Many people try to dry their device with a hairdryer, but this is an ineffective method of dealing with moisture.

Instructions for saving your phone:

  • Remove it from the water immediately. Remove the back panel and remove the battery

Instructions:

  • Remove the phone from the water and quickly remove the cover
  • Remove the battery, add dry rice to a bowl
  • Immerse the device and battery in rice. Cover everything with cereal

    The phone must be removed from the water as soon as possible. The speakerphone ports, the hole for the microphone, charger, USB cable, as well as the gaps between the phone and the plastic charging cover allow water to flow freely in a few seconds. The phone must be removed from the water and turned off immediately, as water that gets into it can cause a short circuit.

    If the phone was in the water for only a few seconds, then there may be no consequences. Even if you wash your phone in a washing machine, there is still a chance to save it. Before buying a new phone, it is worth trying all the methods described in this article.

    • If your phone falls into water while it is connected to a charger, removing it from the water yourself can be dangerous. This requires the help of a professional who will take the necessary measures and do it safely (most likely, you will need to turn off the electricity to the entire house). Water is an excellent conductor of electricity, so rescuing your phone yourself may result in an electric shock. However, if the phone was not connected to the charger, then you can remove it yourself - this should be done as soon as possible.
    • Do not panic. If you remain calm, you will do everything quickly and correctly.
  1. Immediately after removing the phone from the water, you need to wipe it with paper towels or a soft cloth, then remove the cover from the phone and remove the battery. This is one of the most important points in saving your phone. Many circuits inside the phone are not affected by moisture unless they are connected to a power source (battery) when they get wet.

    • SIM cards are quite resistant to water damage. However, it is worth removing it and wiping it dry, setting it aside and allowing time to dry until the phone itself is ready for use.

    • This is the fastest method and can completely dry your phone in just thirty minutes. However, if contact with water was enough long, then this method is unlikely to help.
    • You should not bring your phone too close to the vacuum cleaner hose, otherwise static electricity will form, which is even worse for the phone.
  5. Do not use a hair dryer to dry your phone. It may seem surprising, but use a hair dryer Not recommended (even not in the “gentle” mode). Using a hairdryer can blow moisture from the surface further into the phone, this is especially dangerous for electrical components hidden deep inside the phone. And if the air from the hair dryer is too hot, then its jet can melt some parts of the phone.

    • If moisture gets inside the phone, then the chance of corrosion of individual elements and their oxidation increases, especially circuits that contain minerals are at risk. Ultimately, this may cause your phone to malfunction.
    • There is no need to blow air into the phone; on the contrary, a stream of air should blow out the water. From Bernoulli's law it follows that warm, dry air, moving quickly over the phone, reduces the static pressure of the compressed air, which will not allow all the moisture to be blown out of the phone. The main conclusion that follows from this is that you can spend several hours in a row trying to dry your phone with a hairdryer and not achieve the desired result.
  6. Use a substance that can draw out moisture. An inexpensive option is to place the phone in a bowl or bag of uncooked rice overnight. The rice will absorb any remaining moisture.

    • Effectively use products that absorb moisture. One of the best remedies is rice. You need to place the phone in a plastic bag and fill it with rice, then to create an airtight seal, the bag needs to be sealed (you can use a plastic container). Also included in materials that absorb moisture is silicone gel - often found in small bags in a box with new shoes, handbags, and so on. Moreover, those bags that have been stored in boxes with shoes or clothes for some time have probably already exhausted their absorbent properties. The phone should be left in the desiccant container at least overnight.
    • While the phone is drying, you need to turn it over from time to time so that the water that inevitably flows down has a better chance of finding its way out of the phone through all sorts of cracks and holes.
  7. Place the phone in a sunny place to allow all openings of the phone to dry completely.

    The phone should be left on absorbent wipes or paper towels, even if it has previously been vacuum-dried or placed in a container of rice. This will help absorb any remaining moisture from the device.

    • It is worth checking the phone, placed in a container with absorbent material, every hour for the first 6 hours. If moisture has collected on the surface, you need to dry it again with paper towels or blow it with a vacuum cleaner.
  8. Phone check. After at least 24 hours, make sure that the external appearance of the mobile phone is dry. It's worth checking all the ports, compartments and slots. If your phone looks dry and clean, you can replace the battery and try turning it on. Pay attention to possible strange sounds and noises that accompany the switching process; if there are any, this is a sign that the phone is not functioning properly.

    If the phone looks dry, but does not turn on, then the battery may have run out. If the phone turned on after it was charged, then the battery was probably damaged by water and should be replaced.

    Do not try to disassemble the phone yourself. Leave this to the professionals, as such experiments can lead to short circuits or poisoning from harmful chemicals contained in some elements of the mobile phone.

    • If the phone turns on, but does not work properly, then it is likely that moisture has damaged some elements. Remove all covers, take out the battery, memory cards and SIM card - you may find corrosion. Then it needs to be cleaned off the surface of the affected parts using a clean, dry brush or toothbrush.   9. Buy a protective phone case. This case will protect your phone from damage during falls, as well as from water ingress. For touch screen phones, a protective film is a must!

