New ios update. What is the latest version of iOS for my iPhone or iPad: how to find out and where to download. Back up your data

On September 17, 2018 at 20:00 Moscow time, the release of iOS 12, a new version of the mobile operating system for Apple devices, took place.

To be honest, I didn't expect mine to ever work on anything fresh. After the release of the eleventh version of the system, the Internet exploded with a flurry of indignation: iOS 11 managed to slow down and drain the battery even on fresh models of iPhones and iPads, and even brought the “oldies” into a deplorable state. When it seems to be possible to use, but very sad.

In general, I did not dare to upgrade from “tens” to “eleventh”. I regularly deleted the iOS 11 installation files from memory, which the iPhone downloaded at night in order to joyfully notify its owner in the morning that it was ready to install a new system right now, and I thought to stay on iOS 10 until I replaced the current iPhone with a more recent model.

It was all the more surprising to learn two circumstances.

Firstly, after WWDC 2018, it became known that the new iOS 12 will also support the first generation iPhone 5s and iPad Air, released in 2013. More than 5 years of updates from the manufacturer - I wonder if any Android devices can boast something like this?

Secondly, after the release of the very first beta version of the new system, intriguing reviews appeared. It turns out that even in the beta stage, the new system works much faster and smoother than iOS 11. And on older devices, it generally works wonders.

So I decided to take a chance and installed the update right after it appeared on the evening of September 17th. And in this article I will briefly describe how the five-year-old iPhone feels on the latest operating system of 2018.

The iOS 12 distribution weighs 1.8 GB, downloading and installing “over the air”, without the need to use a PC. Of course, you can install the update through iTunes, but as a rule, this is not necessary.

These brakes should not be misleading. You need to reboot the device several times in a row - during reboots, iOS cleans up the file system, removes garbage and performs some other self-service operations.

Reboot after installing updates is a must!

What's new?

I updated the iPhone 5s from iOS 10 immediately to iOS 12, skipping iOS 11. Therefore, it is difficult for me to assess what changes were introduced by version 12 of the system, and not 11.

But let's try.

Updated system interface

The iOS 10 interface looked like this:

Same screens after updating to iOS 12:

Most of the innovations came back in iOS 11: in particular, the text names of programs in the lower dock disappeared.

Fonts have changed, becoming thinner and neater.

Updated interface "Music"

The music player has also received minor cosmetic changes.

Music app in iOS 10:

Music app in iOS 12:

The most noticeable change is the new player widget on the lock screen. Now it is designed in dark colors and, in my opinion, looks prettier than the old one.

Updated Books app

The iBooks book reader built into the system has been significantly redesigned.

The "iBooks" app in iOS 10:

The Books app in iOS 12:

The name of the app has changed. From "iBooks" it was renamed to "Books" (or "Books" in Russian localization).

Refreshed and began to look more modern interface. The bookshelf received a division into two tabs - directly "Library" with all the books available on the device and the "Reading Now" tab for quick access to recently opened books.

But integration with the iTunes bookstore, on the contrary, has shrunk from as many as three tabs (Selection, Top Charts and Purchases) to a single Book Store.

Unfortunately, for Russian-speaking users, the iTunes bookstore is still useless: there are still no Russian editions in it, apparently Apple considers it unprofitable for itself to enter our market for electronic distribution of books.

Also in the application "Books" appeared a dark interface, which is automatically activated at night.

Grouping notifications

The same type of notifications from the same application are now stacked into stacks of cards, taking up less space:

It is very convenient, especially for those who constantly receive notifications from a bunch of various instant messengers on their phone.

Miscellaneous little things

  • Shortcuts app. Apple bought and made the Workflow application free for users, which allows you to write scripts to automate routine actions. Now "Workflow" has changed its name to "Teams", has received improved integration with Siri and is available for free download in the App Store.
  • screen time. A new tool that allows you to control the amount of time spent on your smartphone, both in general and divided into individual applications or their groups. For example, you can control the amount of time spent daily on social networks and set a limit on the use of certain applications.
  • Updated battery usage statistics. Now it not only shows the use of battery power by various programs, but also plots charge-discharge and screen activity by time of day.
  • Trackpad for everyone. Previously, the iOS on-screen keyboard had a trackpad function for devices with 3D Touch support (i.e. from iPhone 6s onwards). It was necessary to hold down the virtual space key and swipe across the screen in any direction. This activated the cursor with the ability to move freely around the screen, which was very convenient for working with text. Now the trackpad feature has become available for owners of all devices - including older iPads and iPhone 5s.
  • New wallpapers. The set of pre-installed wallpapers for the default screen has almost completely changed. The image sets from iOS 9 and earlier have been removed and replaced with new images.
  • Lots of cosmetic changes. Almost all system applications received minor changes. The Safari browser has a rounded address bar outline, the Maps interface has changed slightly, the interface of the Stocks information application has been redesigned, and more details are displayed in the Weather application. In general, the system interface began to look nicer and fresher.

