Here either an expensive and excellent tablet from A-brands, or a cheap, but with compromises option from second-tier manufacturers. Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus series with Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor (TB-8703F and TB-8703X) appeared on the Russian market in 2017. It was located in the middle price range, i.e. These tablets could not be called cheap. A few months ago, it was replaced by the Lenovo Tab 4 8 Plus series, and the price increased even more, but the Tab 3 8 Plus tablet remained in the markets of other countries, including China. I'll tell you about this tablet today. This is a balanced and quality product from the A-brand with a price tag of about $ 120.

I myself use iPads mainly for work. But for my children, the iPad is contraindicated after the second broken one. In 2014, they got the awesome Google / ASUS Nexus 7 on Qualcomm Snapdragon S4. It was a very high quality tablet. It was mainly used for YouTube, games, browser and movies / cartoons at home and on long trips. Yes, he warmed himself like an iron in 3D games, the micro-USB connector was on its last legs, and the operating time was already running out. But he continued to serve faithfully until the children dropped him on the tiles. The screen crashed, the sensor almost completely failed. Of course, it would be possible to replace the screen for $ 20, but I wanted something new and more powerful. The choice fell on the Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus (TB-8703F) - this is a version without a 4G modem, only with Wi-Fi. Over the years of using tablets for myself, I decided that 4G support is not needed in the tablet at all, tk. there is always a smartphone at hand, and now they all know how to be an access point. Of course, for someone the presence of a modem is a prerequisite, for this case there is a TB-8703X model with 4G support (but this review will not be about it). As a last resort, Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus can work with 4G modems via USB right out of the box (I'll talk about this a little later). With points (which I have accumulated a trolley and a bag in the form of various "bonuses"), a completely ridiculous price came out in Gearbest. Right now in Gearbest Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus (Deep Blue) can be purchased for $ 121.99. A white version with a coupon BfridayRU61(there are few coupons) for $ 124.

Appearance and usability

The complete power supply unit is compact with a Sino-American plug. The maximum current is 2 A at 5.2 V. There is no support for Qualcomm Quick Charge, and it is not announced for the tablet.


Measured dimensions and weight of the tablet: 209 × 122 × 9 mm, 325 g. The front part of the tablet is covered with glass combined with the display (without an air gap). The glass is framed by an aluminum (or aluminum painted hard plastic) frame. On the front panel there are: a front camera, a light sensor, a proximity sensor and an event indicator. The event indicator is one-color - white.


On the right side are the power button and volume rocker. Both elements are made of plastic, they sit tight and rattle. They feel distinctly to the touch.


On the left side is a compartment with a micro-SD card tray.

At the bottom: another microphone and one more speaker.


The back cover is made of white matte plastic. Collects fingerprints in small quantities. In the corner is the main camera and flash LED.


The assembly is tight, nothing plays or creaks. It sits perfectly in the hands, there is no discomfort. In general, there are no complaints about the quality of materials and workmanship, but there is no feeling of a premium product, just a solid tablet. For example, when you pick up the Xiaomi Mi Pad 3, you immediately feel that you are holding an expensive and premium product.

Additionally, I bought an inexpensive tablet case for only $ 6. I don’t like covers, additional protective glasses, etc., but when a tablet is intended for children, a protective case is simply a must - this is from my own bitter experience. I thought it would be some kind of unpretentious case, but it turned out to be, without exaggeration, simply gorgeous. It is made in the form of a book with a plastic basket. The interior is velvet and the outside is soft material with imitation leather. The case contains two magnetic plates. One for closing (it also acts on the Hall sensor in the tablet). Another one for forming a triangular straight prism is a stand. The tablet sits perfectly in the case, the size of the tablet visually increases slightly.






Software

There is global (international) and Chinese firmware for TB-8703F tablet. Global firmware is also available on tablets that are officially shipped to Russia. There are no special protections in the tablet, one firmware can be changed to another quite simply. From the Gearbest store to me (like many, judging by the reviews on the forums), the tablet came with an international firmware. After launch, the system offered to update to the latest version S000030. A more recent version of S000035 was released recently, but Lenovo has temporarily disabled this update. it caused some problems.


