Smartphones manufactured by Asus have already managed to prove themselves from the best side. So, these devices have gained fame as reliable, stylish, functional phones, which are also available at a low price. This is what makes them so popular in the market.

In today's article, we will talk about a gadget that is not the most “fresh”, but still present in the line of smartphones - Asus Zenfone 5 16Gb. The model that we will be discussing will be subject to deep technical analysis and, to some extent, criticism. As a result, we hope to find out what positive and negative qualities the device is endowed with, what are its strengths and weaknesses, and what, in fact, should be expected by the buyer who purchases this smartphone. At the end of the review, we hope you will have your own impression of what you read about the device.

general characteristics

Let's start the presentation of the smartphone with its general description. The device was introduced at the end of 2014, and after it a whole line of Zenfone devices was presented. Nevertheless, in terms of its technical characteristics, it remains quite relevant (for the budget class) and meets the requirements of the market as a whole. At a price of $200 (during the debut, it probably reached $250-300), the device is equipped appropriately even for a demanding customer (at the time of release, that's for sure). And the technical parameters presented by the developer, taking into account the cost, are an understandable reason for such a stormy interest in the phone from the public. A large number of reviews and recommendations are the clearest confirmation of this.

The model has 2 GB of RAM, an average camera, a Snapdragon 400 processor and a good screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels.

However, let's not get ahead of ourselves and give readers the false impression that the model works with outdated systems. No, in fact, the device functions smoothly and dynamically, due to the high level of optimization of the entire system, consisting of software and hardware components.

However, in order to present the model to you in a more complete light, we have prepared this review, to which we proceed directly.

Equipment

The phone comes in a familiar, classic box made of thick dark cardboard. On the top cover, as usual, there is an image of a smartphone, as well as inscriptions with its name and company name.

Inside the box, we find the device itself, a charger (represented by a cord for connecting to a PC and an adapter with a “plug”), as well as a standard headset. According to reviews dedicated to ASUS Zenfone 5 16Gb, the sound quality of the latter is quite good, considering that this is a factory accessory. By definition, they must be different from what the buyer can buy "on the side."

In addition to the above, in the smartphone kit described by us, you can find instructions.

Design

The appearance of the device is made in the classic Asus style - this design will be demonstrated a little later on Asus Zenfone 2 - a line consisting of three devices.

The front part of ASUS Zenfone 5 16Gb A501CG is visually “composed” of two segments - a screen covered with glass and a pseudo-metal plate that casts in the light. Between them are physical buttons - navigational elements available on every Android device. At the top of the device you can see the speaker slot, as well as the developer's logo.

The side faces of the device are covered with a back cover, which covers them with a single “casing”, along with the back side. Surprisingly, there are no difficulties in removing it - it lends itself easily and without difficulty. On the right side of the smartphone, you can see the metal screen lock buttons, as well as the volume control. The top edge has become a place for the audio jack, and the bottom - for the charging port.

On the back of the phone you can see the camera eye, under which you can find the flash and again the brand name.

Zenfone 5 16Gb is made of plastic due to its budget. True, the device should not be underestimated because of this: its matte texture is very pleasant to the touch, which makes it easier to work with the device - it does not slip at all during a conversation.

Connectors for access to SIM cards and a memory card slot are located under the back cover. You can also see the non-removable battery of the device.

Screen

The display of the device has a diagonal of 5 inches - this is a normal size for a smartphone of this class. According to reviews related to ASUS Zenfone 5 (2) 16Gb, such a screen makes the phone quite convenient for working with basic functions and at the same time is not too cumbersome in terms of mobility.

The quality of the picture shown on the display can also be called high. A resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels contributes to a screen density of around 290 dpi. In practice, this is expressed in the fact that if you want to see the effect of “graininess”, you can, but for this you will need to really carefully concentrate your vision on one point.

With other indicators, the ASUS Zenfone 5 16Gb screen is doing well - there are decent viewing angles (thanks to which the image does not lose its color and saturation as a result of turning the device), capacitive multi-touch (capable of reading up to 10 simultaneous clicks).

You can also praise the display, taking into account the characteristics of the glass that covers it. According to the technical data, it is made of a material that can withstand impacts and scratches. In addition, there is a quality thanks to which the user's fingerprints do not remain on the screen.

