Windows 10 default printer how to make. How to set the default printer. How to fix - The default printer cannot be set

Many of you, for sure, have already installed various kinds of devices in Windows 10 more than once, and most likely, in most cases, everything proceeded “in normal mode” for you, since the “ten” has very high-quality software in the face of an installer that does everything practically without a hitch. But there are situations when the printer being installed cannot be set as the default printer, which actually leads to a lot of problems. In such a situation, you need force set printer as default in windows 10.

First, let's try to go to the "Classic Control Panel" section → "Devices and Printers" → manually install the "Primary" printer:

If the above method does not help you, then it's time to move on to using the registry tweak in Windows 10. First, you need to install the printer → select the installed printer as the default device, but not using the Windows interface, but directly. Open the "Registry Editor" using the "regedit" command → go to the following path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows → find the string parameter "Devices" and double-click on it → replace the line so that before the element ",winspool," was the name of your new printer.

In this example, we are using the "Bullzip PDF Printer" printer, and therefore the line from the previous step will look like this: "Bullzip PDF Printer,winspool,Ne03:"

And the last step, you will need to do the following: go to the application section "Device Settings" → "Printers and Scanners" → disable the option "Let Windows manage the default printer". This step will prevent the operating system, after the final choice of the default printer by the user, from replacing it with the one that it considers the most appropriate.

Instruction

To set the default printer, click Start or the Windows button in Vista and Windows 7 operating systems. Then select Settings and Control Panel. In Windows Vista and Windows 7, you can directly select "Control Panel".

Next, in the "Control Panel" find the "Printers and Faxes" section. In Windows 7, under Hardware and Sound, select View Devices and Printers. If the Small Icons mode is selected in Windows 7, go to the Devices and Printers section. Now double-click on the desired printer, then go to the "Printer" menu and check the "Set as default" box.

For convenience, if you think that you will have to periodically change the default printer, you can move the Printers and Faxes folder to the desktop or taskbar for quick access. To do this, right-click on this folder in the "Control Panel", then click "Create Shortcut".

If you only use one printer all the time and don't need all the others, then another option to solve the problem is to remove these printers. To do this, right-click on the printer you want to delete and click "Delete" and then OK.

Sometimes it is not possible to immediately remove the printer in this way. In this case, check if a print job has been sent to it. You can see these jobs by simply clicking on the printer icon. If they are, wait until the end of printing, and then repeat the deletion procedure. You can also turn off/on the printer and delete all print jobs (they might have stuck). Usually after that the printer can still be deleted.

Helpful advice

If the printer is set by default, if there are multiple printers on the computer, all print jobs will be sent to it. To do this, it will be enough to click on the print button in the program used.

For a long time, printers have firmly entered our lives. They can be found in every office and in many homes. But the printer cannot be used standalone, in order to start working, it must be connected to a computer.

You will need

  • USB cable.

Instruction

Most printers do not come with a USB cable, which is required to connect the printer to a computer, so make sure to purchase one in advance. Its length should be 1.8 or 3 m. Long, 5 m cables do not work with all printers, so it is better not to use them.

After you have unpacked the printer, you need to insert it into it (or if the printer is an inkjet). Remove the cartridge from the package, remove the protective film or paper from it, and install it in the printer. More information on how to do this is written in the instructions.

Insert the driver disc into your optical drive. Autorun will work and a menu will appear (if autorun is disabled, then go to the disk and run autorun.exe or setup.exe). The autorun menu for different printers may be different, you need to select the installation of drivers from the options presented. If for some reason the drivers were not included in the kit, then you can download them directly from the manufacturer's website.

When the installer copies the necessary files, it will offer to connect the printer to the computer. Take a USB cable and connect the square connector to the printer and the rectangular connector to the computer. Then turn on the printer. The computer will detect it and continue the installation.

If the printer is a laser printer, then you will be prompted for a test page. After it is printed, you can get to work. If the printer is inkjet, then before you start working, you need to calibrate it. The printer will print small designs, after which you will need to enter the results that most closely resemble the printed design. After the calibration is completed, the printer will be ready for use.

You have purchased a printer. But where to start getting acquainted with the long-awaited technology? Understanding the operation of the device is not always easy. Sometimes problems arise even in the matter of turning on a new printer. Use simple tips, you will surely succeed!

Instruction

Take the instructions supplied with the device. Typically, such manuals clearly and clearly explain the procedure. Sometimes there may even be detailed pictures or photographs. Read the instructions and find the appropriate button.
If suddenly, for some reason, it is missing or written in an unfamiliar language, then try to find the power button yourself. Usually it is located on the front of the case and has a distinctive externally distinctive badge or the name "Power". Sometimes it has the shape of a classic lever-switch and is located on the side or back of the case.