Not without jambs

In the release version of iOS 12, you can find small jambs of layout. For example, this is how fonts move out in the updated App Store:

And this is what the bottom of the tab switching screen looks like in Safari:

Something similar happened after the release of iOS 10 and was fixed in subsequent minor updates.

The reason for this is the low screen resolution of the iPhone 5s/SE, which does not fit typical layout elements. This will almost certainly be fixed in future system updates.

Performance

The performance of iOS 12 on the iPhone 5s just shocked me. In a good way.

After updating the operating system and several reboots, during which the processes taking place in the bowels of the system somehow finally settle down, the old iPhone just started to fly.

The speed and smoothness of work have improved significantly even compared to iOS 10. What can we say about the sufferers who once risked upgrading to the eleventh version of the system.

The device just found a second life. In principle, using it was already quite comfortable, but after installing the update, it felt like you were holding another smartphone in your hands: like the same iPhone 5s, only slightly updated.

Take my word for it. I see no reason to embed videos with iPhone response time measurements on different versions of the system, since they absolutely do not reflect the real user experience after installing the update.

The “bottleneck” of the iPhone 5s is the low amount of RAM. The smartphone cannot keep several more or less heavy applications open at the same time and unloads unused ones into the cache almost immediately. In all other respects, the device feels quite cheerful.

Summing up

If iOS 10 at one time left a mixed and generally negative impression, then iOS 12 is a pure delight.

This is a high-quality and well-optimized system that can give a second life even to old “apple” devices.

iOS is the simplest operating system in terms of interaction with it for an inexperienced user, and this is one of the main reasons for the popularity of the iPhone and iPad among absolutely all categories of the population. Almost any user can solve problems that have arisen in the iOS software environment and even independently produce.

What is iOS and what types of updates are there

So, iOS is a software shell that controls the hardware modules of an iPhone or iPad. The main advantage of this operating system is that it is produced by the mobile gadget manufacturer Apple itself. In addition, third-party application developers also focus on a rather narrow range of devices, which means that there are almost no problems with compatibility, software version selection and installation.

Another important nuance is that Apple distributes its operating systems for free, without any hidden conditions (required subscriptions to products or services, availability of paid previous versions, etc.). That is, you can download the latest firmware version for your device from the official website, without the risk of installing a pirated copy with malware.

Apple releases 3 types of iOS updates:

1. Official (final).

2. Beta versions for registered developers.

3. Beta versions for regular users registered in.

We talked about all types of iOS updates in more detail.

How to find out what version of iOS is currently installed on iPhone or iPad

The easiest way is to reflash the iPhone "over the air". To do this, just go to the section mentioned above " SettingsMainSoftware Update", press the button « Download and Install». In this case, all available data will be saved on the device. It is important to remember that installing iOS "over the air" in no case should be carried out if there is a jailbreak on the device.

To completely reinstall iOS via iTunes, you will need to perform a slightly more complicated algorithm of actions, which is described in detail in the material. In this case, you will need the latest version of iOS for a specific iPhone or iPad.

Dark mode

One of the most noticeable changes in terms of appearance (and perhaps the most anticipated) was the introduction of a dark theme, similar to the one that appeared a year ago in macOS. Enabling this mode is available in the "Settings" in the "Screen and brightness" section or the Control Center. Depending on the wishes of the user, you can choose a dark or light design for permanent use, or set up automatic switching according to a schedule.

Dark mode is integrated into iOS, from built-in apps and settings to the entire system. New dark mode optimized wallpapers automatically change when you switch from light mode to dark mode.

Completely revamped Photos tab. With it, you can view the media library with different levels of content sorting. Now it's even easier to find, remember and share your favorite photos and videos. Scroll through your library in All Photos view, select unique shots in Days view, remember the most important moments in Months view, and find forgotten frames in Years view.