CPU

The smartphone operates on the basis of a processor consisting of two cores. The clock speed of each is up to 1.6 GHz, which is enough to work with most applications presented in the Google Play catalog.

In parallel, the developers endowed the device with two options for RAM - 1 and 2 GB. Due to this, it can be argued that the second version of ASUS Zenfone 5 16Gb will be able to demonstrate greater performance. And, of course, this will have a positive effect on the daily tasks facing the phone.

Memory

The lack of space on the smartphone, its users, most likely, will not notice. The developers equipped the model with 16 GB of internal space and, in addition, connected a memory card module, with which you can further expand the space for loading personal data. Thus, the ASUS Zenfone 5 16Gb A501CG smartphone can be bought by those who like to work with a large amount of content without having to take care of the space on the device.

Battery

Another key factor that shows the level of comfort when interacting with the phone is the ability of the smartphone to work on a single charge. This is the autonomy of the model, its “endurance”.

In the case of ASUS Zenfone 5 16Gb A501CG, you should not worry about how long the device will work. The latter is equipped with a battery with a capacity of 2110 mAh. This means that during “normal” use of the device (which includes daily tasks), the battery will last for one day. If desired, you can use the economical mode of operation, which is expressed in turning off the data exchange mode when it is not needed. This will make it possible to “stretch” the work with the device for a couple of days. Also, an alternative solution may be to purchase a portable battery (Power bank).

It is best to ask the buyers themselves about how the battery behaves in practice - those who were directly involved in the “tests” of the smartphone. We will give their opinion at the end of the article, and also offer a simple but effective way to save battery.

Connection

Smartphone ASUS Zenfone 5 (2) 16Gb A501CG (Black) is able to support two SIM-cards. In this, in fact, it is no different from most modern Android devices. After installing them, the system asks the user to choose which of the cards is a priority. After that, you can change this setting using the corresponding menu item.

Our test and review of ASUS Zenfone 5 16 Gb showed that the volume of the earpiece, communication stability and the ability to “catch a signal” are presented at a height, due to which we can only praise the communication features of the model. We could not find any reviews about the device “losing connection”, as is often the case with some Chinese devices.

Operating system

The ASUS Zenfone 5 LTE 16Gb described by us is based on Android OS version 4.3 (it was the current modification at the time the smartphone was released). Today, apparently, version 6.0 is available, to which you can upgrade using a Wi-Fi connection.

The graphical shell here is developed individually for this model - this is ZenUI, which in the future will also be present on the second generation line mentioned above. It included, for example, ASUS Zenfone 2 Lazer 16Gb. At the same time, the 5th version is its “predecessor” in the lineup.

The new interface looks, in our opinion, more attractive than the standard "shell" from Android. The functions that are offered to the smartphone user are presented here in a more convenient form. In addition, of course, new icons, graphic backgrounds and transitions between different phone menus have been developed, which also gives some visual “freshness” to those who are used to working with “naked” Android.

Camera

The device is equipped with two modules for shooting, located on the front and back of the device. The main camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels, while the front camera is equipped with a 2 megapixel matrix. As noted by the reviews describing ASUS Zenfone 5 16Gb A501CG Black, the quality of pictures can compete with photos taken with more expensive smartphone models. This is partly the result of a quality hardware component. On the other hand, the developers achieved this effect due to an optimized software base. Still, as noted earlier, the device is equipped with a flash.

The screen diagonal is 5 inches, the matrix type is S-IPS (a kind of IPS matrices), the resolution is 1280 × 720 pixels, the display is covered with Corning Fit protective glass (similar to Gorilla Glass), there is an oleophobic coating.

First of all, we note that the presence of an oleophobic coating in such a budget smartphone is a big plus. You will not have any problems using gestures (on devices without an oleophobic coating, the finger is constantly stuck and using the same Swype is very inconvenient) and cleaning the screen from dirt.

The screen itself boasts support for working with gloves and two special modes for fine-tuning the color gamut. In the display settings, you can make the colors warmer or colder, as well as turn on the “reading mode”, which softens the white color, making it easier to read from a smartphone. As for working with gloves, we tested this function: responsiveness with gloves is not so high, but it is quite enough to take a call or scroll through the list of new messages.

HD-resolution and S-IPS-matrix have a positive effect on picture quality, the image is smooth and clear, color reproduction is close to natural. The same viewing angles typical for a budget smartphone could be better. In the sun, the display almost completely fades, it also has problems when reading in the dark, I want to make the minimum brightness even less. This indicates a small range of brightness.

