Very often, car owners of a car with HBO installed are faced with the need to view / correct some parameters of the gas “brains”. For this purpose, you need to have a special tester (which is very expensive and not economically feasible for private use) or you need a diagnostic tool in the form of a laptop with installed software and a cord to connect gas "brains" and a laptop. Branded cords that are commercially available are not cheap, so you can try to make a cable for HBO with your own hands. How to do this and where to get the components of the future cord for HBO will be discussed in our article.

Actually, the diagnostic cable for HBO itself consists of:

A connector for connecting to the “gas” brains pad (in our case it is a standard one) a 4-pin waterproof car connector that can be bought at an auto / radio store or ordered from Aliexpress, as we did. The price of one connector was about 60 cents.

Next, we need another USB type A connector for the subsequent connection of the finished HBO cable to the laptop. This connector can also be bought at the radio store or ordered from Aliexpress. This connector cost us $1.10.

You will also need a 3 or 4-core copper cable 3-3.5 meters long. It is advisable to use a stranded wire (so that each cable core is wound from several) - this will greatly extend the life of the finished cable in the future, due to the fact that the cores will break much less.

It is also better to buy heat shrink in the radio store (for cable insulation).

The “heart” of our cable for matching the signals of the laptop and the “brains” will be the PL2303 chip. It is best to buy not a “bare” microcircuit, but a ready-made USB to TTL module (it will contain the necessary microcircuit with the necessary additional elements soldered) in the same radio store or we order from Aliexpress. With us, this module came with a USB connector, it is best to choose just such an option, it is easy to assemble, and later such a cable for HBO will look much more aesthetically pleasing.

We collect the cable

Having prepared all the components, it remains to assemble them into a single whole. This must be done according to the diagram below.

In our case, everything is much simpler. The Chinese manufacturer indicated in the documentation for the module a description of the connector and the corresponding wire color:

• black cable - GND;
• green - TXD;
• white - RXD;
• red - VCC.

Therefore, everything boiled down to crimping and soldering wires to a 4-pin connector. We used 3 wires:

LVTTL voltage level of 3.3V on the TXD line of the chip is quite sufficient for reliable communication with the HBO controller. The length of the cable is enough for comfortable work with a laptop in the engine compartment.

To avoid damage to the equipment, we recommend that when connecting the AMP Superseal 1.5 (4-pin) connector to the diagnostic connector of the HBO controller, check the compliance of the colored power wires:

• black must connect to black (this is "minus" or GND);
• red from the HBO controller (this is 12V) is not used and should not be connected to any of the wires of the adapter;

The polarity reversal of the remaining two wires is not fatal. And it only affects the temporary lack of communication between the PC and the controller. When the correct connection is restored, the connection will be restored.

On the POLETRON 26/3 STANDART controller, the colors of the RX and TX wires correspond to the colors of the adapter (that is, they match).

If there is no connection, if there is doubt about the correct connection of the RX and TX lines, we recommend disconnecting our connector from the diagnostic HBO and using a voltmeter to check for a voltage of 5 volts in the RX line (white wire) of the diagnostic connector of the HBO controller.

A voltage of 5V relative to the mass of the car must be on the terminal corresponding to our white wire (because in fact this is the transmission line TX of the HBO controller).

Our goal is to configure the HBO unit, for this the manufacturer offers special Lovato Easy Fast software, it cannot be downloaded from the official website, but can be found on the net. After a little googling, I realized that the HBO cable is nothing more than a USB → UART converter. And this means that it is easy to find ready-made options or even assemble it yourself.

So, 4th generation HBO has already been installed on our car, it needs to be configured. Let's start with the connector, it can be found near the HBO block. It is hidden under a black cap and looks like below. It is to him that we will connect.

Correct connection of the HBO cable to the connector:

There are 2 types of pinouts for this cable on the Internet and they contradict each other. If I had a voltmeter at hand then, Va-Bank went :) As it turned out, if you mix up and connect the mass of the HBO cable to the +12 connector, nothing bad happens, but it’s better not to be mistaken like that. Rx and Tx can be confused in places. The Rx and Tx of the adapter must be connected to the Tx and Rx of the LPG, respectively, i.e. cross. It is absolutely clear that the cable will work only after the correct connection of all the pins.

Where can I get a USB to UART converter?

You may be surprised, but a data cable that costs about $100 can be made by yourself for $3. In fact, this cable is nothing more than a USB → UART adapter with special TTL levels. The PL2303HX chip does an excellent job with this task:

To connect to the Lovato HBO connector, it is very convenient to use DIP pins, you can buy it at any radio parts store or order from AliExpress, they can be broken and used one at a time.

Solder wires to these pins and your adapter. I recommend making the wires long enough so that you can configure the HBO from the car interior, this is required for online configuration, more on that later.

For the adapter to work, we install the driver (you can download it from the website of the developer of the Profilic PL2303HX chip). If you are using a pirated version of the microcircuit, the drivers will be installed, but will not work, this problem is solved by installing an earlier version of the driver (you can download it at the end of the article). You can check the performance of a freshly assembled cable with the Com Port Toolkit program. The working program is conditionally divided into two parts: the left panel is the transmission, the right is the reception.

Short the Rx and Tx pins together, so anything you send through this cable will be immediately accepted by it. In the left panel Com Port Toolkit try sending a few bytes, if the same bytes are displayed in the right window, then the cable is working.