In the Photos app, Live Photos and videos now play automatically without sound while scrolling.

In Days, Months, and Years view, photo previews are enlarged to make it easier for you to find the photo you're looking for. "Photo" has also learned how to highlight the best part of the frame on the preview. Touch it - and the full version of the picture will be displayed.

The app recognizes duplicate photos, blank frames, screenshots, documents and invoices - and hides them so you only see the photos you need. Smart Album for Screen Recordings: Now all your screen recordings are stored together.

In the "Months" section, photos are organized by events. The Photos tab displays the names of places, holidays, or the names of performers at a concert.

The Years mode is context dependent. It shows last year's pictures that were taken on this day or on dates close to it. If you have specified birthdays for people in your People photo album, on those dates, pictures with them will be highlighted in the Photos tab.

Improved Search: You can combine different search terms (such as "beach" and "selfie") without clicking on each word in the search. Soundtracks for Memories videos are selected based on your music preferences in the Music app.

The Enhance feature now gives you control over your automatic editing tools. As you increase or decrease the enhancement intensity, you will notice changes in settings such as exposure, sharpness, highlights, shadows, contrast, brightness, black point, saturation, and vibrance.

Filters, cropping and adjustments can now be used in videos: you can rotate the image, apply a filter or increase the exposure. Video editing is supported for all formats available on iPhone, including 4K video at 60 fps and 1080p slow motion video at 240 fps. Edits made to a video can be undone. Delete the applied effect in the same way as a filter, or cancel the crop and return to the original.

Camera

Adjust the position and intensity of studio lighting. Increase the intensity of portrait lighting effects by bringing an imaginary light source closer to your subject. This will emphasize facial features, visually make the skin smoother, and the eyes brighter.

The new B/W Highlight Portrait Lighting effect lets you take black and white photos with monochrome subjects against a white background.

Security and Privacy

Control the location data shared with apps with new, precise controls. You can choose to grant an app access to your location only once, or each time you use it.

Get notified when an app is using your location in the background, so you can decide whether to renew your permission to access it.

Sign in with Apple

Now you can quickly sign in to apps and websites with your Apple ID. No need to fill out forms and come up with new passwords. Just tap Sign in with Apple (where available), then use Face ID or Touch ID and you're done.

Apple won't track or create your digital profile when you sign in with your Apple ID. You only provide the app or website with your name and email address.

Not sure if you want to share your email with a specific app? You decide. You can choose to provide or hide your email address. Apple can create a unique address for you and redirect incoming emails to your real email address.

Sign in with Apple requires your Apple ID to be secured with two-factor authentication. Thus, access to accounts in your favorite applications will also be automatically protected. The feature works across all Apple devices, as well as websites, Android apps, and Windows apps.

House

HomeKit-enabled cameras can now trigger video recording when motion is detected by people, animals, or vehicles. These videos are stored in iCloud. And new privacy settings let you control streaming and recording on camcorders. Added support for AirPlay 2 enabled speakers.

Cards

Now the roads, beaches, parks, buildings and other objects on it are significantly improved and displayed in much more detail.

Look Around Feature: Explore the place you're going with an immersive 3D journey with a 360-degree view of the area.

Create collections of your favorite places and those you are about to visit. And share them with your friends. To enable one-touch navigation, create a list of frequently visited places - such as your child's home, work, gym, or school.

Report Arrival: Send your expected arrival time to family, friends and colleagues. It will be updated if there is a significant delay. Up-to-date information about your flight terminal, boarding gate number, departure time and other information is now available.

Siri

Siri can now turn on music, podcasts, audiobooks, and radio using third-party apps.

Memoji and Messages

Automatically share your name and photo when you start a new conversation or get a response from someone you're talking to. You can share this data with everyone, only people in your contact list, or not send it to anyone. You can even use Animoji, any image or monogram instead of a photo.

Search by Messages will help you quickly find the information you need. Before you even start typing your search term, you'll see recent messages, people you're talking to, photos, links, and places - you might not even have to search for anything. After entering a query, the application will sort the results and highlight the matching words.

Now you can give your Memoji a makeover by choosing blush and eye shadow. Add braces or pierce your nose, eyebrows, eyelids, or the area around your mouth. In addition, there are 30 new hairstyles, over 15 hats, and additional earring and eyewear options.

Use new Animoji characters - mouse, octopus and cow. Memoji and Animoji support all devices with an A9 processor or later.

