Starting from version 9, the AI file format is in fact a duplicate of PGF, in which compatibility with PDF is achieved by creating a complete copy of PGF data in the desired PDF file. The same “ear tricks” are used when saving EPS-compatible files in current versions of Adobe Illustrator.

Thus, in current versions, the AI file is the same PDF, but, as with previous versions of the format, a number of additional functions used by Illustrator.