If you are sure that it was detected correctly, but the printer is still not working, then double-check that the device is connected to the network. Follow the wire from the electrical outlet to the device, check the connection of all cables. Make sure the outlet is working and there is electricity in the room where you are.
Don't disregard this advice. Maybe you just forgot to turn on the surge protector.

Some printer models will only start working if the ink cartridges are installed correctly. Check, referring to the instructions, whether they are in place in your device.

If the above tips did not help, then the device is probably really faulty. In this case, you should contact the technical support of the manufacturer of the printer you purchased. Alternatively, you can put the printer in its shipping box and take your purchase back to the store after explaining the problem to the sales assistant in detail.

Helpful advice

Never turn on the printer immediately after having just turned it off. Unlike a personal computer, for which a reboot is not harmful, printers are very sensitive to the on and off procedures. Wait at least 10-15 seconds before restarting the device.

The main task of the user connecting a printer or MFP is to ensure the most convenient work with this device. To do this, you need to take into account some subtleties.

How to install a printer on Windows 10 is currently a hot topic among users, because in the new OS, unlike the classic OS management system, functionality and settings have been significantly updated. The same applies to connecting peripheral devices: this procedure looks completely different, because the graphical interface and settings are very different from, for example, what was in Windows 7. Therefore, such issues of connecting a printer to a computer have become relevant and need to be considered in detail.

In general, to connect a printer using a USB cable, in the vast majority of cases, the whole procedure boils down to the fact that the operating system will independently find all the necessary drivers, the user only needs to wait for the installation process to complete. Another thing is when you need to connect the device via a wireless connection: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth. Let's see how this can be done using the example of the Canon Pixma G3400 printer, which has the ability to connect wirelessly to a computer.

To begin with, you should pay attention to the fact that this printer model is connected wirelessly using WPS technology. This suggests that you first need to go to the router settings and enable this technology. For the D-Link Dir-615 router, this function is located in the tab shown in the screenshot.

After that, it is necessary to connect the printer to the local network, to which the computer (laptop) must also be connected. To do this, press and hold the Wi-Fi button on the printer until the orange LED blinks once and then the blue Wi-Fi sensor lights up. In fact, this will indicate that the connection between the router and the printer will be configured, and, accordingly, the printing device will be included in the local network.

After the done actions, turn on the computer, and then:

  • click on the "Start" button and click on the "Settings" icon, which is shown as a gear. Next, in the new window displayed, select the "Devices" item.

  • in the next window on the "Printers and Scanners" tab, click on the "Add" button;
  • initially, the device may not appear in the list, so now you need to follow the link shown in the screenshot;

  • after that, set the bullet on the 4th point (see the picture) and click next;

  • a search will be carried out in the next window and, after a certain time, the Canon Pixma G3400 will be displayed in it;
  • after clicking on the "Next" button, the driver installation process will be launched and when finished, the system will automatically set this printer as the default for printing.

In general, setting up a wireless printer from other manufacturers is not too different from the above. By and large, the difference will be only in the web interface of the router and the inclusion of wireless capabilities on the printer itself.

As you can see, if you follow clear instructions, the connection procedure does not require special skills and even an ordinary user can perform it. At the same time, it is worth noting that this process is completely different from what needs to be done, for example, in Windows 7.

Installing a printer in Windows 10 using a CD

If at the moment the user does not have an Internet connection, then it will be impossible to complete the installation using the aforementioned method (including the connection), since the operating system simply cannot download drivers. In this case, you can use the CD that comes with the printing device without fail. For this:

  • insert the CD into the CD-ROM and make it autorun;
  • a window will appear on the screen in which you need to click "Printer Setup" (in distribution kits from other manufacturers, this button may be "Install" instead);

  • then strictly follow the instructions, which will be clearly described and what the choice of one or another item may lead to.

As a result, even without the Internet, the output device will be available for printing from a computer.

A few words about the virtual printer in Windows 10

Many who work in Windows 10 are often interested in what is and why the printer displayed in the device manager, Microsoft Print to PDF, is needed. In fact, this is not exactly the kind of printer that appears in the classic version. With it, you can, for example, save certain browser pages in the popular PDF format, that is, it is not a physical printing device, but a virtual one, and only virtual pages are created with it.

In general, as you can see from the instructions, there is nothing complicated in installing a printer in Windows 10, but the installation approach itself differs significantly from previous versions of the OS.

Microsoft has tried to simplify the process of adding a printer to Windows 10. Now that the process is automated, the connection should not be a problem. Most printing devices are connected to a PC via a USB port and often work as soon as you plug them in (and many work wirelessly!). A new printer device may also come with a driver disk.

For the user, the connection should be fast. The streamlined process mainly relies on automatic discovery and identification. When everything is working correctly, the installation will only take a minute or two.

Here's how to add a printer

Sign in to your Windows computer with an administrator account. Connect your print device to your PC. Click the Start button on your desktop. From the Start menu, select Settings. In the Options window, open Devices. Once the Devices window opens, make sure the Printers and Scanners category is selected.
In the right pane, click Add Printer or Scanner.