In CarPlay, you can activate the "Do not disturb the driver" mode, which will turn off all notifications. A special section has appeared in the settings, in which you can change the display settings and control the Do not disturb the driver mode.

If you open an app on an iPhone, it will not appear on the CarPlay screen. Passengers can easily select songs on the device while the driver uses the Maps app.

Performance

App launches are faster: iOS 13 apps open up to two times faster. Unlocking the iPhone 11 series, iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR is up to 30% faster with Face ID.

The system has changed the way apps are compressed in the App Store, resulting in up to 50% fewer files to download.

Notes are now shown as thumbnails with images, making it even easier to find the note you're looking for. This is especially handy for notes with images, sketches, or Apple Pencil handwriting.

Collaborate with other people by giving them access to the contents of a folder. They will be able to add their own attachments, notes, and their own folders inside the shared one.

The search function now recognizes objects and places in pictures added to notes and helps you find text in scanned documents, such as invoices.

Drag items on interactive lists to change the order. Swipe to indent. And the marked items can be automatically moved to the end of the list. If all the tasks in the list are completed, uncheck the items and use the list again.

Despite the fact that Apple is releasing more and more new models that millions are chasing, many iPhone users have older versions of the smartphone working fine, and at the same time, everything suits the person.

But after all, with the release of the latest versions, not only the design or performance changes. Partially or even radically, the operating system can also change.

As you know, the iPhone is distinguished by the presence of a unique and inimitable IOS, which is installed on brand products.

By itself, this system is quite good: the user is pleased to work with independent applications and the quick response of his device, user-friendly interface and many other advantages that the operating system has.

That's just progress does not stand still, and with each update, at least something changes.

For example, take the sixth and tenth versions of the operating system for comparison.

Even those who are not particularly versed in the intricacies of such devices will notice with the naked eye smoother operation of windows, the presence of some new features and the speed of the smartphone's response to requests.

Therefore, many people need, it is important, or even necessary, to update the system, so the question of how to update IOS on an iPhone is very acute for many users.

This will provide both convenience and speed, and the ability to expand the functions of your device. That is why you need to know how to do it right.

So as not to harm your own phone and not throw it away after an unsuccessful attempt to demolish the old one and install a new OS.

Update iPhone 4 to iOS 8

Update with iTunes

No, no, there is no mistake here. It’s just that the “four” does not support all operating systems, and, for example, IOS 11, or even 10, which, as everyone knows, is installed on the latest models, simply will not work on the fourth version.

And therefore, you need to update the iPhone 4 to the maximum available version of the operating system correctly so as not to harm the device and not install a system in it that will knock down all the work or not start at all.

For the fourth iPhone, there are two ways to update: wired and wireless.

As you might have guessed, the second one is done with .

Here everything will be even easier.

Of course, the first update method may seem more convenient for those who are not used to trusting wireless Internet, who experience network outages, or who simply do not want to try anything but good old USB.

Well, the second method, as it turned out, is easier than the first, it is enough to make only a few clicks to start updating the operating system. But even here there are some peculiarities.

For example, the file itself weighs quite a lot, and it will be difficult to download it even using wireless Internet.

Yes, and you need to monitor the battery - if during downloading or, even worse, installing software, your device turns off, then you will have to resort to the first update method.

The most important thing here is to make sure that everything is in order with the network, that the wireless Internet is stable, and that your device has enough battery power and internal memory to update.

So, for this you need:

  • Create a data backup. This can be done in the same iTunes, so as not to lose all your files and settings during the update, and not end up with an empty device.
  • Connect to your Wi-Fi network, make sure the connection is secure.
  • Then go to your iPhone settings.
  • A few simple clicks: "Basic" - "Software Update" - "Download and Install".

In this case, the download process will start automatically (if the latest version has not been installed before), and then you will only have to install it and return the saved backup data from iTunes or.

Each of the methods has its advantages and disadvantages, and the user only has to choose which one will be more convenient for him.

In any case, updating your fourth iPhone to the highest possible version is not so difficult, but the operation of the device itself after that, although not guaranteed to be perfect, should noticeably improve.

But what about those who want to upgrade their iPhone to IOS 10?

Update to iOS 10

Yes, the iPhone with the number "four" supports only 8 IOS maximum, but on iPhones with a higher model, they already fully support the tenth, and even the eleventh operating system.

And yes, updating it is not much more difficult than other versions.

