DanyThe007 on this video shows how to disassemble this model of the laptop.

I want to immediately say that I did not disconnect the loops to remove the upper cover as I managed to remove the DVD - the drive without disconnecting the top of the laptop (it saved my time).

Let's go back to our branches. Now we need to unscrew the DVD drive. To not disconnect the loops, I used a short screwdriver to unscrew the screw that fastens the drive to the laptop.

The screenshot shows where the screw is shown that you want to unscrew to remove the DVD drive.

After we removed the drive, we need to do our adapter. You need to install our old hard disk in the adapter. Immediately remove the old disc from the mounting frame and install our SSD to the frame instead of the old disk and lay aside. We will return to him a little later.

The adapter has a small instruction that tells how to fix the disk. After installing the disk, we need to remove the plastic cover from our DVD drive.

In order to remove the cover from the drive, you need to open. For this we need a needle or clip. On the front of the drive panel, there is a small hole in this hole you need to insert a needle and a little press the drive carriage should go out of the housing. Now you have access to the bottom of the drive to separate the stub from the drive carriage.

All laptop is assembled. We received two hard drive installed one installed in the adapter and the new SSD installed on the place of the old disk.

Just after you have collected your laptop to enter the BIOS. There you will see two gesting disks. It is necessary to install AHCI mode in Encanced from whom it has not yet been exhibited. This parameter will allow us to work as a new disk as a full SATA device.

Now you ask how to deal with the operating system installed? How to transfer without loss of operability of the OS?

Since I knew that I would continue to install an SSD disk I created a pre-system section of 95GB. After installing the hard disk, I transferred the system partition and all related entries to the new SSD disk using Acronis Universal Restore.. If you want me to describe how I did write it in the comments and I will write a new post with a more detailed description of OS transfer to a new disk.

If you have long ceased to use a DVD drive in your laptop, then it's time to replace it with a new SSD. You did not know what it was possible? Then today we will tell you in detail how to do it and that it will be necessary for this.

So, weighing everything "for" and "Against" we came to the conclusion that the optical disk drive is an excess device and it would be nice to put SSD instead. To do this, we will need a drive itself and a special adapter (or adapter), which is perfectly suitable in size instead of a DVD drive. Thus, we will not only easier to connect the disk, but also the laptop housing itself will look more aesthetic.

Preparatory stage

Before purchasing a similar adapter, it is worth paying attention to the size of your drive. An ordinary drive has a height of 12.7 mm, there are also ultra-thin drives, which in height are 9.5 mm.

Now that we have a suitable adapter and SSD, you can start installation.

Disconnect the DVD drive

First of all, you need to disconnect the battery. In cases where the battery is not removable, you will have to remove the laptop cover and disconnect the battery connector from the motherboard.

In most cases, in order to remove the drive no need to disassemble the laptop completely. It is enough to unscrew several screws and the optical drive is easy to remove. If you are not quite confident in your abilities, it is better to look for a video instruction directly for your model or contact a specialist.

Install SSD.

That's all, our drive is ready for installation.

Now it remains to insert an adapter with an SSD in a laptop, spin bolts and connect the battery. Turn on the laptop, format a new disk, and then you can transfer the operating system from the magnetic drive, and the last to use for data storage.

I'll show you how to change the HDD hard drive on a speed SSD disk. Bought SSD SAMSUNG 850 EVO disk by 250 GB. And installed it to his laptop. Then installed Windows and all programs on a new SSD disk.

I bought my ssd samsung 850 SSD EVO 120 GB SATA III on AlExpress . I wanted to order such Samsung 750 SSD EVO 120 GB of SATA III at first (it is 120 GB and cheaper), but as a result, I ordered 250 GB, although I could do 120 GB. SSD Samsung 850 EVO came about 12 days later (the fastest item that came with Aliexpress).

The parcel is well packaged and compacted by polystyrene foam. Inside the box plastic, and in it SSD disk.

Here are the specifications of this SSD disk. My read speed tests, records at the bottom of the page.

1. Copy all the information you need from your disk

If you also have just one seat under the hard disk in a laptop, then you first copy all the information from your hard drive to an external disk or another computer. Or buy. So that you can then connect your removed HDD disk via USB and download everything you need to your new SSD disk.

Here is a visual video is an adapter.

2. Remove the hard disk and set SSD

Turn off the laptop, turn off the laptop from all wires, turn it over and remove the laptop battery. Now on the back cover of the laptop, find the inscription HDD - this is the place where your hard drive is installed. I have a samsung NP-R560 on the bottom left below. The hard disk is closed with a lid with two curticks.

We unscrew these two screws covering the hard disk of the laptop.

Remove the cover with a closing hard disk. On it should be arrows showing in which direction you need to pull to move the lid.

Here he is a hard disk of my laptop. There is an aluminum cover on it to better dispel heat and there is a tongue to make it easier to remove it. It is enough just to take for this tongue and pull to the left to disconnect the hard drive from the connector.

Ready, hard disk is disconnected from laptop and connectors. Raise it and remove to the side.

This is how the laptop looks like without a disk.

Now insert the SSD disk to the HDD disk place.