The system is almost a stock Android 6.0.1. Minor changes have been made. With updates to Android 7, things are very hazy. The fact is that the Tab 4 8 Plus is built on a similar platform and already ships with Android 7. Lenovo makes no sense to compete with the new lineup, and the company has not explicitly announced whether there will be an update to Android 7 for the Tab 3 8 Plus. I have no complaints about the work of the current system, everything works fine.




In a clean system, there is practically no spam that A-brands adore. McAfee Security, SHAREit and SYNCit only. These programs are installed in the user partition and can be uninstalled immediately.

I will note the presence of children's accounts in the system with the control of programs, sites and working hours.





The bootloader is locked on the system. There is already an easy way to install TWRP and get root even with a locked bootloader. So, if someone needs root privileges, it won't be difficult to get them.

Screen

8-inch display. I have not found information anywhere that a protective glass is installed in this tablet. But during the time that children use the tablet, not a single micro-scratch has appeared on the screen.

Matrix type - IPS. Resolution - 1920x1200, full lamination, i.e. without air gap. The pixel structure is typical for IPS matrices.


There is an oleophobic coating, high-quality - although the prints remain, but in moderation, and are removed in one pass with a cloth. Fingers glide comfortably over the glass. [UPDATE: In the comments, some owners claim that there is no or low quality oleophobic coating. Consider this when choosing a tablet. I indicate my personal feelings in the review, and I have no complaints about the oleophobic coating].

The sensor works out 10 simultaneous touches. There is a special mode for working with gloves (of course, not all). In this case, the sensor will consume a little more power.




It is possible to change the color mode. You can use the preset options or your own. The color mode can be set individually for each application. You can turn off the color mode selection if necessary.



The adaptive brightness control works adequately in the dark and in bright light. The brightness margin of the display is good. The system has a non-switchable automatic brightness control of the backlight, depending on the color content on the screen. Those. if the screen is dominated by black, the brightness of the backlight will decrease slightly automatically.

The viewing angles are excellent. The overall brightness drops only slightly and the color temperature changes slightly. There are no diagonal black level changes.


In general, the display in the Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus is of high quality.

Locating

All major positioning systems are supported: GPS, GLONASS and BeiDou. No complaints about the work during the entire testing period were revealed. The location is always determined quickly, the signal from the satellites is confident (I checked with Navitel). The compass also always pointed correctly to the north.

Communications

There is no support for mobile networks in this model.

The Wi-Fi adapter supports 802.11a / b / g / n / ac (2.4 GHz / 5 GHz), MIMO 1x1. The connection keeps confidently, in any place of the apartment the connection was stable. Within 5 meters from the router, through one reinforced concrete wall, the tablets show a good level of speed that matches (at this point) many devices with MIMO 1x1. Tests 2.4 and 5 GHz.

The tablet supports the connection of USB Ethernet adapters and 3G / LTE USB-modems (which work on the NDIS interface) via a USB OTG adapter. What kind of USB Ethernet controllers (Realtek and ASIX), I did not begin to find out, but I checked the LTE modem from Yota - it worked without problems.


Bluetooth tested with Sven headphones, Samsung headset and Xiaomi gamepad. Everything worked normally.

Sound

I am not a music lover, but an ordinary consumer. The sound in this tablet just amazed me, I fell in love with it. Two speakers at the ends and support for Dolby Atmos (in this particular case, we mean a technology that adapts the audio stream for output on two specific speakers or headphones). They do not rattle at full volume. The sound is very loud, clear and spacious. Small details are visible. When watching movies, there really is a feeling of a multi-channel speaker system - and believe me, this is impressive. But at the same time, all the sins of low quality audio tracks pop up. If you watch, for example, BDRip with the original track AC3 (Dolby Digital), then do not find fault. But if you take a rewind film with a low soundtrack quality, then you can hear metallic notes and other wrinkle defects. In the headphones, the quality is also excellent and a large volume reserve. It is also important to note that Dolby Atmos support depends on the output device (selected by the program). For example, in MX Player HW (StageFright), everything worked, but in HW + mode, without Dolby Atmos. Everything worked in YouTube and the stock video player.


The tablet has an FM radio. Headphones act as an antenna, but the sound can also be output to the speakers. For some reason, the program interface for the radio is implemented only in portrait orientation.


The tablet also has a vibration motor. It doesn't feel as strong as in smartphones, but its presence is a nice bonus.