But in this case, there are a number of features that must be taken into account.

For example, if in the case of updating to the eighth version, it was only recommended to transfer personal data to or iCloud, then this time such a step is necessary, and without it, in fact, nothing will be updated.

In addition, sometimes the user will need to enter a password, or even take care to find an opportunity and keep it on charge all day or all night, since "ten" is updated much more slowly.

And the update itself is very, very simple:

  • Just like with IOS 8, to install the tenth version, you need to check if the wireless Internet connection is stable and if the battery is enough, it will be better even to leave the device connected to charge.
  • To start the installation, you need to go to "Settings".
  • Then we do the same steps:: "Basic" - "Software Update" - "Download and Install".

That's it, just a few clicks, and the operating system will start an automatic update.

True, it also happens that the device may not have enough memory, so the update may simply not install, and its download or installation will break in the middle, which, of course, will lead to big problems.

Version 10 weighs much more than version 8, so the user will have to tinker a bit before installing the operating system.

Here's what you can see if you don't follow the correct installation order for version 11

As many people know, this version of the operating system enters the market in the fall. And therefore, the owners of iPhones thought about updating theirs to IOS 11 even before its release?

True, as always happens, there were those who believe that the version is still “raw” and that the previous one was better, and perhaps they are right, because updates are not always successful.

But, be that as it may, the version numbered "11" is equipped with good animation, ease of use, and a number of new features and improvements that were not available for the "ten" or simply did not exist.

Remember that this is the first beta version of the software. It can really have problems, and installing the operating system again will be doubly difficult. Only the user is responsible for his smartphone.

In case you still decide to take a chance and try out the new version, you need to know that the installation of the software here will be somewhat different.

If only because this is a development for developers, in other words, not everyone can test it.

But there are still ways to get around these restrictions and use iOS 11 on your device..

  • Keeping your data on iTunes or iCloud is a must. This will ensure their safety even when changing the operating system, and the ability to return all saved parameters even if the operating system fails.
  • Download the eleventh version. Yes, that's right, no connection or settings are needed here, this version can be downloaded as a separate file on the developer's website or as a "hacked" one on the Internet.
  • Unzip the archive and run the setup file.

At the same time, the operating system during installation may request the removal of all your files and programs, the programs will be automatically restored after the update, but the restoration of data and personal files is only for the user.

After all, it was not in vain that a backup copy was created?

This installation method can be quite unreliable and even dangerous, in principle, just like the wired and Wi-Fi installation methods.

Updating the operating system manually is very easy, but it must be done with extreme caution. And are there other ways to update the operating system on the iPhone?

At WWDC 2019, Apple introduced iOS 13, which can be considered one of the most significant updates to the operating system for the company's mobile devices. Thanks to the changes made, the updated operating system allows regular and third-party programs to open up to two times faster than based on the current version of the OS.

The night theme is what users have been asking Apple for the most, and it's here in iOS 13. Another innovation that thousands of users have been waiting for is the support for swipe on the stock keyboard.

The integration of artificial intelligence in iOS 13 has become even deeper. Thanks to it, Siri will suggest words to you, and the Reminders app will learn from your preferences.

The site has a Dev Story section for a long time. In it, developers talk about the experience of creating their applications. But lately they have almost disappeared. Since those tube times, when games had Lite and full versions, a lot of water has flowed under the bridge, development has changed a lot. The purchase of the full version was replaced by In-App payments, and the full version was replaced by a subscription. However, leaving the nostalgia behind, this article is intended to talk about my development experience.

iOS is a textbook example of how the student surpasses the teacher, or, in our case, the child surpasses its creator. Over the years of the existence of the mobile platform, it has already left the state when Apple was still able to control the course of its development and could influence this process. Despite the fact that it is unambiguous to say at what exact moment they lost real power over iOS, with the release of iOS 13, there is practically no doubt about this. After all, what had to be done to turn, in general, a stable platform into a parody of itself full of bugs? We figure out what needs to be done to bring everything into a divine form.

Apple's responsible approach to conducting its business and its customers has become the guiding star that led it to success. As a result, today the company from has such a reserve of authority that it can afford to take a break both on fixing bugs in operating systems and on designing new products, not particularly fearing that someone will shake its position. This best confirms the widespread opinion among Apple fans that it is not it that is lagging behind, but its competitors are pushing things too fast. But be that as it may, it is still impossible to call the outgoing year unambiguously successful for Apple.