Gently insert it into place of the old HDD disk. I also put an aluminum plate from the old HDD to a new SSD.

Close the lid of the hard disk.

Spin the screws of the lid.

Ready. Now we turn over the laptop insert all the wires into it, put the battery back and turn on the laptop.

3. Install Windows to a new SSD

On the new SSD disk there is nothing and OS (Windows) is also no, so now you need to install Windows on it. You will receive this error when you try to download from a new SSD disk on which there is no Windows operating system.

Partition Table Invalid or Corrupted. Press Any Key to Continue ...

You need to insert your boot flash drive and boot from it.

If you still do not have a loading flash drive, then it's time to do it.

Here is a video on how to configure the BIOS to install Windows from the loading flash drive.

Now when there is a boot flash drive and loading occurs from it, you install Windows to a new SSD. We choose our SSD it will be marked as "unoccupied space on a disk 0" and click "Next" and install Windows.

Copying Windows files will begin, then prepare for installation, installation of components, installation of updates, completion. The computer will reboot several times. After the first reboot, you can remove the loading flash drive.

If you have never installed Windows via BIOS, then you have a video on this topic.

After installed Windows to a new SSD disc, change the boot priority in the BIOS so that the Windows bootloader first was looking for an SSD disk. Although if everything is loaded and works, you can change anything already. I will go to the BIOS, Boot - Boot Device Priority.

And the F5 or F6 key will move the SSD disk to the very top, so that the boot sector is first discussed at the SSD disk, and then on the rest of the disks, if not detected on SSD.

4. Comparison of SSD speed with HDD and USB discs

Using the CrystalDiskMark 3 program, I measured the recording speed and reading your HDD disk before it is removed and replaced by SSD. The read speed from it was about 100 MB. \\ S. With consistent reading and writing.

Every year, users are increasingly resorting to the use of optical drives. USB drives and cloud storage services due to convenience and mobility almost completely displaced CD / DVDs. Many users are dissatisfied with the fact that the drive in their laptop occupies a place that could be removed under something more useful. Fortunately, there is a way to make it. Indeed, instead of an unnecessary drive, you can install an additional SSD drive to which you can transfer the operating system, and on the usual HDD to store all your files. This approach is very practical and convenient. In this article, consider in detail how to install instead of a DVD in a laptop. Let's deal with. Go!

Install SSD and HDD on a laptop is not so difficult, as it seems

In online stores and regular stores where components for computers are sold, you can purchase a special SLIM DVD adapter that allows you to install a hard drive instead of an optical drive. It works as follows. An HDD of your computer is inserted into the adapter adapter, then the disk together with the adapter is mounted instead of a drive, and in place where the hard disk of the computer was installed in the place where the hard disk was installed. Agree, it sounds quite simple. In fact, everything is not so difficult.

Let's proceed. You need to start, of course, with the acquisition of an adapter adapter SLIM DVD. Adapters, as well as drives there are two types: 12.7 mm and 9.5 mm. Depending on what your drive, buy the appropriate adapter adapter, otherwise the railway simply will not be able to place on the site of the optical drive. If you have already bought it, you can go to the installation.

First of all, you should remove the necessary components. It is not difficult to do it, because you do not have to disassemble the laptop completely, and you only remove some of its components. Immediately it is worth noting that if your computer is under warranty, then due to such modifications, the warranty will disappear. Despite the fact that the whole procedure is not very complicated, it should be treated with all seriousness and responsibility. Therefore, if you are not sure of your own, it is better to trust this work to the master.

First remove the battery, but if you simply don't even drop it on your laptop, then turn it off from your motherboard to avoid possible problems and troubleshooting. You do not need to remove all the bottom. It is enough to unscrew a pair of screws to get HDD. The same story with an optical drive. On the Internet, you can easily find detailed information on the disassembly of each laptop model (since they all differ). See how to remove the drive and hard disk with a specific laptop model. After you removed the corresponding covers, remove the HDD. To do this, you need to pull for a special tongue from silicone. Since the HDD is fixed on special clamses, they must be removed by twisting the corresponding screws.

Now you need to install the drive in the adapter. As a rule, everything you need to install is available inside the box with an adapter, namely: screwdriver, screws, plug, strut and instruction. Please note that from the drive it is necessary to remove special attachments located on the sides, and fasten them to the adapter. Install the HDD in the adapter and insert in the SATA connector. Then mount the strut. The railway itself must still be fixed with the screw on the other side of the Slim DVD. To do this, you will need a fine dump, which comes in the kit. Then remove the mount on the other side of the optical drive and attach it to the adapter. Put the plug. Everything. Now you can insert the drive to the drive location.

The next step is the SSD mount. Attach it to it, on which the HDD was once enshrined. Then insert the SSD to the place of the hard disk, screwing it to the laptop using two screws.

Now it remains to fasten the covers covering the discs on the drive and hard disk. Ready. Turn the computer and turn it on. After downloading, you will see that an additional drive appeared on your computer.

Now you know how to replace the laptop drive to an additional SSD drive. As you can see, it is simple enough. Write in the comments if this article was useful for you and share with other users with your impressions and experience if you have already tried to put an additional drive instead of an optical drive.
