Ease of use. Comparison of top Samsung Galaxy smartphones on Exynos and Snapdragon processors A new level of gaming

Today we will talk about how to recognize the Samsung Galaxy S8 processor. This operation may be required, for example, when checking the smartphone for authenticity, or when searching for a suitable alternative firmware.

1. Check by model number

The model number of the form SM-G950* (Galaxy S8) or SM-G955* (Galaxy S8+) can be found, firstly, on the box with the smartphone, secondly, on the back cover of the device, and thirdly, in the system information (“ Settings" -> "About device" -> "Model number").

If you have one of the following: SM-G950F, SM-G950FD, SM-G950K, SM-G950L, SM-G950S, or SM-G955F, SM-G955FD, SM-G955K, SM-G955L, SM-G955S, then inside Your Galaxy S8/S8+ is equipped with an Exynos 8895 mobile processor.

If the model number is in the following list: SM-G9500, SM-G950J, SM-G950A, SM-G950P, SM-G950R4, SM-G950T, SM-G950U, SM-G950V, SM-G950W or SM-G9550, SM -G955J, SM-G955A, SM-G955P, SM-G955R4, SM-G955T, SM-G955U, SM-G955V, SM-G955W, then your Galaxy S8/S8+ is based on Qualcomm Snapdragon 835.

Minus: on a fake for a Samsung Galaxy S8, in principle, they can write any model number. Yes, and sewing it into the firmware is also, in general, not difficult. Therefore, a more “deep” check is required.

2. Checking with CPU-Z

The popular CPU-Z utility displays detailed information about the hardware of a smartphone, including its processor. The app is free and can be easily installed from the Google Play app store.

All the necessary information is present on the SOC and DEVICE tabs. If it says Exynos 8895 or Snapdragon 835, you have a real Samsung Galaxy S8. If not, it's a Chinese hack, most likely based on one of the MediaTek chipsets.

Alternatively, you can use popular benchmarks like GeekBench and AnTuTu, which also highlight detailed information about the "stuffing" of the smartphone.

The highlights of the Samsung Galaxy S8 are the Infinity Display and the stunning new design. Of course, it still packs the latest hardware and technology like previous Galaxy smartphones, including retinal recognition, wireless charging, and a flagship SoC. In fact, for the S8 and S8 + models, there are two different main ones. Most regions around the world will receive Samsung's Exynos 8895, while those countries that require a CDMA modem, such as the US and China, will receive Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835. Both SoCs are built on a 10nm process and feature 4GB LPDDR4 RAM and 64GB UFS NAND.

So far, no one has received any kind of new model through official channels, given the speed of delivery by sea. So the obvious question to ask is: which SoC and therefore which smartphone is better? What are their differences?

To answer these questions, today we'll take a look at the performance differences between Snapdragon 835 and Exynos 8895. We'll also look at how well they perform with other Galaxy S8 hardware and software by evaluating system performance, responsiveness, and battery life.

The first thing we noticed is that the Snapdragon 835 has Kryo 280 performance cores that are based on ARM's Cortex-A73, while the performance cores use Cortex-A53. The Samsung Exynos 8895 also has an octa-core big.LITTLE CPU, but uses four native M2 cores paired with four A53 cores. Samsung introduced its first M1 processor core last year. Compared to ARM's A72, the overall IPC is similar, but the M1 was outperformed by the A72 in terms of efficiency. In all likelihood, the M2 is not a radical redesign of the M1, but rather a slightly modified version of it. Will this be enough to beat Qualcomm's flagship SoC?

One of the most important metrics for a smartphone is battery life. Plenty of cool features and fast-paced lightning-fast games won't alleviate the disappointment if your phone is dead by noon. This issue was present on the Galaxy S6, which came with a small capacity battery, which contributed to the disappointing battery life. Samsung has increased the capacity of its batteries for the S7 models, but for the S8, the capacity has remained the same at 3000 mAh, and for the S8 + it has even gone down by 100 mAh compared to the S7 edge. Therefore, any improvement in battery life for this generation of smartphones from the Korean company will come at the expense of more efficient hardware. But as far as we know, Qualcomm is actively promoting this idea ...