Cameras

Do not expect any miracles from the cameras of a budget tablet. I will briefly describe what they can do. We didn't manage to wait for a clear day, now all the days are cloudy, so the pictures came out a little gloomy. If necessary, you can download all images in full resolution from the link.

The main camera with a resolution of 8 MP and an aperture of f / 2.2, the sensor is not known. There is an LED flash that can be used as a flashlight. The camera supports HDR shooting. It does it as quickly as regular shots. All pictures can be characterized as follows: the dynamic range is narrow, the overall sharpness of the pictures is average, the noise reduction does not regret small details, there are no optical defects, the color rendition is natural, the exposure is correct. Focuses sharply and quickly. But it does not cope with macro photography (it often makes mistakes with focus when macro photography). Shooting text with flash is good. Here are examples (I added an HDR option to one frame):














Video is shot at 1080p30. Bitrate - 20 Mbps. Even in poor lighting, the frame rate does not drop and remains at 30 fps. Continuous autofocus works correctly. For a budget camera, it shoots very well. It copes even in low artificial light.



Front camera with a resolution of 5 MP and aperture of f / 2.2 and fixed. The front camera supports HDR. Video is shot at 1080p30. Bitrate - 20 Mbps. Even in poor lighting, the frame rate does not drop and remains at 30 fps. This is very important for video chats. Here's an example of a snapshot with and without HDR:



Video playback

The system has a standard video player, but it has only basic functions. For an additional test, we will use MX Player in HW (StageFright) mode to check supported hardware and system decoders.

First of all, let's check the presence of system audio decoders. For the test, I will use four MKV files with tracks: Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, MP3, AAC 2.0.
Decoder AC3 (Dolby Digital) are present at the system level, i.e. it is licensed, which is logical, since the tablet is equipped with Dolby Atmos technology. There is no DTS decoder. Additionally, I checked for an AC3 decoder in MediaCodec - it is.

Let's check support for hardware video decoders. For the test, I will use MKV files in which 1080p video has a 10 Mbps bitrate (for a tablet, this check is enough): H.264, HEVC (H.265), HEVC Main10.
There is support, in both cases it is played with good uniformity without any complaints.

Video from HD VideoBox + MX Player HW, including from the main moonwalk service in HLS streams, played perfectly. IPTV from Edem and OTTClub in Perfect Player with HW + decoder also worked flawlessly.



Internal storage, micro-SD, USB OTG

In a fresh system, about 10 GB of internal memory is available to the user. Internal memory speed is good for a budget device.


Supported microSD cards up to 64 GB (officially), but there are several reviews that not all models of 64 GB cards are seen by the device (for a specific card model, it is better to first look at the reviews on the forums). I ran all tests with a 32GB card. The installed microSD card can act as a separate removable storage device, or it can be combined into a single unit with the internal memory of the device (i.e. in my case, I get 43 GB of total internal space).


Let's check what file systems are supported on media via USB OTG and microSD in the form of a removable drive.
Let's check the capabilities of the SD controller. On the left is the result of the card working on a PC with a proven and fast card reader, on the right is the result on the tablet.

The speed is limited only by one bottleneck - the USB 2.0 interface, otherwise there are no restrictions.

Performance

The tablet is equipped with the popular Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC (MSM8953), 8 ARM Cortex-A53 cores up to 2 GHz, Qualcomm Adreno 506 GPU.


This rather fast and "cold" SoC is often found in mid-range devices. The system in Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus runs very quickly and smoothly, all programs run fast too. For clarity, I will give the performance data for Xiaomi Mi Pad 3 (MediaTek MT8176).

There was no visible throttling in games. In general, not a single test or game could significantly warm up the tablet. At the back, it was only slightly warm (I didn't even bother using a pyrometer to measure it). The previous tablet, which replaced the Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus, warmed up like an iron in any game.

Charger

The tablet comes with a standard charger with a voltage of 5.2 V and a maximum current of 2 A. Support for Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 / 3.0 is not announced for the tablet. Standard power supply with voltage compensation - as the current increases, the voltage rises to 5.35 V. This is very good, because will positively affect the charging when using different cables.

