And a movie with an original track and subtitles is not always possible to find. Fortunately, finding subtitles for a movie and attaching them is not a very difficult process. Let's try to do it today on the example of the movie "Forrest Gump".

So I managed to find and download a movie with two audio tracks, one of which is in English, but the subtitles are only Russian. By the way, it is interesting that not all of this is located in one file. The film is a folder "Forrest_Gamp", which contains three files:

Forrest_Gamp.avi- Video along with English audio track.
Forrest_Gamp.MVO.ac3- Russian soundtrack.
Forrest_Gamp.srt- Russian subtitles.

The player finds files with the same name in the same folder and merges them. It's easy to guess that if you add another file with English subtitles, it will also be connected and available during playback.

Open Yandex and write forrest gump subtitles. The second link I found led to the English Forrest Gump subtitle - By bdkkecoh - Subscene page where I downloaded the subtitle file. Opened it with the text editor "Notepad" to make sure the content was as stated. All OK.

Move the file to the folder with the movie and rename it according to the name of the main file with the video track. We already have one file with subtitles, and if we do not want to simply replace it, but add another one, then we must change their names by adding the name of the subtitles between the file name and the extension. I did like this:

It should be said that there are two types of desynchronization of subtitles with a movie:

time shift - when the subtitles are in a hurry or late from the words of the actors for the same time throughout the film;

For different cases, you can use different solutions, but we will not complicate our life and consider a method suitable for all cases. So we launched the program Subtitle Workshop... If the English language of the interface does not suit you with something, select Settings -> Language -> Russian in the main menu.

Now we press " File" -> "Upload subtitles"and choose our" Forrest_Gump.en.srt". The program will open the subtitle file and find a video file with a similar name, and the movie itself too.

If your movie did not open for any reason, you can open it in any other player. Wait for the first phrase in the movie, which is displayed in the first subtitle, and write down the exact time when it should appear. Then, similarly mark the time when the last subtitle appeared.

In the program menu Subtitle Workshop select " Editor" -> "Time" -> "Align" -> "Align subtitles"(you can just press Ctrl + B).

In the fields " First text" and " Last text"write in the values for the first and last subtitles from the previous step.

Click " Align!"

1. Usually it is not difficult to find subtitles for the selected film in a foreign language. Therefore, we will proceed from the fact that the bourgeois text is already available on your hard disk. There are a lot of different resources on the Internet, littered with subtitles, for example, you can try to search through our sites section.

2. In most cases, subtitles are distributed in zipped form, compressed using WinRar or WinZip. The archive contains one or several files - depending on the version of the movie (one or several discs). Sometimes, in addition to subtitles, the archive contains files with additional information or files with settings for a video player, for example, BSplayer. The required text is contained in the file with the SRT or SUB extension. If files with such an extension are not found in the archive, do not be discouraged - sometimes subtitles have a different extension, the format is just not widespread. In any case, the vast majority of text subtitles are understood by Subtitle Workshop.

3. Launch Subtitle Workshop, and open the subtitles in it that you want to translate. We took the movie "X-files: fight the future" as an example.

4. Before starting to translate, it is better to evaluate the quality of the available subtitles at this stage. If you come across low-quality subtitles, it's easier to fix or change them now. By clicking Ctrl + I or by choosing from the menu Tools-> Information and errors you will be able to find out how many errors the credits contain. Most attention should be paid to those lines that contain intersections ( overlap) and erroneous values ( bad value). When there are many such lines, it is better to try to find another version. It often happens that the subtitles found are the only option. Then you have to bring them to mind. Go through all the errors and fix them. Unnecessary voids and points can be corrected automatically, but the rest is better done manually. Although the author of the program has already done a good job on the logic of correcting subtitle intersection errors, there are situations when the good old "let's do it with pens" will not allow you to fatally spoil the file. When you correct the intersections and confused values - lengthen the display time of titles on the screen. Very often it is too small to have time to read the text. It is good practice when no subtitle is shown on the screen for less than one second. If the subtitle is long - two lines of 30-40 characters each, you can safely put 4-5 seconds, the main thing is that this does not create an overlap in time with the next subtitle. There are two ways to lengthen the display time: through Duration limits (Ctrl + L), or through Time expander (Shift + Ctrl + I).

5. Let's go to translation mode by pressing the key combination Ctrl + U or by selecting the item from the menu Edit-> Translation-> Translator mode... An additional column will appear in the list, and an additional window for entering text will appear in the lower part.

6. First, let's save the files so as not to bother ourselves with this in the future. Press Shift + Alt + T, or choose from the menu File-> Save-> Translated as ... Since the translation has not yet been saved, after choosing the format (it is preferable to save the work in the Subrip format - the SRT extension), you need to select the file name. The names of the original and translation are displayed in the header of the main window.

Both files are now on the hard drive. It's a good idea to combine them into one project to make your work more convenient. Press Shift + Alt + P, or choose from the menu File-> Save-> Project... Projects saved from the Subtitle Workshop program have the STP extension. They store the path to each of the project files, the path to the video file, the position in the text, and the like.

7. Now is the time to try to translate the first phrase. It is not difficult to do this, but the problem is that the program does not display the Russian text correctly!

We climb into the program settings Settings-> Settings-> General-> Charsets... For both the original and for the translation, it is better to choose the Russian language (russian) - the Latin letters will still be displayed correctly, and in the future we will not need to set the encoding again if we work only with Russian subtitles.

8. Basic settings are made, you can translate. It is better that the subtitles do not contain lines longer than 40 characters. Some video players cannot display subtitles with three or more lines. Therefore, you have to redo them.