  • Moisture is primarily dangerous for the internal circuits of the phone. If you manage to turn off your phone before the water reaches them, then most likely you will be able to save it!
  • Sometimes in stores you can find kits designed to resuscitate a wet cell phone. It is better to purchase one in advance so as not to waste time when an emergency occurs.
  • If the phone has been damaged by salt water (for example, dropped into the sea or ocean), then it is necessary to wipe it with clean water so that salt crystals at least do not remain in the battery connector.
  • Never vacuum a wet object. You may get an electric shock.
  • Excessive heat may damage your phone. Most phone instructions warn against leaving the device in a car in the summer or exposing it to any other heat. The most important thing is to dry your phone before charging it. Using a vacuum cleaner, you can dry your phone in just 20 minutes; you need to blow air from all sides of the phone, constantly turning it.
  • You can use a vacuum chamber if you can find one, for example in schools and universities. Of course, it is unlikely that everyone can use the training equipment, so arrangements will need to be made first. In such a chamber, water will “boil” even at room temperature after sufficient time has passed, and therefore will evaporate, even if it is not heated. This method will work if you keep the phone in the camera for at least 30 minutes. This way, those parts that are difficult to access will also dry out.
  • Since in this case the phone cannot be repaired under warranty, you can try to disassemble it into parts to dry them more effectively. Buy special screwdrivers and prepare a dry, clean toothbrush. Spray all parts with compressed air spray and/or a vacuum cleaner for a few minutes and then put the phone back together.
  • It is very important to continue to dry your phone from time to time, even if it seems that it is already quite dry. This is wrong. Placing your phone in front of a running heater or fan for an extended period of time will help dry it more efficiently. You need to overcome the desire to use your phone to check calls, messages or just play. It should be left alone to dry for several hours.
  • Alcohol treatment of the phone is useful - you need to remove all parts (battery, SIM cards, etc.) and put the phone face down in a container with a small amount of alcohol. This won't damage your phone, but will help dry it out and evaporate moisture.
  • Another option is to keep the phone at body temperature for several hours. That is... closer to the body.
  • Take your phone with you if you plan to fly on an airplane. Very dry interior air is great for drying your phone.

  • Do not heat the battery; it may leak or explode. Lithium-ion batteries are sensitive. If you use a hair dryer, be sure to remove the battery before drying your phone.
  • If you use alcohol, be sure to do it outside. However, you should not apply heat in any form to the phone. Do not insert the battery until the smell of alcohol has completely disappeared.
  • Even if the phone was dried, the water could have time to damage the internal elements, subjecting them to corrosion. The phone's components are located so compactly inside the phone that even one drop of water is enough to cause a short circuit.

What happens during electrochemical corrosion?

A little theory...
Metal conductors in the phone lose some of their atoms (they pass into the electrolytic solution in the form of ions), electrons replacing the lost atoms charge the metal with a negative charge, while the electrolyte (an electrolyte is a liquid that conducts electric current) has a positive charge. A galvanic couple is formed: the metal is destroyed, gradually all its particles become part of the solution. Accordingly, the solution becomes conductive, which subsequently short-circuits the conductors covered by it.
For the process of electrochemical corrosion, it is not at all necessary to immerse metal conductors in an electrolyte - a thin electrolytic film on its surface is sufficient. Simply put, it is not necessary to drop your phone into water; a damp environment is enough.

If liquid gets into your phone...

Liquid ingress and mechanical damage (falls, shocks) cause the most severe damage to your cell phone. Therefore, to restore the device in this case, repairs of the highest category of complexity are required. We often encounter a situation where a client brings a wet device with the words: “Please clean the phone, it’s a little wet and now it won’t turn on.” However, not many people realize that any cell phone (even the oldest one, released several years ago) is a complex electronic device, the operation of which is controlled by digital and analog processors, RAM and Flash memory chips, and numerous peripheral devices (display controllers, keyboards, audio -controllers, etc.). Let's not forget that the most important function of a cell phone is to provide stable and high-quality communication; this task is performed by a separate functional module, or radio unit, which consists of a special processor (or several processors) for processing high-frequency signals and numerous components of the transmitting and receiving path. A malfunction of any of the listed modules can lead to serious disruptions in the operation of the phone, or its complete failure. With any, even minor, ingress of liquid, when only a few drops have leaked inside, electrochemical corrosion rapidly occurs on the components of the system board for several minutes, which stops only when the battery is completely discharged (hereinafter referred to as the battery), or when the liquid evaporates.

What to do if liquid does get into the device?

1) Immediately remove and do not reinsert the battery! This will avoid the most serious damage. Remember, while the battery is removed, electrochemical corrosion processes do not occur, and damage to the phone’s system board will stop. At the same time, you should not try to charge the device if it does not turn on - this will significantly aggravate the current situation.
2) Promptly contact a qualified service center (hereinafter referred to as “SC”) for diagnostics and repairs. During this time, the battery must be removed.