We discharge the tablet completely and connect the standard charger via the EBD-USB tester. The tablet starts to consume 9.5 watts. This continues for about 1 hour 40 minutes(stage CC). During this time, the tablet battery is charged up to 85% ... Then the charge controller goes into CV mode and charging continues for another 1 hour and 26 minutes. The total charging time is 3 hours 6 minutes.

Battery life

The working time will be estimated by the following methods:
  • Web browsing... Display brightness 75%, Internet access via Wi-Fi. In the Chrome browser, a script is launched that every minute loads a random site from hundreds of popular ones in a separate frame. The test runs until the tablet is completely turned off.
  • Video playback... Brightness 75%, Internet access via Wi-Fi. In the YouTube client, a very long video is selected (in the specific case, Fireplace for 12 hours), which is played at 1080p until the tablet is completely turned off.
  • 3D games... We will use the GFX Bench test. We charge the battery up to 85% and run the runtime test in 3D mode 3 times. We calculate the average result.

Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus is a solid family tablet from the A-brand. It has quality build and materials, an excellent display, a powerful enough SoC for many tasks (including games), great sound and good battery life. There are no complaints about the work of the software either. Of course, I would like to support Qualcomm Quick Charge for fast charging, a more solid camera, an upgrade to Android 7 ... but we are talking about a budget tablet. And for such a price, it is difficult to find something similar in terms of the totality of characteristics.

Let me remind you that the Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus (Deep Blue) tablet can be purchased at Gearbest for $ 121.99, and the white version with a coupon BfridayRU61(there are few coupons) for $ 124.

The golden age of tablets has already passed, so manufacturers rarely delight us with novelties in this segment. And this is not surprising, because modern smartphones have significantly increased in size over the past couple of years, therefore they often duplicate the functions of their larger counterparts. But Lenovo is persistently developing its line of tablets, and the manufacturer presents not only flagship solutions, but also more affordable ones, which include the Lenovo Tab3 8 Plus.

The line of Lenovo tablets is vast and rather confusing, and the Tab 3 is a whole family of variegated devices, so it's better to navigate by the code, and in our device is TB-8703X. The model was lit up in October 2016, but was presented only at MWC 2017. The tablet is equipped with an 8-inch matrix with a resolution of 1920x1200 pixels, Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC, 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB of ROM. In addition, it is possible to install 2 SIM cards, there is support for 3G and LTE (a modification without LTE is also available).

Appearance

Lenovo Tab3 8 Plus looks pretty standard, so it's easy to confuse it with hundreds of other 8-inch tablets. The only distinguishing feature worth paying attention to is the interesting soft-touch cover. The coating is rougher than a conventional coating of this type. However, this did not affect the usability in any way, and the tablet easily and naturally slips out of the hands.

Last but not least, such agility is associated with the rather impressive weight of the device. The build quality is high and when trying to twist and squeeze the case does not creak, even if it bends under the onslaught. The body of the device is protected according to the IP52 class, which implies partial protection against dust and water droplets falling at an angle of 15 °.

On the front side above the display, there is a front camera and a light sensor. There is no earpiece speaker here, which is quite reasonable, because with such dimensions it is logical to use a headset for telephone conversations. The main camera and LED flash are visible from the rear.

On the right side surface there are volume and lock keys. On the left, under a tight-fitting flap, there is a compartment for the tray for installing a pair of SIM cards, one of which can be replaced with a microSD data carrier.

The tablet has a pair of speakers on the top and bottom ends, which allow you to experience stereo sound when the tablet is oriented horizontally. There are also a couple of microphones: one at the bottom, the other at the top. The upper part also houses a mini-jack (3.5 mm) audio jack and a micro-USB connector, which looks at least strange in the device presented in 2017.

Display

The 8-inch display has a resolution of 1920x1200 pixels, i.e. ratio 16:10. This aspect ratio is a bit unusual, especially in light of the latest trends in smartphone screens, in which the aspect ratio is increasingly shifting towards theatrical. The theatrical aspect ratio is good for viewing media content, but 16:10 is still more suitable for working with documents, so it should be noted as a plus of the tablet. The display supports up to 10 simultaneous touches. Unfortunately, there is no oleophobic coating.