The program shows the length of the lines and the total length of the subtitle.

9. If the translation cannot be squeezed into the allotted 2 lines of 40 characters each, it is better to split the subtitle into two.

Russian text is usually longer than English.

By clicking Shift + Ctrl + D or by selecting the menu item Edit-> Texts-> Divide lines we will be able to split the current subtitle into two chunks.

The start time of the received first subtitle coincides with the start of the subtitle being split. The end time of the received second subtitle is the same as the end time of the split subtitle. It only remains to determine at what point in time to divide.

10. When the translation of the text is finished, save the project and the source / translation files. It's time to try to see how the translation fits into the picture. Select a video file by clicking Ctrl + P or from the menu Movie-> Open ... A picture from the file will appear in the program window. By default, the original subtitles will be shown on the screen. You can switch to displaying the translation by selecting Movie-> Display-> Translation.

11. If all subtitles are shown clearly at the right time, you can save your work and do a spell check. Before bringing your work to the public, it’s not a bad idea to watch the film again - this time with your translation. Often times, ridiculous mistakes can be detected at this very moment. :)

12. At the end of the translation, you can add one or more subtitles with information about the translator.

13. Give the file a name that speaks for itself. It is very good when, in addition to the name of the movie, the file name contains the year and the abbreviation of the target language. For example, like this: Xfiles_Fight_Future_Rus_1998.Srt Use only Latin letters, numbers and underscore in the file name. Never use Russian letters and spaces in the file name, otherwise some users may have problems and they will not be able to open your file.

14. Find a movie on the IMDB website. Do not be lazy to type a small text file, where you can place a link to information about the film, the translator. Advertising if you want. :) Now the subtitle file and the information file can be zipped, for example, using WinZip.

15. It is not a shame to show such work not only to friends, but also to strangers. Therefore, the vastness of the Internet is open to you. Post the translation on your favorite site.

What if you were unable to automatically find subtitles in the language you need for your movie? Well, we are looking for subtitles manually by the title of the movie. It makes sense to start a search from the opensubtitles.org website, because subtitles for your movie may be on it, but the computer did not find them, because The rip of the video file of the person who uploaded the subtitles to the site is not identical to your rip of the video file.

So, you have found subtitles in the language you need for your movie, but they are not synchronized with your video file. Various options are possible here:

1) You have subtitles synchronized with your movie. Using any text editor, you open these synchronized subtitles and write out the timing of the first and last cues (only the time when these cues begin). After that you run the program Subtitle Workshop(see the section "Programs for editing subtitles"). Choose in the menu "Edit" - "Timings" - "Adjust" - "Adjust subtitles ...". Enter the timing you have written for the first remark in the "First spoken line" box, for the last remark - in the "Last spoken line" box. Press the "Adjust!" Button. The program will automatically shift the timing of the subtitles, stretching or compressing it if necessary. Everything! You can watch a movie!

2) You do not have subtitles synchronized with your movie. Then we open the movie in the player (for example, in Media Player Classic) and start watching it, carefully following the time counter. As soon as the first remark sounded, press the pause and mark the time when the actor began to pronounce it. We go to the end of the film and in the same way mark the time when the last remark begins. Then we proceed in the same way as described above, in option number 1.

When synchronizing methods 1 and 2, check what the first and last subtitle are in the subtitle file you are synchronizing. Sometimes it is the title of the movie (at the beginning) or the name of the company that created the subtitles (at the end). These subtitles must be removed and only after that start synchronizing according to the first and last lines of the characters in the film.

3) If your version of the movie is split into 2 files, and the subtitles are designed for one video file, then this is what we do. Run file # 2 of your movie and remember the first spoken line. In any text editor, open our file with subtitles, find this replica, physically split this file into two, and save both files. The second file should start with the replica you found. After that, we do the same as written in paragraph 2.

4) If the subtitles are split into 2 files, and your version of the movie is in the form of one file, then here's what you can do. Rename both subtitle files as follows: "The Matrix (1999) .english_CD1.srt" "The Matrix (1999) .english_CD2.srt" (the movie file is "The Matrix (1999) .avi"). After that, we synchronize with the video file first the first subtitle file, then the second (see point 2 above). After that, launch the Subtitle Workshop program and select from the menu: "Tools" - "Join subtitles ...", click on the "Add" button, add the first subtitle file, then the second, and click on the "Join!" Button.

Whichever of the above methods you sync the subtitles, the quality of the new subtitles must be checked. The fact is that in different releases of the same film, some scenes may have been included, and some may not. Therefore, it is necessary to check the quality of synchronized subtitles not only by the first and last remarks, but also in other places (points four to five per film). You need to check the finished subtitles in the players Media Player Classic or VLC media player(program Subtitle Workshop for these purposes it is better not to use it - it often shows video and subtitles not synchronously).

If you've manually synced subtitles with any version of a video file, be sure to upload those subtitles to opensubtitles.org!

This can be done: 1) Through your browser, on the opensubtitles.org website. 2) Through the program SubDownloader... After downloading the program, on the left, select the "Upload" tab (it is advisable to log in at the same time, if you have previously created an account on the opensubtitles.org website). Click on the "Browse avi ..." button, select the video file with the movie, click on the "Browse sub ..." button, select the subtitle file (of course, the name of the movie file and the subtitle file must match). Press the "Confirm" button - the program checks if your subtitles are already on the site. If there are no subtitles, then select the subtitle language and movie ID on The Internet Movie Database. Finally, we press the "Upload" button and wait patiently while the program uploads our subtitles to the site. After that, the program will offer to open a web page with a link to the subtitles you downloaded.