Previous Galaxy smartphones performed well, but some shortcomings in terms of power did not allow them to become the class leader. Will updates in software and hardware be able to mitigate these shortcomings? Will efficiency improve with the 10nm process? Has Samsung reduced power consumption in other areas? It's time to take a closer look at the Samsung Galaxy S8.

On March 29 in New York, Samsung presented its new flagship: the Galaxy S8 smartphone and its modification Galaxy S8 Plus (Galaxy S8+). The devices were expected both by experts, anticipating new improved features and technologies in the package, and by consumers, who were hoping for an unusual design. But for Samsung itself, this is more than ever a reverent and important development. Representatives of the company said that they call the Galaxy S8 "dream" ("dream"). And there are reasons for this. Firstly, Samsung needs to rehabilitate itself after the disastrous 2016, the industry-remembered fiasco of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. Such a “spot” on the reputation will not be erased for many years, which only reinforces the degree of responsibility for the quality of the Galaxy S8. With no room for error anymore, Samsung is investing a lot of effort, time and money into the new flagship. The Galaxy S8 needs to be more than perfect to make up for itself and the $2 billion failure of the Galaxy Note 7. Second, the company intends to end years of competition with Apple with a clear victory for its Android flagship.

How justified are Samsung's claims to leadership, what new unique characteristics the new smartphone is endowed with, and whether the Galaxy S8 has a chance for consumer loyalty, we will consider further.

SpecificationsSamsungGalaxy S8 andSamsungGalaxy S8 Plus

The eighth Galaxy immediately attracts attention with a bold innovative screen. It is practically devoid of a frame, only from the top not reaching the edge by a couple of millimeters. In this regard, it seems that the manufacturer got rid of the home page keys, but in fact they are built into the screen itself. Samsung has been faithful to the design of smartphones with smoothed corners for many years, and in the Galaxy S8 this style has been preserved. The display is curved to both sides, improving visibility. The manufacturer endowed the novelty with a Quad HD + Super AMOLED resolution with a rich color gamut and at the same time economical power consumption. The screen diagonal of the Galaxy S8 is 5.8 inches and 6.2 inches for the Galaxy S8 Plus. According to Samsung, this is the maximum size of the device, which is in high demand.

The Galaxy S8 has an improved biometric security system, namely an iris scanner. Despite the frameless screen, the manufacturers still managed to place an 8 megapixel front camera. The main camera received 12 megapixels. The main camera is dual with f 1.7 aperture. The system is able to take 3 photos at the same time, and then choose the best one.

The model will be implemented with different processors depending on the distribution market. For Europe, devices with the Exynos 8895 chipset are planned, for other markets - with the Snapdragon 835.

A heart rate sensor and a fingerprint scanner are installed on the back of the case. This placement of the scanner is "exotic" of the company, since it is usually located on the right side of the rear cover.

It is worth noting that the Galaxy S8 uses Bixby artificial intelligence. Bixby is a voice assistant that goes beyond Siri and Google Assistant. Through it, you can control not only the smartphone itself, but also other Samsung devices. For example, smart watches.

Of the many characteristics of Samsung Galaxy S8 should also highlight the following: the flagship has Qi and PMA wireless charging and ip68 waterproof protection. The ip68 standard allows the smartphone to work at a depth of up to 1.5 m for about half an hour.

The flagship manufacturer presented a modest color scheme: white, black, gray and silver.

Galaxy S8 features. Expected innovations in technical specifications of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 plus

Galaxy S8 screen

The technologically advanced screen is definitely one of the highlights of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. Resolution 18.5:8, instead of the classic 18:9, allowed the manufacturer to smooth out the impression of a "shovel". But, in addition to this, the flagship is endowed with a number of other exceptional features that make it so expected in the market.

Bluetooth 5 Galaxy S8

In 2016, the latest generation of Bluetooth specifications were adopted. The eighth Galaxy was the first smartphone to support Bluetooth 5. Among other things, the standard allows you to transfer music to two devices at once. For example, on Bluetooth headphones or speakers. In this case, the sound in one device is regulated independently of the other.