The maximum display brightness by the standards of smartphones and tablets is low - 384.71 cd / m 2. This level is clearly not enough for working with the tablet outdoors on a sunny day. To measure the brightness of the black field, I had to go to a little trick because of the dynamic non-switchable brightness control, which sharply reduces the backlight level when the screen is filled with black. To obtain correct data, a set of black and white fields in a checkerboard pattern was displayed on the screen, after which a measurement was made. The result is 0.36 cd / m 2. As a result, the static contrast ratio is 1069: 1. With the minimum brightness of the backlight, the luminance of the white field is only 7.66 cd / m2, which is not enough even when working with the tablet in a dark room. The color temperature in the entire luminosity range is in the range of 7190-7543 K. This is slightly higher than the reference value, but not at all critical. The color gamut is slightly off the standard sRGB color space. The DeltaE color deviation on the gray scale is in the range of 0.6 ... 9.7, and on the primary colors (RGBCMY) - 3.5 ... 14.8.

Sound

The tablet is equipped with a pair of speakers, which is the exception rather than the rule for tablets. Of course, just by installing a pair of speakers, you will not be able to get a plus in karma right away, because you need them to sound as well. When playing a sinusoidal signal with a frequency of 1 kHz at a distance of 1 meter from the tablet, a level of 85.1 dBA was recorded. By the standards of mobile devices, this is a good result. Moreover, when set to the maximum level, the sound is clear and detailed, without obvious defects such as hiss, crackles and the like. The body of the device does not resonate, for which you need to thank the plastic panels and high-quality assembly. Unfortunately, the bass is too tough for a couple of small speakers, but otherwise, especially compared to other tablets in its price category, the subject sounds good.

The analog audio output is very high. When playing a sinusoidal signal with a frequency of 1 kHz and operating at a 32 Ohm load, the result was 446.6 mV. Not a record, but very good. Unfortunately, each time you plug in your headphones or headset, the volume is automatically reduced to an unacceptably low 37.9 mV. This level is not enough even when using headphones with an impedance of 32 Ohm, but for some reason the developers considered it to be the maximum possible for safe listening.

The SoC's built-in Qualcomm Aqstic audio codec formally supports 24-bit audio at up to 192 kHz sampling rates. Unfortunately, the tested tablet produced a rather distorted signal when playing audio with a sampling frequency of more than 48 kHz. However, most of the music is distributed with a sampling rate of 48 / 44.1 kHz, so in this feature, in fact, there is nothing to worry about. Audio quality testing at the analog audio output was carried out using the Creative E-MU 0204 USB external audio interface and Right Mark Audio Analyzer (RMAA) software in 24-bit / 44.1 kHz mode. As a result, the overall mark was "excellent".

Overall results

Performance

The tablet is based on Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, made on the 14 nm FinFET LPP process technology, which in theory should provide low battery consumption. This is an 8-core solution (Cortex-A53) in which all cores run at up to 2 GHz. Responsible for the video subsystem is Adreno 506. The volume of single-channel RAM type LPDDR3 933 MHz is 3 GB. The volume of ROM in the tested modification is 16 GB, which is not always enough, especially if you store video files in the built-in memory. Fortunately, the memory can be expanded with a microSD card, and it will not be as painful as in the case of smartphones, because the tablet does not need 2 SIM cards by and large. .

System performance was measured in synthetics PCMark, 3DMark, Geekbanch 4 and AnTuTu v6. Memory speed was evaluated using the AndroBench application. The opponents were the Lenovo P2 smartphone, built on the same system-on-a-chip as the hero of the material, ZTE Axon 7 mini, based on Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 and Moto M based on SoC MediaTek Helio P10 (MT6755).

Testing was also carried out in cross-platform javascript tests (Mozilla Kraken JavaScript and SunSpider). The results of these tests significantly depend on the browser used, therefore, to minimize the impact, all reviews will use Google Chrome as the most common.

Camera

The tablet is equipped with an 8 megapixel main camera with an f / 2.2 aperture. In general, after one glance at the characteristics, it is clear that the tablet is not capable of surprising something. In practice, he is able to take good photos in bright sunlight, but only if there are no zones with a large difference in brightness in the frame, otherwise the dynamic range is sorely lacking, and the camera does not automatically switch to HDR mode. The flash consists of one, but rather bright LED, which provides illumination of 34.1 lux at a distance of one meter. Let not a record, but very good.