If you are sure that very little liquid has entered, or there is no way to contact a service center, try to carefully dry the device. For this purpose, under no circumstances should you use heating devices (hair dryer, heater, etc.), as well as a microwave oven! Dry the device, avoiding heating above the temperatures specified in the instructions and observing the described operating conditions; dry the battery only at room temperature. It is impossible to dry the device well in 5 minutes, or even in 5 hours. It takes more time, no need to rush. After completing the operation, try to turn on the phone, check charging, communication, and all other functions. Everything is working? This means that you are lucky, carefully monitor the behavior of the device for several days, and in case of any problems, immediately contact the service center. If the device does not turn on, or there are any malfunctions, contact the service center immediately.

One of the misconceptions, which undoubtedly reflects national ingenuity, is the assertion that a wet device should be washed with vodka or alcohol. This is absurd. From vodka that gets inside the device, the alcohol will evaporate much faster than water, and the situation will only get worse. Washing with any alcohol-containing liquid, including “pure” alcohol, will not remove or stop the corrosion that has begun.

Let's look at the nature of damage caused by liquid ingress using the example of a device that came to us for repair. Nokia N70.

Severe corrosion leads to damage not only to external elements, microcircuits and conductors. The motherboard of any cell phone has a complex multilayer structure; conductors from the outer layers go inside the motherboard to connect electrical circuits in different parts of the board. It is extremely difficult to identify and eliminate on-board breaks caused by rotting conductors, and often completely impossible.
Corrosion leads to oxidation of the solder; the products of this reaction can cause short circuits in various electrical circuits. This is dangerous due to the failure of electronic components, including those not subject to corrosion, as well as the appearance of the so-called “leakage” - a significant increase in energy consumption (sometimes even when turned off), which leads to a rapid discharge of the battery, reducing the operating time of the device.

This photograph also shows numerous damages and signs of extensive corrosion. In this case, the electronic micro-BGA component (it functions as a backlight controller) is severely damaged. This electronic component must be replaced and the area underneath it thoroughly cleaned. There can be a lot of such small micro-BGA components in a modern phone.

Thus, restoring any device after liquid ingress is a very labor-intensive and complex process, the success of which is largely determined by your correct actions when a malfunction occurs. In general, the repair of any flooded device must be considered strictly individually and it is IMPOSSIBLE to immediately say about the possibility and cost of repair!!! It is imperative to diagnose the device, identify damaged units and/or components, as well as thoroughly check the operation of the device after replacing these components. This type of repair requires the presence of modern equipment and highly qualified engineers in the service center, therefore, Dear Customers, do not repair your phones in unknown and unqualified “workshops”. Remember the old saying: “The miser pays twice!”

When most of us come to the sea, lake or just a public swimming pool, we take our phone/smartphone and other electronic equipment with us.

A slight splash of water is usually not a serious problem for him, but sometimes it happens that our “ward” likes to fall into the water and stays there for a long time and this at the least expected moments.

What to do? It can usually be saved, although not always, especially if you do something wrong during the rehabilitation period.

The worst thing is if a Lenovo, Samsung Galaxy, HTC, Asus, Nokia, Huawei or iPhone phone falls into the water and does not turn on. If, for example, only the sensor, camera, microphone, speaker, etc., so to speak, only one element does not work, and it is also charging, then naturally there are more chances.

If it doesn’t turn on at all, as was the case with my Samsung and I didn’t take action right away, then the situation can be tragic.

I did not take action because I did not know that water had gotten into the smartphone. It didn’t fall into the water - I just walked around in the rain for a bit, then when I got home I put it in its usual place and picked it up only the next day.

This was enough to prevent my Samsung with Android OS from turning on. Then I made another mistake, although I knew about it firsthand.

However, I have an excuse, because I didn’t know that water got into the phone and thought that the battery was just dead.

Naturally, I connected the charger, which was impossible to do, although perhaps it was already dead.

In a word, my Samsung smartphone not only never turned on again, it was also beyond repair.

What to do when your phone falls into water and does not turn on

As you know, water and phones (electronic devices) never go hand in hand, and in this unequal battle the phone may no longer turn on.

There is no 100% guarantee that after swimming you will be able to restore the device to full physical readiness, but your quick actions can make a difference.


The main thing is to pick up the phone from the water as soon as possible. The sooner this is done, the less water will get inside the device and the less chance of “destruction”.

The next step is to immediately remove the battery (if, of course, the phone design allows it).

Short circuit is the most common cause of equipment failure.

So you can't waste time turning off your phone - which can take a few seconds - get rid of the back cover and remove the battery quickly.

The situation is different when the phone is built in one piece (the battery is not removable). Then the battery cannot be quickly removed and we can only rush to take the phone to the service center.

However, devices like the Xperia Z, Galaxy S4 or S5, Xcover 3 or even the flagship Galaxy S7 are considered more "advanced" devices, have the appropriate durability certifications and are basically waterproof (resistant to being completely submerged in water for a certain period of time).

If your mobile phone is turned off, it is tempting to try to turn it on to check - don't do this.

On the contrary, remove the SIM card and memory card. They store your personal data and you may lose it.

Therefore, removing them should come second after removing the battery. Then open up all the nooks and crannies you can, such as the cover covering the MicroSD card slot or USB port.

The next step is to thoroughly clean and dry the device. You can use a towel, cloth, or similar things that quickly absorb water.