Galaxy S8 Processors

The manufacturer developed the flagship with a reserve for the future. The device can work in gigabit networks, which are not yet in commercial operation. Both the Snapdragon 835 and Exynos 8895 processors, which support the Snapdragon X16 LTE modem, provide this opportunity.

Biometric Security Galaxy S8

One of the most important characteristics of the Galaxy S8, which distinguishes it from other smartphones, is a high degree of biometric security. The flagship uses three similar sensors at once: a fingerprint scanner, an iris scanner and face recognition. They are installed for different purposes, but the iris scanner has received the widest functionality.

Galaxy S8 as a computer

Samsung was the first company to commercialize Android's multi-window interface. Glory went to the Galaxy S8, which can be used as a computer by connecting to a monitor. This opportunity will especially appeal to fans of games.

Galaxy S8 battery

Special attention deserves a smartphone battery, made using a unique technology that allows you to save its power. As a rule, the capacity of the battery decreases during use by 20% per year. For the Galaxy S8, this figure will be, according to the manufacturer, only 5%.

Cons of the Galaxy S8

Galaxy S8 screen

The advantages of the Galaxy S8 can also play a cruel joke with it. First of all, it concerns an unusual screen. Potential users fear that the design is inconvenient for one-handed use. In addition, the lack of frames on the screen can provoke accidental touches. The manufacturer aims to avoid this shortcoming by making the home button embedded in the screen pressure sensitive. The user in the settings will be able to adjust the pressing force at which it will work, as well as the strength of the vibration response.

Scanner Galaxy S8

Another disadvantage is the location of the fingerprint scanner on the rear panel.

Galaxy S8 battery capacity

Despite the fact that the flagship batteries are unique in terms of operation, their capacity is quite low.

As you know, Samsung will release versions of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 + on two processors - Snapdragon 835 from Qualcomm and its own Exynos 8895. Most likely, devices with a Qualcomm chip will be sold in the US, and with Exynos - in all other countries, including Russia . How much will we lose? Or vice versa - Exynos is better? Let's figure it out.

The benchmark site Geekbench has published the results of testing two variants of the Samsung Galaxy S8 + smartphone - the first is equipped with a Qualcomm processor, and the other is the latest chip of Samsung's own design. It is worth noting that both of them are assembled at Samsung factories using the same 10-nanometer FinFET technology, moreover, the Korean company helped Qualcomm specialists and took part in the development of Snapdragon 835. Who made the greatest contribution to the creation of this chipset is unknown, but obvious that Snapdragon 835 and Exynos 8895 use similar solutions. Both processors are 8-core, but Snapdragon runs at a higher clock speed - 1.9 GHz versus 1.69 GHz for Exynos.

In the single-core test, Geekbench beat the Exynos 8895 - it scored 1978 points, and the Snapdragon 835 - 1929. In the multi-core mode, the lead is even greater - 6375 versus 6084 points in favor of the Samsung processor. Single-core mode is considered more important because most Android applications cannot fully distribute a process across multiple cores. Geekbench tests 52 device parameters. Exynos 8895 turned out to be more productive in 35 parameters, and Snapdragon 835 only in 17.

Geekbench ranks the Exynos 8895-powered Galaxy S8+ as #1 in multi-core performance of any smartphone. It is ahead of all other flagship smartphones, including the Google Pixel XL, LG G6 and Apple iPhone 7 Plus. Both versions of the Samsung smartphone managed to overtake the Huawei Mate 9 with a Kirin 960 processor. In single-core mode, the Exynos version of the Galaxy S8 + takes second place - only the Apple iPhone 7 Plus performs better than it.

According to rumors, Samsung is going to increase the clock speed of the Exynos 8895 to 2.5 GHz, as well as install two additional video processor cores in the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 +, which means that the performance of these smartphones can be even higher. In addition, versions of these devices will be released in China with six gigabytes of RAM instead of four - their performance in synthetic benchmarks is likely to be a record. However, it is worth bearing in mind that these are only preliminary figures measured on early versions of smartphones. Devices that go on sale may show different results.

The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will be unveiled on March 29th. The filling of these devices will be the same, they differ only in size, screen sizes (5.8 and 6.2 inches) and battery capacity (3000 and 3500 mAh).