The photo control program does not impress with an abundance of settings, but it is still possible to change the basic parameters of photography, namely: activating the flash, activating the recording of geodata, choosing the resolution and quality, setting the self-timer, activating the face detection function, selecting the sensitivity level and setting the white balance, compensation exposure.

Controlling the camera using the Camera 2 API is impossible, just as it is impossible to shoot in RAW, so measuring the noise level of the matrix is ​​essentially meaningless due to too aggressive noise reduction. To assess the image quality, the test pattern was captured with all available sensitivity values. Below are the crop fragments.

To evaluate the resolution, it was decided to add a test pattern shooting at different illumination levels, namely: 1000 lux, 20 lux and 3 lux with flash. Based on the obtained images, the resolution was determined in cycles per pixel (one cycle is one dark and one light line) in the central part of the frame (MTF50).

Measuring 208 x 123 x 8.8 mm and weighing 326 grams, the Tab 3 8 Plus is neither too big nor too heavy. It will easily find its place in the bag without adding extra weight and is also easy to use. The tablet's size makes it a little tricky to use with one hand, but the tablet's rounded corners promise comfort.

Its dimensions allow you to use an 8-inch screen with an acceptable bezel size for such a tablet. The screen-to-body ratio is 70%, which suggests the tablet could have been a little smaller, but that's not a major issue.

The layout of the buttons remains standard. The volume and power / lock buttons are on the right side of the tablet, but their size difference ensures you don't mix them up. At the top of the tablet, on the left-hand side, you'll find a slot for that also allows you to add 64GB of storage.

The headphone jack is located in the upper left corner and the Micro-USB slot in the upper right corner. Of course, the tablet will not do without a simple camera at the top of the panel. The main camera and LED flash will be found in their usual places.

Lenovo tablet is made of a plastic shell with a soft matte finish, which gives the tablet a nice look, perfectly complemented by a metal frame. The material feels a little slippery, so it makes sense to invest in a case to provide the best grip, depending on how you plan on using it.

The screen panel is not protected by traditional Corning Gorilla glass and, as mentioned earlier, the body of the tablet is made of plastic, so keep in mind that it may need extra protection if you plan to borrow or travel with the tablet. The plastic shell, however, is water-resistant and also good at resisting dirt. On the screen and on the back, you'll find your own fingerprints galore.

The Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus has much higher specs than what we usually see in budget tablets. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 (MSM8953) 8-core chipset clocked at 2.0GHz and an Adreno 506 GPU. It is available with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, although as mentioned above you can add 64GB memory using a card.

Similar specs you'd expect to find on a mid-range tablet, the benchmarks below are on paper.

Despite all these promising features, the Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus suffers from common tasks, especially when they require the Internet. Browsing the web and scrolling through social media seems incredibly slow. This is something to keep in mind if you are going to use your tablet in a professional environment.

The tablet works much better when you use it for entertainment. It loads videos quickly and promises pleasant gaming performance, even with tricky titles like Asphalt 8. You can also use it to read e-books, listen to podcasts, or watch movies without any lack of efficiency.

The screen quality is determined by the IPS panel with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels, which provides a density of 283 pixels per inch, which is above the average for budget tablets of 220 PPI. You can enjoy movies and video content with sharp colors and decent brightness, which is a very positive feature of the Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus.

The tablet offers four display modes: Media, which enhances colors for the best visual experience; Reading, which lowers the brightness of the tablet; Kids that changes colors and brightness for superior eye protection and of course Custom Mode.

The main and front cameras are 8 MP and 5 MP, respectively, which, again, is above average. Overall quality is acceptable, but nobody buys a tablet simply because it takes good photos.

The Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus has a 4,250mAh battery, which is smaller than most budget tablets, but promises a day of use with traditional use. Note that the Tab 3 8 Plus does not offer fast charging, although it charges at a very reasonable rate (100% battery will return in about 2 hours).

Unlike Amazon's budget tablets, the Tab 3 8 Plus is powered by giving users access to Google Apps and Google Play. The screen displays apps that are similar to what Android users are used to, and the controls aren't too problematic.

The software design of the Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus is pretty standard: in the apps menu, you can press the round button and scroll once to access the notification bar notifications, swipe twice on the screen and you'll see the notification bar with shortcuts to quick settings. Three touch buttons give you access to the usual commands: the middle one will return you to the home screen, the left one back, and the right one will open recently used applications.