Wait while the operating system searches for the connected printing device. When Windows finds it, you can click on its name and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process.

If the operating system cannot detect the connected printing device, click "The printer I want is not listed". In the "Find a printer with different settings" window, click the "Add a local or network printer with manual settings" button using the manual toggle.

Note: If you are an advanced user, you can also select another option from the "Use an existing port" drop-down list.

In the Driver Installation window, from the displayed list of manufacturers on the left side, click to select the one to which the connected printer belongs. On the right side, select the specific model of the printing device connected to the PC.

Note. At this point, you can also click the "Have Disk" button and find the required driver. Click "Next" to proceed to the next step.

In the Enter a name field, enter an informative name for the printer and click Next. In the Sharing window, make sure Sharing is selected so that other network users can find and use it. If you don't want to share your printing device with network users, you can select the appropriate option. In the Share Name field, enter a short name.

Note. The name you enter here will be displayed to remote users when searching for this printer over the network.
Optionally, you can fill in the "Location and Comment" fields. Click "Next" to continue.

On the last page of the wizard, click the "Print Test Page" button to verify that the connection is correct and that it functions correctly. Click Finish to complete the process.

Printer manufacturers can not develop a single procedure for installing printing devices in a computer. That is why installing a printer in Windows 10 can be done in one of the following ways.

In some cases, you will only need to connect the printer to the appropriate port on your computer (usually USB) and wait a bit. Windows 10 will automatically find and recognize the new device, then connect it and get it ready for use. You just have to fill the printer with paper, ink or toner.

Many manufacturers, seeking to remain as independent as possible from software developers, require the installation of special software of their own writing to successfully connect printers to a computer. If such software is not installed on the computer before connecting the printer with a cable, the printer will not work. Printer troubleshooting guide: Troubleshooting Windows 10

Fortunately, to determine how to install the printer on your computer, just look at the documentation that came with it. (Most often, printer setup instructions appear on a separate sheet of paper titled Quick Setup.) If your printer did not come with instructions for connecting to your computer, insert the cartridge(s), load paper, and then follow these steps:

After booting up your Windows 10 computer, connect the printer to it with a separate cable and power it on (turn it on). After a while, Windows 10 may notify you that the new hardware has been successfully installed. Do not be seduced ahead of time and check the operation of the printer by following the instructions below.

Open Options. Right click on the button Start and select the command from the context menu Control Options.

Category Equipment and sound click on the link View devices and printers. You will see a list of all devices connected to the computer, organized into separate categories according to their functionality. If you're lucky, you'll find a newly connected printer in it.

In this case, right-click on its icon, under which the model name is indicated, and select Printer Properties from the context menu. In the dialog box that appears on the screen, click the Test Print button. When you see a sheet of clearly displayed text appear from the output tray of the printer, you can accept congratulations. Printer installation completed successfully!

Test page does not print? Make sure there is no paper jam in the printer feed mechanism and there is enough ink (toner) in the cartridge. If the test print still fails, the operating system most likely does not recognize the print device. Contact the printer manufacturer's representative in your area or an authorized representative of the store where you purchased the printer for assistance.

To output a document as a print file, which must first be sent as an attachment to an email message and only then printed, use the Save as Adobe PDF command. This command will produce a PDF file that retains the original formatting of the document and is fully printable as it appears on the screen. Files of this format are supported and open on any desktop computer, laptop and tablet. (To view and print PDF files, use Adobe Reader https://get.adobe.com/en/reader/

Connecting multiple printers

When connecting multiple printers to your computer at once, you need to identify the primary print device in Windows 10. To do this, right-click on its icon (in the Devices and Printers window) and execute the Set as default command. As a result, print jobs from all running programs and applications will be sent to this printer by default.

  • To remove a printer from the operating system, right-click its icon (see step 3 above) and select Remove device from the context menu. The printer icon will be removed from the list of available devices and you will no longer be able to use it to print files that are opened in Windows 10 startup programs. If a prompt appears on the screen asking you to confirm the operation to remove the software associated with the printer, then click on the Yes button in its window.
  • Printer settings are changed not only using the tools of the Control Panel folder, but also in many programs that support printing their files. Typically, the command to change printer settings is performed from the program's File menu (to display the menu bar in the program window, sometimes you need to press the key ) and is called Page Setup or Print Setup. In the dialog box that appears on the screen, you can change settings such as paper size and orientation, fonts used, headers and footers, and many others.
  • To share the printer with other computers on your network, first create a homegroup. Please note that after performing such an operation, all users of the home network, without exception, will be able to use the printer.
  • If the software supplied by the printer manufacturer does not work as you expected, use the built-in help system to find the cause of the problem. The tips in it are more valuable than the general advice of the Windows 10 help system.