In general, for a five-inch device for 7000 rubles, the display used here is very good.

Camera

At the presentation of the Zenfone line in Russia, we were told a lot of good things about the shooting technologies used and the quality of the camera, so it was more interesting to test them on our own.

The smartphone is equipped with two cameras: the main one with 8 MP and the front one with 1.3 MP. The main camera takes good pictures in sunny weather. When the lighting deteriorates, grain appears in the photo. The device has a separate night mode that reduces the resolution of the final image, but increases its brightness. We tested it and we can note that the picture does look brighter, but the final quality is still poor.

The smartphone can shoot with the bokeh effect, when the entire background except for the subject is blurred. For a budget device, the pictures are quite decent.

Video is recorded in the maximum resolution of Full HD at 30 frames per second.

Working with text - 5.0

The smartphone has a proprietary keyboard preinstalled, it is convenient for simple typing. The keys are large, erroneous presses are minimal, there is a separate row for quickly entering numbers. The keyboard supports gesture input (Swype), as well as a set of additional characters by holding the key.

Compared to previous versions of the keyboard, the updated one has become more convenient.

Internet - 4.0

The Asus Zenfone 5 uses the standard Android browser with a few tweaks from the manufacturer, and is perfect for browsing any web page. The browser has automatic scaling when text is enlarged and a built-in translator. A separate reading mode is also present.

According to our tests, this is one of the most convenient built-in browsers, it is perfect for both undemanding and advanced users.

Interfaces

The smartphone has the following interfaces: Wi-Fi (b / g / n) (support for dual-band Wi-Fi is not available), Bluetooth, GPS, but there is no support for NFC and LTE. The entire line of Zenfone can work with SIM-cards at the same time. However, it is worth noting that the device has only one radio module, so when talking from one SIM card, the second one becomes unavailable.

Also, in our tests, the device could not re-find the network signal if at some point it was lost (for example, in an elevator or subway), we had to restart it or turn on / off the “on the plane” mode.

Multimedia - 3.0

We tried to play various video files on Asus Zenfone 5: the smartphone supports only common formats and codecs, the player plays videos in high quality, up to 1080p. Among the support for rare formats, we will single out only MKV, but the built-in audio player could not play AVI. The choice of subtitles and audio tracks is also missing. The audio player in the smartphone plays only popular MP3, AAC, WAV formats.

Battery - 2.5

The smartphone has a non-removable lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 2110 mAh. These are standard numbers for many modern smartphones. The results of our tests are as follows: when watching HD-video at maximum brightness, the device is discharged in 5 hours, when listening to music - in 32 hours.

Performance - 1.8

The Asus Zenfone A501CG uses an Intel Atom Z2560 platform with a 1.6 GHz dual-core processor, a PowerVR SGX544 MP graphics subsystem, and 2 GB of RAM.

We tested the performance of the smartphone in a few simple tests. Firstly, we checked how much desktops and pages are scrolled in the browser - there are no complaints about this parameter for the smartphone. We also tested it with modern games and we can note that most of them are perfectly supported by Zenfone 5, slowdowns can be observed only in the most productive ones (Asphalt 8, Modern Combat 5).

Memory - 4.0

The amount of built-in memory in the phone Asus Zenfone 5 can be equal to 8 GB or 16 GB, of the 16 GB version, 12 GB is available to the user. The smartphone has a slot for memory cards up to 64 GB, hot swap is supported.

Peculiarities

The device runs under the control of the ZenUI shell, a new interface from Asus with a lot of settings. The manufacturer improved the dialer (Russian letters appeared in it), added its own keyboard, installed several additional functions in its own browser, and in general did a great job of adapting the shell to the needs of the user. In our opinion, ZenUI can compete on equal terms with the more famous Samsung TouchWiz and HTC Sense.

Competitors

For the spring of 2015, the price of the Asus Zenfone 5 (A501CG) smartphone is approx. 12000 rubles. For this money, you get a smartphone with a high-quality screen, good performance, high-quality body materials and a good camera.

The closest competitor in terms of characteristics is Huawei Honor 3C, it has a better display and dimensions, but the model also costs 2,000 rubles more.

We believe that for the money, Asus Zenfone 5 is an excellent proposition for users looking for an inexpensive but high-quality smartphone from a well-known brand.