You'll also find apps that Android users are used to, along with some new additions. The Tab 3 8 Plus offers a Parental Controls app that includes Kid Mode. This solution allows you to set up a personalized profile for each child, choose which apps the child can use, enable Safe Browsing, whitelist certain websites, and even limit the amount of time a child can spend on a tablet.

Google Voice Assistant is available as a shortcut on the home screen, as well as some apps included by Lenovo. The manufacturer offers SHAREit, a file transfer application, and SYNCit, which allows you to back up your device. If they are of no interest to you, you can easily remove them.

The tablet is, of course, compatible with Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth, and some models offer SIM inclusion, although this is not the case with the Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus in our review. Note that the Tab 3 8 Plus lacks a fingerprint reader and NFC, which is common in the budget tablet segment.

Summing up

The strength of the Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus is the quality the tablet offers when it comes to entertainment features. The large and high-resolution display, coupled with gaming and video performance, make the tablet an enjoyable and strong contender in the budget category. However, the Tab 3 8 Plus's poor Internet test scores make it clear that it cannot be used as a professional tool. Design

At first glance, the Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus does not come across as anything out of the ordinary. This is a pretty standard compact tablet. The front panel resembles the Nexus 7 2012 or 2013. The dimensions of the tablet are moderate, but in my subjective opinion, the frames around the display are a bit big; they could have been made slightly smaller.

Front Panel

The front panel of the Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus is completely black. The main part is occupied by an 8-inch IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. The aspect ratio is 16 to 10. The oleophobic coating, if present at all, is of some very low quality. Above, we have a 5-megapixel front camera (sorry, not centered), a proximity and brightness sensor, and an alert sensor (very large and only in one color).

The front has no rounded edges. There is a small side around the entire front panel. Good or not - it's hard to say. On the one hand, when people put a tablet with a screen on some surface, for example, on a table, then this side protects the screen itself. On the other hand, when using the Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus, you will constantly bump your fingers against this collar. For me this was not a problem, but still touching this side with your fingers every time does not cause pleasant sensations. Probably, it would be better if it weren't.

Rear panel

The rear panel houses an 8-megapixel camera, which protrudes from the body by about 1-1.5 mm. There is also a flash, a hybrid slot for two SIM cards (nano + micro) or for one microSD card and one SIM card. The slot has a rounded cover with the Lenovo brand inscription on it. By the way, this is the only Lenovo inscription on the tablet.

At the bottom of the back panel there are two crooked stickers with different information, for example, IMEI number and country of origin. Many people, including me, have a question - why glue such stickers? It's not even that they are crookedly glued, but in general in their presence. They do not carry any useful information, but they greatly spoil the appearance. Moreover, it is almost impossible to tear off the stickers.

Peculiarity

The most interesting design feature of the Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus is its back cover. It is made of matte blue plastic, which is pleasant to the touch. Everyone who we gave this tablet to hold in their hands said that the matte back cover is very cool. Plus, it doesn't leave fingerprints, unless your hands are very greasy. And in general, the matte part is not only on the back of the tablet, but on all sides. We can't say it adds style or a premium look, but in practice, matte plastic is very comfortable.

Side faces

There is nothing on the left side of the Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus, except for the continuation of the SIM card slot. On the right side are mechanical buttons such as power and volume controls. They are made with high quality, no complaints. They are pressed well and do not swing.

On the top, we have a 3.5 mm audio jack for headphones, a second microphone, one of two stereo speakers and a micro USB jack. On the bottom of the tablet, there is a main microphone and a second stereo speaker.

Assembly

Overall, the Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus is very well executed. If you lightly drum your fingers on the back cover, you will hear that there is a millimeter space under the cover. We may be picking on a little, however, such things make themselves felt after a while of use.

Hand comfort

This tablet is really comfortable to hold in one hand. But, as we wrote above, the frames around the display could be made smaller, thus reducing the size of the tablet. The thickness is not that great, but some competitors can make such tablets 2-3 mm thinner, and with even more battery capacity.

Iron

The Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus runs on the 64-bit Qualcomm MSM8953 Snapdragon 625 platform. This processor comes with one 8-core ARM Cortex-A53 cluster, where each core can be overclocked from 652 MHz to 2.0 Hz.

The Snapdragon 625 is paired with the Adreno 506 graphics accelerator at 650 MHz. This combination allows you to run almost any game, even at ultra high settings.

In terms of storage, the tablet offers 16GB of internal storage. If you want and have money, you can use an external microSD memory card up to 256 GB. Does anyone use that much memory at all? If so, write about it in the comments. But the RAM is 3 GB.

Tests

In tests, the Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus performed well. The GeekBench 4 single core benchmark scored 860 points, while the multi-core benchmark scored nearly 3000 points. Graphics tests show 3362 points, which is quite a good result for a tablet. The situation is similar in AnTuTu, where the tablet managed to score 61647 points.

Screen

The Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus has an 8-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 16 million colors with support for up to 10 touches. The screen covers 70.7% of the front of the tablet. Its resolution is 1920 x 1200 pixels, so the pixel density is about 283 PPI.

The screen looks good on paper, but in practice it makes a pretty cheap experience. Lenovo probably wanted to save money on this.

The tablet has a big problem with brightness. Despite the fact that the maximum brightness is enough to watch YouTube videos outdoors in clear weather, but at night, at minimum brightness, the screen is too bright. For my eyes, this is a real torture. When going from 100% brightness to 0%, the difference is not that great.

Games

With games, the Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus has no problems at all. Everything works well and flawlessly. We launched many different toys, from free to paid, from powerful to simple. Everything works well. Here we must pay tribute to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, and the Android 6.0 operating system, which is well optimized for this hardware. With prolonged gameplay, the tablet starts to heat up, but not critical.

Cameras

What can you expect from cameras in a tablet? Surely most of us don't need cameras in a tablet at all. At least on the back.

Lenovo seems to have the same opinion on this matter, so it didn't bother much about the decision. Both cameras, both front and rear, take good photos and videos. For Instagram, this is quite enough.

Lenovo has put more emphasis on the rear camera. It has a resolution of 8 megapixels, while the front one is 5 megapixels. I don't know about you, but I almost never use the rear camera. The front camera can sometimes be useful, for example, for Skype video calls.

Networks

The Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus has support for Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n / ac in 2 channels, as well as Wi-Fi Direct and hotspot (hotspot). There were no complaints about working with the Internet at all. Everything works very well.

In addition to Wi-Fi, the tablet has a GSM, HSPA and LTE mobile internet module.

Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus supports two nano-SIM cards. This means you can use your tablet like a regular phone. Ask why? I do not know. Perhaps some people will decide to save money on buying a smartphone and immediately take the 8-inch Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus tablet.

Sound

Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus is equipped with two stereo speakers. They are located on the side edges, as a result of which the sound diverges on both sides of you. Sound quality is questionable. Maybe someone will like it. As for the volume, they are very loud.

The sound from the headphones was just awful until we ran Dolby Atmos with an equalizer. After that, the sound from the headphones turned into a chic work of art. Nevertheless, it is rather strange to make a separate function that must be additionally enabled in order to get high-quality sound from headphones. Not everyone knows about Dolby Atmos and how to use it. Why can't this be done by default?

Operating system

Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow operating system. This is actually a pure "Andryusha" with various additional "findiklyushkams" from Lenovo. Everything works flawlessly. There were no problems for the entire time of use.

The tablet was introduced not so long ago, at the beginning of 2017, and it remains a mystery to us - why Android 6.0 and not the latest version? Updates to Android 7.0 Nougat are unlikely, so the user will have to enjoy what they have.

Battery

Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus is equipped with a 4250 mAh battery. It should be noted that the tablet is almost 9mm thick. Strange, isn't it? If it were Meizu or Xiaomi, they would have managed to use the same battery in a 5 or 6 mm case. Alternatively, cram a battery twice as large into a 9mm case.

In terms of battery life, a full charge should be sufficient for a full working day. Thanks to a good processor, pure Android and good optimization, Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus shows very good battery life.

Output

The Lenovo Tab 3 8 Plus is a really good tablet. Among the positive qualities, it is worth noting a pleasant to the touch back panel, hardware, a clean version of Android, optimization, battery life. This set is enough for the user to be ready to run to the store.

At the same time, we cannot but say about the minuses, which are not so many. This is a typical design and rather thick bezels around the display, stickers on the back, a hybrid SIM card slot and a microSD memory card.
